I have a great outfit with a big oversized t shirt and some leggings - my fave legwarmers and my purple suade pixie boots. Must just backcomb my hair for that Jane Fonda look.. Now Susie - you are bring the Gumbo! I am gonna ask Kath to make a cake. You are only 50 once. love and kisses, Jan

Oooh Jan, Happy Birthday. Since we're doing 80's style, I'll wear my black/white polka dot, multi-layer ruffled dress, with matching pumps(do they still make polka-dot pumps??), a styling hat, and I'll use the matching belt from the dress to accessorize my hat. I wore it to a wedding in 1984 in Ireland, so I'm sure to knock more socks off with it again. Nothing like a Yank standing out in a crowd! (Thank goodness I was thin back then, with all those ruffles, don't ya know! ) I thought about knitting someting to wear, but my skills are really, really rusty -- and I'm not sure I would have enough done to cover all of me....maybe just the important parts! For goodies, I'll bring triple-chocolate cookies, and see if I can scrounge up some party favors. What's everyone else going to be wearing or bringing??? Peggy

Well, I'll wear a lilac coloured dress with a flared skirt and a bolero top. There are darker purple flowers all around the skirt and I just love twirling when I dance...it flares out beautifully. Well since it's gonna be a party...I'll be bringing the maple syrup to pour over the ice cream & cake. Can't have ice cream without maple syrup! Oh, almost forgot...Jan...I'll wish you a Happy Birthday tomorrow when I arrive for the party! TTFN from

Jan! I wish you 50 more wonderful years. I want to go to the party! I'll be wearing a big off the shoulder sweater with my leggings and two pairs of slouch socks, a dozen bangle bracelets, and big earrings. Maybe I'll wear pink converse high tops with it. I think I'll just tease up my bangs and wear a side ponytail. Want me to bring my boom box? How about cassettes? Blondie? Duran Duran? The Go-Go's? Bon Jovi? Pat Benatar? Billy Idol? Joan Jett? Cinderella? |

....only if it is a tight curly one, Lennie - Duran Duran definitely - Madonna, Culture Club, Frankie goes to Holywood, Huey Lewid and the news, UB40 and where would you be without Madness. Adam and the Ants - oh ,now I am in two minds as to whether to go as a new romantic.....the poet shirt, the big belt, the exotic makeup and the pirate vest - hang on - that's my son-in-law! (http://www.resmiranda.co.uk/PagesAndTexts/Basil%20Moss.htm) Anybody got any of those left over candles in wine bottles? I'll start the cheese fondue later. 80's retro Peggy - polka dot pumps are back in - you will be so instyle it is unbelievable! I had a red polka dot ra ra shirt - I loved that thing. love and kisses, Jan

Jan. It's actually Sunday for me at the moment so if you like you can all have pre-party drinks with me while you wait for the main event. Sort of like two birthdays really. Oh... the fashions of the 80s. I went through a few transitions in the 80s (from schoolgirl to punk - fashion only - to mod and finally bowing to pressure - the big haired, wide belted, tarty makeup we all know so well). Strangely it is the punk phase that I look back on most fondly. I don't have anything much left from any of these stages but some of the current fashions are frighteningly similar (all the spots etc.). Since I'm not prepared to go there again I might have to settle for everything black (including nails and lips) and maybe paint a few birdies on my face (a la Flock of Seagulls - for those who remember them). I'd also like to make it clear in a public forum that not once in any of my fashion victim phases did I wear black stockings with white pumps (IMHO the worst fashion faux pas ever perpetrated). Since I never really took to cheese fondue I might have to make a chocolate fondue (timeless really) and some fruit to dip in it. And maybe bring some really shoddy cheap plonk to drink - just for old times sake. Looking forward to the music - I was "too cool" for the first part of the 80s to get into the popular stuff. I have to settle for the occasional MTV "best of the eighties". Also keen to see the purple suede boots Jan - now thats the sort of thing worth keeping for a lifetime. Pauline

