My 8 yo is a flower girl in my SILs wedding. Her dress has a satin bodice with spaghetti straps and a satin skirt with a tulle overskirt. I'm racking my brains to think of a fabric to make either a shrug or little cape to keep her warmer in case the day is cold. I don't particularly want to use satin because I doubt I'd get a good match to the bodice (it's a difficult shade of ivory) and also a pain to sew with. My SIL has said she didn't think that fur would "look right" with the dress.

What does that leave - velvet? Not too sure. Anybody got other ideas. She does feel the cold a fair bit so a tulle or organza wrap or bolero is probably not going to do the job.

I like the velvet idea. I would want somthing warmer for the linning though. Is this wedding going to be outside? Will she wear this through the whole wedding?

It's not an outside wedding but there will be about 2 hours or so outside (late afternoon/early evening) for photos. The weather could be really hot or really cold - there's no way of knowing so this is a just in case type thing. It will be early autumn so the chances are it will be in the low to mid 60 F (16-18 C) at the time they will be outside. Even though it probably doesn't seem cold because she won't have acclimatised properly and feels the cold a lot she will need something outside.

My SIL doesn't really want her to have anything over her dress (it's all about looks for her), I want her to be comfortable. So she probably won't wear it in the church and while she is in the formal photos and entering the reception but if needed will wear it the rest of the time.

Are there any other colors in the wedding so the wrap would coordinate that way? Then you wouldn't have to match it to her dress.

Pauline I solved this same problem a few mos ago for my daughter. Use whatever fabric looks the best, and line it. I used a moire (looks a lot like wood grain) that coordinated with her outfit, lined it with satin, and included an interlining of flannel for warmth. The bride liked it so much I made one for her as well. I made a rectangle the length of the distance from fingertip to opposite shoulder. Fastened with a single button, and I made a little tuck in the back so she wouldn't look like dracula. Lots of oohs and ahhs. Let me know if you need pics for this.

flower girl with insulated wrap (http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=10nskech.4eeivztp&x=1&y=-o0v91g) You might have to sign in to see these. This bride's flowers were green orchids and she used brown in her invitations and other accessories. There are even some pics from after the ceremony of the bride wearing her matching brown wrap. Contrast worked for this one in particular, but you could certainly use a matching color instead of a contrast.

When I was a child I had a velvet cape with a collar (they were in style then). I really loved it. I'm sure that if you fashion a cape the child will be very happy to wear it!

Pauline, what size is she?? I have a lovely Pumpkin Patch jacket that is ivory that my daughter wore over her christening dress. I am not sure what the material is, but it looks like a cross between a felted wool and a fleecy. I am pretty sure that it is a line that they have most of the time. They also seem to have a lot of dressy items that you maybe able to get one from them instead of making it.
Cheers, Soph.

I think white velvet would be beautiful! Very classy! How about a bolero jacket.. I know if you made this out of white velvet and showed it to your SIL that she would be very happy with it... I just can't believe that she doesn't want the child to wear anything.. I'd rather have a happy child than a cold miserable child in my wedding..

Does she have a wedding colour (other then ivory) or what colour are the bridesmaids dresses. Could you do a bolero or something in one of those colours.

Maybe a little velvet cape with a matching muff? I love little girl outfits with muffs and once the pix are done the bride is done too on what your daughter wears, otherwise YOU are going to have a tearful little girl on your hands:bluewink:
I like the idea of interlining with flannel it will make a huge difference for warmth! My wedding day happened to be freezing so we all wrapped up in coats and threw them off for the pictures. They looked fine and no tears.

I'm definitely sold on the idea of interlining (thanks Andrea) but I haven't decided yet whether to do a cape (easier) or bolero (looks better). I guess I'd like to do the bolero but am uncertain how bulky it would end up with a couple of layers of fabric. The deciding factor may well be the sale (yay) that my local Spotlight is having starting tomorrow on bridal fabrics. I'll go down and have a look to see what looks nice and might let the fabric choices dictate which way I'll go.

If I can find a nice heavy delustered satin at a reasonable price (unlikely) I might go bolero or else go for the cape. I've got a couple of patterns already for capes that I'd like to try - including one that would look terrific in a lighter fabric  .

