Do I mark my quilting pattern before or after I put the three pieces together? I quilted a small quilt years ago by putting the design on as I went but this quilt is a bed size.

Kylefty.....

There are many methods for marking a quilt. Some quilters use different methods whether they are hand quilting or if they are machine quilting. I am assuming you are talking about hand quilting your quilt. If you have a very intricate design, the quilt top is marked before you layer your quilt together. This is because you may have to use a light box to transfer your design.

Otherwise, you can layer your backing, batting and top together and baste as usual. When you come to an area you are working on, you can place your template on top, trace the design and quilt the area.

Be sure to use a marking pencil that can be removed easily after quilting. Nothing is more frustrating than to find your markings don't come out.

Stay away from soft lead pencils. Check out the notions department for different products that may be available to you. If you do use a disappearing marker that comes out with water, be sure to remove all the product before you put an iron to the area. The heat may bring out the chemical and set the color.

Chalk pencils are good and I am very partial to my Berol silver pencil as I have never had a problem seeing the markings and then removing them when finished.

Hope this helps..........oh, and here is an episode on Simply Quilts by Pepper Cory that might be useful..

I was looking at a Clotilde catalog today. There were two products that dealt with marking that looked interesting. One was a mesh transfer canvas. You trace the design onto the mesh, place the mesh on top of your fabric, then trace it again. The catalog says that the design will appear as dotted lines. The other was called Golden Threads quilting paper. This is for machine quilting. After looking at it again, it looks a little complicated. I haven't machine quilted so it may be easier than my mind's eye can see.

I have tried using nylon netting fabric - drew the design and then used chalk to mark - it worked but the chalk rubbed off during the machine quilting process of moving the quilt around ie stuffing it throught the small harp space etc

I use the Golden Threads paper to trace designs that I will be free motion quilting with my machine. I really like it to do that. But free-motion quilting does take some practice. It would be easier to start machine quilting with a walking foot. A walking foot is used for straight line quilting or gentle curves. Most people use it to do stitch-in-the-ditch. I've done a lot of grid quilting using my walking foot. Here's a site that may help you. If I find other interesting ones I'll let you know.
