I don't know what it is all about but it is on my calendar. Is this like Independance Day?

Thanks Gina - yes it is sort of but unfortunately most Aussies are fairly apathetic in their patriotism (we never actually fought for our independence or anything) so it is not a big thing here in comparison to your 4 July. It is actually a celebration of the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet (convict transportees kicked out by England) in Sydney.

There have certainly been attempts to make more of a thing out of it lately but its pretty slow going - I suspect most Aussies sort of think "Oh cool - another public holiday" and thats about the extent of their feeling. The other issue is that a number of folk (particularly some Aboriginals) feel it is inappropriate to celebrate an occasion that resulted in the dispossession (amongst other usually worse things) that happened to the Aboriginals already living here.

Enough politics - I'm one of the relatively apathetic lot - I don't go out and wave my flag but at least I have a sense of guilt about it.

I think if we had a day that we'd had to fight (especially as underdogs) the authorities for and managed to win we might feel differently.

But hey, thanks again. Had a great day not waving my flag - went to beach (sun finally came out), ate Mexican food (oops) and went to a twilight beach market.

 You have the full Australian attitude there Pauline, and at least you managed to go to the beach.

We took the kids and Grandparents to see Happy Feet, and then packed them all up so hubby and I can have US time. Which isn't as exciting as it seems.... we have to find a new house to rent, as our big Australia Day present was being told that our house is going on the market. And we did Chinese for tea - but that's all part of being multi-cultural isn't it??? Oh, ans we thought about putting our flag up that I got hubby for Christmas, but decided to wait until we move.
Cheers, Soph.

I'm happiest when I am sewing!

Presumably Colombus Day is a celebration of the anniversary of the discovery of etc. So does that mean you have to eat Spanish food. :bg:

It's more of an Italian thing. New York has it's parade and it's much bigger out there. Here on the west coast it's hardly mentioned. Patty is a much better source of info.

Columbus was Italian but went to Queen Isabella of Spain to finance his trip.

So, you're right, Pauline, w/out her there would have been no discovery so we should eat Spanish food.

Bring on the tapas and paella.......... :bg:

Oops - just goes to show how much emphasis is placed on US history here. I knew Isabella coughed up the finances but I thought Colombus was from Spain too. Oh well - I'd rather eat Spanish than Italian food anyday - I'm not a huge pasta fan.

I'll have to get out my map of the US again just to check the geography - I downloaded a map and also a list of state abbreviations just so I could visualise where you all were.
