:bluesad: Hi everyone, just left my cat Skittles with the vet, she will have surgery tomorrow, she swallowed a sewing needle that I had left in my pin cushion with a bit of thread in the end. The vet isn't sure if she will make it, as the thread may be lodged in her intestines. Skittles was never one to chew on anything before, & I wouldn't want this to happen to anyone elses pets. I have 3 cats, Skitty is 5, she's gorgeous, all white with 1 green eye & 1 blue. Anyway, just wanted to let you know my experience & I'll certainly be much more careful in the future. Elly

Elly, I am so sorry about Skittles. :bluesad:

I have 4 kitties myself and I want you to know that your post MADE me finally do something to prevent the same thing from happening.

Your comment that "she never seemed interested" did it. That's what I kept thinking.

I went outside and got a small, heavy flower pot big enough to cover my pins, pin cushion and pin magnet. When I'm done sewing for the day it's easy to pile them up and pop the pot over them. If it wasn't easy I wouldn't do it.

I'm so glad you posted and please know that it made a big impression on me.

Please let us know how your baby is. I'm anxious to hear.

Oh, dear!
I do hope your cat makes it through this. I, too have had both a kitty and a dog mishap. The cat got tangled in some tread and in his panic, did get a couple of needles stuck in him. Fortunately, the vet disentangeled the cat and removed the needles with no lasting harm except to my wallet.
After that incident, I made sure to put sharp things well out of the reach of animals. So, I don't know how the dog (golden retriever) got a hold of the pin cushion. But, she did and ate the whole thing! Well, needless to say, to the vet we went to have xrays and surgery. The pins showed up bright and clear inside the dog and had to be removed.
Never underestimate the ability of the furry ones' ability to get into things and trouble.
Now things are LOCKED away from the animals.
Good luck for your Skittle, I certainly pray that she'll have a quick recovery.

Elly, I hope Skittles will be ok. We always think of small children around the needles and such but often forget our 4 legged "children". Keep us posted and thanks for a warning we all often forget about.

Reminds me to be more careful about closing the door to the sewing room.

Elly,
I have 4 dogs and their room is my sewing room. I choose that room to sew in because it has a vinyl floor which is also why it is the dogs room. Now I am rethinking the wisdom of shareing the room with them.
Thank you for the heads up. Hope your cat makes it.

That is terrible, Elly. I do hope Skittles will be OK! This scares me with my cat as well, as since we live in a small two-room flat it is really challenging to put needles, pins and thread out of her reach.

I do hope Skittles will be fine, Elly.

Elly, so sorry to hear about Skittles, and hope all turns out well. This is one reason my sewing room is totally off limits to the furbabies (two dogs, one cat). Since I do a lot of bridal and pageant wear, the shed hair is also unnacceptable. It is also the only no smoking room in the house (Rob and I both, unfortunately do) NO EXCEPTIONS.
Keep us up to date on Skittles' progress!

I hope your kitty will be OK. The door to my sewing room is always shut, so no danger there, but my DD sews in her room sometimes, and she's not as careful with pins and needles and such. I'll have to have her sew in my room when she wants to.

I'm sorry about your kitty, but thanks for the warning.

I'm sorry about your kitty. I learned the hard way years ago. My kitty got a needle and thread out of my pin cushion too and swallowed it. Somehow it got stuck in the back of his tongue with the thread going down his throat. Luckily the vet was able to put him under and remove it. I was very careful to keep it well out of their reach after that. Who knew needles were sooo tempting? Keep us posted on kitty's progress.

No saying was ever more true than "curiosity killed the cat." Hope she is OK.

I swear my cats are jealous of my sewing machine. I sit and "pet" it for hours and it "purrs." The cats find that little needle going up and down, up and down, very enticing too and they try to swat at it. After some close calls I smartened up and banned all cats from my sewing area when I'm using it, though one does live in the laundry/sewing room.

Elly, hope Skittles is doing well. I have 3 cats and one of mine will eat anything stringy at all. He loves to eat people hair particularly (even while it is still attached) but will settle for wool or ribbon or cotton or anything similar. We have had a few mishaps with items eaten when I was distracted but luckily never anything harmful. Let us all know how he is doing. Best wishes.

Hi everyone, thanks for your good wishes. Skittles is now home, she had quite a time, but should recover. Keeping my fingers crossed. It was touch & go for a while. But she is eating a little now, & she's moving around pretty good. She'll have to go back in a week to have the stitches out. She says a big "thank you" to you all. Elly

I'm glad to hear she's okay. It's funny how cats like sewing rooms. One of mine loves to lay on top of fabric.
One of my cats got a pincushion once and gently pulled out each one by the head. They were large glass ball pins. I caught her while she was doing it. Pins were all over the couch.
Another time I caught our dog chewing on thread that had a needle threaded on it. I'm soooooo glad I caught her before she swallowed it.
I swear it's like having toddlers in the house. :bluewink: Except that cats can reach places that kids can't. I try to remember to keep dangerous things like needles out of their reach.

Wow, thanks for the post. I never thought about my cat getting into my sewing things. I generally keep everything in a closet, but she can get into that. Thanks again, I'll be sure to keep my things under lock and key now!
