I need help choosing which machine to keep and which to give to my sister in law.
My main machine in a viking 1+ but I also have a singer 534 and a pfaff 1199.My sister in laws machine broke down and is not worth fixing and she quilts alot so I am going to give her one of mine,I really dont need 3 but I like them both and am not sure what one to give her.
what one do you think will last the longest,or is the better machine as for quilting?Any help with this would be great Thanks:bluesad:

Can't help you out as I don't know enough about sewing machines but had to stop in and say what a lovely thing you're doing. Well done.

i guess the one you use the least would be the one to give her. they all sound like good machines. i have 7 all together and am finally getting rid of one!! i use the rest regularly and can't imagine not having them all! guess i'm just a greedy ole lady!!!!!

Those are all three good machines. The 534 will probably go first as by now the gears and/or timing belts are giving out on most of them. The 1199 will outlast the 1+ but the 1+ does so much more than the 1199 and both will last many years.

Thanks Tom,
I should have said I am keeping the 1+(I love her but not that much!!) so you think the pfaff would last her the longest with care.It does'nt have the manual so it's a little hard to use do you know where I could find one? Thanks

Yes the Pfaff will last forever if taken care of. She can get a manual from her dealer which will also give her the opportunity to get to know them.

Wow! If you get rid of the Phaff, you and I have the same two machines. My Singer still sings and I've been using it recently with the other being cleaned. Got the Singer from my parents for Xmas in 1977.

I love my HV. Dh wants me to upgrade but I see no need. I've had this one for about 1 1/2 years and I'm still loving it and haven't used it to it's full potential.

Lennie,
That is so funny! You have a very nice husband,I want to upgrade for a bigger stitch field and the usb,but mine says NO!!But I have really liked my 1+ and my pfaff for back up I got that one at a thrift store two years ago for 6.00 can you belive that ,with all the feet to.
My friend gave me the singer a few months ago because she was moving over seas and couldnt take it with her,so I've been enjoying that one to,and it runs great so quite its nice.I think I will give my sister in law the pfaff, she could really use it but I will miss it.Thanks Tom for the advice,Its nice to know I can come here for it.

the phaff is the most durable, long lasting machine of all of them actually. You can contact the manufacturer via the net and request a new manual.
Singer's manufacturered pre 1980 (not sure of exact date) are the best made. They were purchased by Hoover vacums and lost the detailed attention all commodities get as the "only one" there after. Singer had a sketchy period transitioning to the digital computer stage but bounced back there after.
On a personal note, I am not fond of any machine that is primarily plastic, or such a low density plastic that it feels like it weighs nothing.
After years of consumer research and testing on both domestic and industrial levels, my top choice is still "Janome" or "New Home" hands down in all catagories (quality performance, speed, ease of operation, design selection, required upkeep, maintenance/service, user friendly), including sergers and embroiderers. Back to your question, the Phaff is built like a tank, if maintained well, it will last many, many years with minimal required upkeep.
