I am interested to know how many think a pocket on a shirt is "necessary" in order for it to be a completed shirt. I am wrestling with the idea of not putting a pcket o my shirts.

You had me for a minute. I had to go look at an online catalog b/c I couldn't think of whether or not I'd seen them without pockets before. I saw lots of MENS shirts without pockets at a major retailer online. Why not? Pockets are for putting things in. If you prefer to carry things in your pants pockets then fine.

If it is a man's shirt I put pockets on ...if it is for a lady, I think the pockets are strictly optional.

This discussion brings up an idea I have had for some time. I am not a big breasted person, and am getting a bit droopy, yet breast pocket on shirts (like camp shirts) seem to stand straight out from my chest. I usually remove the pockets before I ever wear a ready to wear and definitely do not put on anything I make, fashion or no fashion. Does anyone else feel this way?

I say no for women's shirts but definitely yes for men's shirts. Also, if there's a pattern in the fabric match the pocket. It's a quality feature and people do notice. Cheap shirts don't match the pockets and the buttonholes are vertical instead of horizontal. Just MHO, Lennie P.S. Cabo is cool......... |

I had never thought about it but when I saw the post had to do the same as Andrea and go and check some out. I wouldn't bother about the ladies shirt but the mens shirt probably depends somewhat on the fabric and cut etc. There are definitely some shirts that would look odd without them. Just curious now - why don't you want to? And also - if you really don't want to - why would you? Other peoples opinions? Whose shirt is it anyway. Let them make their own. Pauline

Lennie, Cheap shirts don't match the pockets and the buttonholes are vertical instead of horizontal. I prefer vertical button holes on shirts because they don't pull as much. Horizontal seem best on jackets which I usually have open anyway. Dorothy |

Cabo is cool......... Thanks Lennie, but I have seen $65-$95 shirts where the pocket didn't match. Don't get me wrong, I always try to match up the pocket, but rarely do I ever succeed with a perfect match. As for the button holes, I have done a lot of reseach and truly authentic Aloha shirts have button holes that are horizontal not vertical. Cabo Loco- "Paradise is closer than you think."

It's more a matter of curiousity. I was at the Don CeSar Hotel in St. Pete with my cousin and fiancee and noticed that many of the T.B. shirts did not have pockets. I was thinking that since the shirts that I will be making are going to be custom made, I will ask the person if he wants a pocket or not. Personally, I am thinking that all of the rayon shirts I do, especially border prints will not have a pocket, but the cotton shirts will. Cabo Loco- "Paradise is closer than you think."

If you sew - make what you want YOUR way. BTW - I thought vertical buttonholes prevented "gaposis". Every man's dress shirt my H has has vetical buttonholes. I make all mine vertical. Weezy |

In a fitted garment, verticle button holes will come undone. I never use them in a dress that buttons all the way down the front. I think they are much prettier though.

This is the sort of thing that is very useful to know and explains why I never wear a couple of dresses in my cupboard. I just thought they were too tight. LOL Pauline

My husband can't stand shirts without pockets, so when a daughter gave him 2 beautiful shirts without pockets I did the following: Using another pocket as a pattern, I cut a pocket out of each shirt tail, sewed in a patch of similar material, then constructed and sewed on the created pockets. |

My hubby much prefers pockets. In fact, if a shirt doesn't have pockets, he won't wear it. He has a small pad of paper and his pen at all times. This comes from working in construction for 45 yrs. I guess.

Reading Shirtmaking by David Page Coffin He says a true man's dress shirt does NOT have pockets as the suit will have enough for anything he needs to carry, he does put pockets on more casual shirts. FYI Jeanette
