I'm in the middle of trying to configure my computer to read my taped VHS tapes and copy them on to my DVD-writer. I kind of think I'm on the right track, but my computer guy has never done it, he just got the info from another customer who has the same setup, so I know it works. I just don't understand why the cords they give you to hook up to the TV and/or VCR are so blinkin short! (like inches). I don't want to have to move the computer over to the TV or visa versa and the VCR would need its own table to sit high enough for the cords to reach it from the back of the computer. It's really bizarre!

My sister and I were just talking about this today. We want to make DVDs of all the videos we have of our kids but have no idea where to start. :nc:

I was told when I bought my computer that I need a box to make it happen on my computer. There is a box and software you buy for around 70.00 at Office Depot that can hook up to your computer and then to the vcr to transfer them to your DVD's. It sounded easy enough when the guy told me about it but I never tried to get it yet. But I have about 100 of the little VHC's I want to copy of the grandkids and some of the VHS's of the family also. I keep thinking if they weed out the VCR's and go to the DVD's what's next after that? I remember when I was little we had the 8MM camera with a projector you had to shine on a screen or on the white wall to see your movies. And they weren't talkie's back then. Oh they were funny. I have some of those I saved from the flood too. I just don't have a projector to play them on.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

Well, after spending all day trying to fix my computer because it decided to do the continuous loop thing, rebooting over and over and over, I'm not even sure if I want to attempt to copy the tapes!! But Pauline if I do get to the point where I'm going to attempt it and have questions I'll definitely PM you. Why are computers so finicky sometimes?? I had to completely reinstall WinXp and thank God I didn't loose anything. Tomorrow I'll back up everything, wipe out the hard drive and start from scratch. All I wanted was a computer for my sewing room and all I've done all week is fight with it. Argh!

Laura, I have just spent 2 days trying to fix the same thing!!! A miasma must have blown in with the wind from the east.

FYI: My loop started when I tried to set up the CD that came with my new Kodak Easy Share digital camera. Anybody else have problems with this beast?

In my old computer the Kodak Easy Share disk tried to turn everything into it's own files. Drove me crazy. In this one it went after the sound files -- the ones I need for radio work.
I finally got a memory card in the camera and just plug it in to the computer skipping the Kodak stuff and uninstalled the Kodak program. It works much better for me.

MIL~
I still have all of our 8mm films we had as a kid! :) The projector and everything too! But...I livei n MN!!! I would gladly share if you ever wanted to come visit! I have a friend who lives in Metarie. How close are y ou to that? I know that is RIGHT next to New Orleans...just wondering how much youlost in the flood too. My friend came to stay with us for a few days and when he went back he and his pup still had his house! Still had some major repairs but not anything like I have seen on the TV. SO....I am also thinking of moving my VCR tapes (special ones) to DVD's and my brother said it is a rather simple thing to do. Will have to ask him details and get back to you!

Well, I don't feel so stupid now. I have the HP Photosmart 2570 all in one series. Installed the software, didn't work right. Made a service call, no help at all. E-mailed them ,had a nice conversation back & forth, did as was told, didn't help at all. reinstalled the software once again but haven't tried it for one reason. If it doesn't work this time I just might take a hammer to the thing & count my losses. It is sooo simple to use, IF it only worked. :nc:

Dorothy, Thank you, thank you. I will go that route. I seem to have a lot of photo editing programs. Everything comes with one thing or another and I never know until they are installed. Producers are cagey and have detailed information on the disks!! The Kodak program did just as you said (I have a 6 year old computer) and then I couldn't remove it!! Off now, however.

I am relatively computer literate but they are frustrating. At one point in my life I could tell almost to the minute how long any task at work or home would take. That skill totally disappeared when I got my first computer and then started working on a huge main frame. And I never got the skill back. :bluesad:

Bridesmom, I had a lot of slides that I had commercially transferred onto VHS. Some were very old. I then had copies made for all family members. I should probably have them put onto disk but not right now. I recall the gentleman who moved mine did not charge all that much as it was a company he operated out of his home. As it was a new business he got a lot of referrals from me. He even transfered my viewmaster 'things' that my grandfather used to take.

Later this day, I received a newletter with this address in it for conversions. Bridesmom, I have not checked it out but sounds like what you are looking for.
