I am going to the Winter Homecoming next friday and i am making my dress. I figured a black lace up corset with a red velvet skirt and a black petticoat. Now I have searched for a pattern of a corset, and i can't find one. ( I relize this outfit is a little weird). I know how to make the skirt and I had recently made a petticoat for last Homecoming. So can anyone help me? Or should I look to buy one because I only have a week..?
Thanks so much!

Oh my goodness, she starts us off with a corset! OK, I can't offer you any tips b/c I haven't gotten there--yet. There are corset patterns out there, but still, you'd have to practically re-draw it from scratch to make it fit your own body. Here's one from simplicity (http://simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=4145). I do know of a place where you can find a tutorial for one. Ah, but it's underbust, so it might not be quite what you're after This girl makes it look so easy, but I have to wonder. hmm...Now, if I give you the link to another forum for the tute., will you promise not to give up on SWN? 2 different kinds of forums, 2 different kinds of input, and both valuable for good reasons. Check your private msgs for a link.

Know what? I just saw a gazillion of them in Simplicity, in different styles. That means the other companies will have them too. Look under Special Occasion Dresses, and you'll find a number of outfits that are a separate skirt and corset. Have another look.

Look under historical patterns...specifically Civil War Era. Find a pattern that gives the best information in boning application.

Good luck.

Hi Ozll, I made a corset 2 years ago and saved all my links. Since yours is for a party, I would advise against using a historical pattern - you wouldn't feel at east, especially since you won't have much time to try out and "break" the corset before you went to the party.
Contemporary patterns are much more advisable in this case (and they'll be much easier, too!)
Some good ones:
Simplicty 5006 (http://simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=5006) (this one has very good reviews on the Internet)
McCall's 3853 (http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M3853.htm?tab=dresses&page=1) (this one has interesting variations, I have it in my stash). Since the pictures on the McCall's website aren't that clear, do ask if you want me to scan my pattern envelope.

Have fun! Making a corset is not as difficult as it seems, but you DO have to make a mock-up, with boning, before making the real one. If the mock-up works, it can always be used as a lining, so no time lost :bluesmile

those patterns are really helpfull! However since I don't have the time to make one right now, I am going to buy one and make the skirt real quick. I will try when I have more time.

I hope you'll try it out :bluesmile It really isn't as tricky as it looks! :bluesmile
Hope you'll show us a picture you in your skirt and in the corset (even if it's purchased, it's always inspiring! and you'll be sewing the skirt :bluesmile )

Ozll! Don't disappoint us! Someone you know has got to have a digital camera! (and by the way Walmart has very inexpensive ones too nowadays, hanging up on pegs near the memory cards).
This is what you do, when you are at your party, have your friend take your picture and have her send it to you via email. That will get it on your computer in one step to post it for us! Problem solved! Next!

I made the exact same mistake not too long ago! My husband still laughs at me for it. :re: At least it's too big rather than too small!

I have found that if you are looking for anything that is a bit different and not in most of the sewing books, then try Kwik Sew, especially in the lingerie section.

I realize we are now past your wear date, and I hope all went well. If you are ever in need in the future, www.farthingales.com is the site for all things corset. They have patterns, supplies, and even kits with everything included.
So, how did everything turn out?