Pauline - great, that'll be drinks round yours then - got any cheese straws? Cheese and pineapple on sticks? I'll have the dry sherry thanks. Slap Tina Turner on the record player and lets start dancing arond the handbags. (strains of "what's love got to do with it...") You should see my black fabric stilletto ankle boots with the bondage straps.....actually I wore them to church last Sunday.....my feet were wrecked after. There must be reason they call me the "scary woman.." I loved my purple suede pixie boots - they died a death of honourable old age. love and kisses, Jan

Jan when we party we party down here, usually more than one day's worth. I sure wish I was only 50 still. You're not getting older remember you're getting better that's all. Remember women are like fine wine, the older they are the better they are. At least that's what i keep thinking. I'm a 60's kind of girl so I'm coming in my go go boots and mini shirt if that's okay. I'll wear my shimmy top, (a sleeveless top that is short with about 4 ruffles around it in layers. I forgot what they call the tops but it was in style when I was a young girl in the 60's. In the 80's I was wearing polyester stretch pants and had tweens in the house by then. My youth was almost over by then. UGHH I was in my 30's by then and my party days of my youth was over. I'll wear what i have left over from the 60's if that's okay. I'll bring the Gumbo and some Hurricanes from Pat O'Briens. Or maybe I can bring some crawfish. I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

Jan, birthday greetins on the right day now! I read tonight that you are now eligible to join the "red hat" society! Your purple boots would go smashing with the purple dress & red hat requirements. Anyone under 50 only gets to wear pink. Do they have Red Hats Societies in places other than in the US? I never really thought about it until now! Wine coolers were created in the 80's, so I'll bring some along. Or better yet, how about some Pimms?? Peggy

I don't think we have a Red Hat Society - but the logo and a vague sense of awareness of it's existence is starting to creep into the culture. Give it a few years and no doubt it will be established here. Is anybody here actually a member - what do they do - other than wear similar millinery? Or is it a secret society about which I'm not allowed to know? Pauline

Our Jan, Happy Birthday to you! Many, many more. Okay, first I'd love a pina colada! Now, the '80's are an absolute blur to me. I had dd in '81 and ds in '82. Didn't have much time for fashion except maternity there for a while and then yeah right, a fashionista with two slobbering toddlers in diapers..........don't think so....... I do remember fondly listening to Billy Joel, The Cars, Talking Heads and Donna Summer although Disco wasn't my thing. Do you like my outfit? Check out these shoulder pads! I look like a linebacker. And as you can see I did have time for the tight curly perm! Too bad my hair is so short- it's more of an afro, oh well. Oh, Last Dance by Donna Summer. I still love that song. Now Jan, where's the eats???? Not much of a cake and/or chocolate fan. What's party food like in Jolly Ol'????? Lennie |

The salmon is good Lennie, and I always like the crudities and dips - watch out for the chile and garlic - it'll stunt your love life. Houmous, couscous, nachos and mountains of peanuts.....my waistline is expanding as we speak. Those are serious Dynasty shoulder pads Lennie, the skirt is an impressive length too. Don't worry about your hair being a little crisp and smelling of chemicals - that is quite normal. love and kisses, Jan

Hey Jan! I am on my way to your party right now. I have my jelly bracelets, bright pink oversized sweater with black sweater leggings. Two pair of scrunch socks alternating which is on the outside. Oh yeah and my bright pink Reebok hightops. My eyeshadow is pink and blue, pink on one eyelid and blue on the other. OH yeah and I can't forget my big dangling earrings that say FRAGILE. I'll bring some Jiffy Pop the Blue Cream Nesbitt's. Gina

Jiffy Pop was popcorn in an aluminum pan that you held over flame. Here is a link to some pictures (http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLC,GGLC:1969-53,GGLC:en&q=jiffy%20pop&oe=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi). My brother tried to use on in the microwave in the late 80's. That was kind of a pretty light show. Blue Cream Nesbitt' s was the drink of the 80's where I grew up. Basically it was cream soda in a 12 oz. glass bottle but it was a very pretty shade of blue. I became a teenager in the 80's so I am bringing my Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, and Duran Duran cassettes. But I wasn't a total airhead so I will also bring my U2 cassettes (I still have these) too. Gina
