I don't have computer savvy, I have all these embroidery designs saved on the computer, I put them in folders so it would not take up all the space, my question is, my son is coming over to show me how to burn the designs onto CD's, if it all works fine, once the designs are on the CD, do I delete the designs that I saved in the folders, or what do I do with them.
Thanks in advance.
Joyce.

How much space are you talking about? And compare that to how much available space you have. I think that will tell you whether you should delete them off your hard drive or not. It is a great idea to have them on CD as a back up, but for fastest retrieval the hard drive is number one.

No, put them on CD for back up and leave them on the hard drive. If your computer crashes, you still have your back up CD. If the CD becomes corrupted, you still have your hard drive. You should always have a back up of all designs. I made the mistake of putting all of my designs on a Flash Drive when I first got my embroidery machine. All of my designs were purchased and many were downloaded only. My husband turned my laptop on its side because he couldn't get the mouse plugged in and broke my flash drive...I LOST all my designs!!!! (Just an example of what can happen.)

That's because they're still collecting the pieces.

I made two Cd's of my designs collections. That way if one gets lost or scrathched or corrupted I have the back up. I also put a folder on my desktop to put the free designs in that I get off the computer now and then. Every now and then I save them to a disk so I won't lose them. I like to save my designs on a CDRW that way I can keep adding to the cd. But if you do that make sure you mark the CD some way so it's not erased by mistake.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

I keep mine on my computer in BuzzXplore (catalog), on CD's and on a Maxtor backup...living in FL you don't take chances...(and many flash cards and thumb drives..because all my machines don't use the same things.)

Most of the designs are small. I was working on a ZIP drive for 5 years and hadn't filled it. Since I upgraded to XP, I started using USB drives, and backed up everything on a compact flash card. The cards are fairly durable - I've heard of photographers who have put them through the wash and they still work.

Thank you all for your advice, but how can a CD. become corrupt, is it because maybe a design was corrupt when it was downloaded.
Thanks again.

Well, in the first place they can scratch. I have been watching a few things about CD that say that they can deteriorate. There is a little varmit or something that "eats" the etching on the CD. They say that a CD can actually go bad in a short amount of time if the conditions are right.

Yep..if CD's get too hot or are in the sun too much ....
they go 'dead'..best to keep them cool and dry, but like everything else, they have a 'life' too. (sometimes the real cheap OFF brand CD's aren't good for anything...)

I have about 3 copies of backup. I have always stored stuff elsewhere since I tangled with IE4. You had to turn off the active desktop to fix something (I forget what now) and I did format C:
If I upgrade my computer, I just tell the tech to get the OS and peripherals working. I'll just reinstall everything.
My computers are so customized that no one in the family likes to use them.