Other thing I was considering is the trim that looks sort of like a thin feather boa - I'm not sure what it's called. I'm assuming it would be handsewn on but what will the result be like - I'd hate to see the stitching or wrinkles or puckers in the feathering.

I don't know if someone has mentioned it * because I don't know what a Bol...whatever you said is* But how about a shrug? Its really popular nowadays and I am sure you could find a pattern..

( they are those little..1/2 jacket things alot of teens wore to my last homecoming, I wore a hoodie)
The one in the link does not look too formal, but I am sure you could make one out of a more formal fabric. And dispite what your SIL says i think a fur-shrug would look absolutly adorable!

I don't know if it's the official line but when I think of a bolero I think of something with more structure and stiffness of fabric and a shrug as something a bit softer with more drape. I originally considered the shrug but my fabric choices point more to bolero or cape.

I love the little fur bolero from your link - really cute - but I've been told no by she who must be obeyed. Oh well. If I decide to do the bolero I'll probably draft a pattern off an existing jacket and just change it to the length and shape at the front that I want.

How are you going with your outfit for Friday?

ARe you irritated yet? Brides are just a mess!!! I hate em. Fact is that once the ceremony is over, the little girl is not her concern except for the photos. As the mother, I'd do what I want and I wouldn't worry about it. The bride will barely know that she is there for the rest of the proceedings...and no one will really care what she is wearing...unless she is a doll and gets lots of special attention. I'd dress her as the bride wants for the ceremony and pics...then I'd do as I want for everything else...just put her little jacket, cape, whatever where it can be put on after the ceremony. Some brides don't even keep the flower girl in front of the church during the ceremony.

How are you going with your outfit for Friday?

I am not doing so well.. I have not had any time to work on it.. I did just run out and buy a black corset as it was clear I will not have the time to make one ( i plan to try and make one when i have more time) So, i am just going to make the red velvet skirt part, as I have made this type of skirt- 300 houndred times before. However, I don't have anytime, I'll probably be sticking up the skirt 30 mins before the Dance.. But thanks for the concern!

Pam - I am a bit over it at the moment. And I'm not alone - this is the most overchoreographed wedding I've ever known. In addition to those in the bridal party she has also meddled (or tried to) in the attire of her mother and father, her future MIL and FIL, my husband (her brother), her BIL and I. All other family members are in some way involved in the bridal party which is dressed within an inch of their lives.

However I've had the last laugh - as instructed I bought a floor length formal gown to wear. It is beautiful, well made, nice label, looks great etc. etc. What she does not (and my husband tells me cannot) know is that I bought it at a thrift shop for $7.50. You couldn't tell it wasn't brand new as it is in perfect condition but she would freak out and take it as an insult if she knew that I hadn't spent a fortune on it. What she really wanted (and got with all the other women) was to come shopping with me to "help me chose something nice". The men and boys just had to go out and hire tuxes.

Since I almost certainly will never wear it again (and even if I did I really like it), I'm much happier with what I got.

I'm sure all will be well on the day - whatever I put Caitlin in. Anyway she's getting so caught up in other details now (it's getting closer) that we're almost flying under the radar now.

I'm glad she is busy elsewhere. Although she'll never know where your gown came from, I'm sure you'll be smiling all the way through the ceremony! Congratulations on your wonderful find!!!!!

I've admitted defeat and gone out and purchased a bolero for my dd. I trotted down to Spotlight a couple of days ago and the only fabric I liked (colour match and weight etc.) was on special and was still $20 a metre. I would probably only need a metre but I would also need to purchase a walking foot (which I'll probably do soon anyway) and deal with the pressure of living up to my SILs expectations. So I walked away to see if I could find something RTW before I made my decision.

I popped into a childrens wear shop this morning just to see if they had anything suitable. I'd already looked in a couple of bridal shops but all they had were short sleeved organza boleros which looked lovely but provided no warmth at all. I was pleased to find a very nice little satin bolero in just the right colour. It was $45 which is a fair bit more than if I'd made it but still worthwhile because if SIL doesn't like it - it won't be my fault.

Next problem now please ....:bang:

This wedding is giving me more trouble than my own did.
