Hey ladies,
I recently stumbled across this website, how I don't know but I am sure glad to be here. Over the holidays I was scouting ebay to try and get ideas for some cute overall decor. What I found has become a burning passion within me that I can't control...I didn't realize how big custom made clothing was on ebay, or HOW CUTE!!!! I have three girls and I am a full time student, work part-time, full time mom and wife, needless to say I have no desire to start an ebay business..but what I do want is pattern ideas. Since Christmas I have been obessed searching the internet for patterns, I have been to my local fabric store, which is a small Joann's, and I have turned up empty handed. I did stumble upon you can make this.com and I think it is awesome also but I just can't find what I want. Most things seem to be peasant tops and what looks like a halter dress paired with blue jeans that also have matching fabric. I have a picture of the one I want that I saved in my ebay account, but I don't want to infringe on anyone's business, but I can't afford $200, for an outfit with three girls!! Can someone help me out, also where do you guys find fabric?? Joann's is not the place!!
Thanks

Can you pop in a picture or a link to the picture of the outfit you're looking for? That might help to track it down. http://sewing.patternreview.com/ is a great place to look for patterns and if you get lucky and there's a review on the pattern you're looking at it can give you an idea on how it turns out.

I'm not sure how you'd go in the US but I get some of my fabric (and most of my patterns) in thrift shops and even a bit from garage sales - (yard sales I think you call them). Otherwise I just go into my local fabric shop from time to time and snap up fabric when there is a bargain. I have to admit I've also been very lucky with having been given a lot of fabric (and a few patterns) from others. It's amazing how many people "used to sew" and have lost the time or interest.

I think this will get you there, I can 't figure out how to link you to the outfit. I don't mind buying a pattern, if I could just find it. I think I may have to mix patterns, but I can find the criss cross halter style top, which is my main concern...I could try to make my own but I don't know how to put the elastic in the back.
Thanks

Check out this site. The patterns are listed by mfg, so you'll want to scan each of the pattern brands on the side panel, these are just the ones that I like the best...

The patterns are expensive but they are multi-sized and really, not that much more expensive than the US patterns when they are half price or 40% off.

For the peasant top/dress I use a mcCall's pattern for gowns and pj's. Works great and Hancock's will occassionally run them for 99 cents. Have you tried Daisy Kingdom patterns for the halter dress? I have 5 or 6 different ones. Again 99cents at Hancock's. As for matching fabrics I usually start with the fun print and match stripes and/or dots to it. Alot of the time I do not even get the material from the same store. If you have a quilting shop check it out for fun prints. I am not at home but I will try to remember to get the pattern numbers when I am there. I, too, do not have time to run an ebay business but love to sew for my great nieces and a couple of friends. By the way what exactly do you mean by criss cross halter - if you mean the one that criss crosses in the front Daisy Kingdom does have one. For the European patterns check out an online store like fabric hound. Hope this helps.

You could use elastic thread or you could just duplicate the back of the garment with a lining, sew it at the top and flip, then add casing lines all the way across. If you us this method, run your elastic into the casing with bodkins or safety pins and start them all at the same time. It is easier to run them across (more or less) at the same time than to do it a row at a time. When I do this, I run the elastic from both ends of the cut so that I don't waste as much. When putting the top together, sew the "cut side of the elastic then fit the top by pulling the uncut end to get a comfortable fit, then cut the ends (be sure that you pin them first and then finish your side seams.

Try this pattern

http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=4201

Simplicity pattern # 4201

I have it and it works up nicely - very full skirt. The only thing is that it buttons at the back of the neck. I just make the tie end longer and wider and tie it. I have made it with the multiple materials the way your link shows instead of with one solid piece. It uses multiple elastic casings the way Pam describes in her post and the fit is great!!
The shoulder straps are wider than the one you linked to, but you can probably adjust the width if you want.

Thank ladies,
I knew I could count on you. I know the link doesn't show the back, I am trying to understand what your are explaining regarding the elastic, but I am at work, maybe once I get home in the quiet and concentrate I can understand, anyway the back is..it ties at the neck in a bow, and it has one single row of elastic on the lowerback, then it is the skirt! Hope that wasn't too confusing, too bad I can't draw on the screen!!

Here is a modified version of what I am trying to describe...if you'll scroll down to the back drawings. It is a little hard to see. I think there are 3 rows in this.

cute!
It reminds me of a dress I made from Simplicity New Look 6477. Although, it doesn't look as nice on the pattern cover, I did the halter top one, I think it looked better, it was more fitted. It also looks similar to 6694
http://www.simplicity.com/index.cfm?all=Y&cat=6&type=0&sec=77&startrow=1

Most of what I do I change a bit from the pattern. Either of these could probably be tweaked to make what you want.

Good luck!

I seem to remember that late last year ckmom002 (are you there Amy?) did one for her daughter in red with a pair of matching pants that were really cute. I've looked back at old posts but I can't find the one I'm talking about. I have a feeling it came from Ottobre magazine but I'm not sure.

I looked at doing for my daughter but thought I might just draw up the front bodice pattern bit myself (with lining) and gather the skirt to the bodice and put a casing with elastic or something in the back. I'll add it to the long, long list of things to get to one day.
