I have been using Gutterman poly thread for years and years. Lately I have had problems with it catching in my machine. It has little fuzzies and the fibers are not even. I thought there was something wrong with my machine, but no. Not every spool is like that but enough of them that I am going to change brands. Coats has a good all purpose thread I have used so I think I am going to be buying that as I need it. Anyone else had any problems with either of these threads? MaryW

When I first got my sewing machine I had trouble with what I thought was the tension. It turned out to be the the thread on the bobbin. I had bought Gutterman and I have trouble everytime I try and use it. I've used the Coats without the same problem. Shelia |

Mary I've been having the same problem with Gutterman in my 2044. What really makes me mad is when I'm sewing along on a seam and it frays in the needle and causes my bobbin to jam and make thread nests on the bottom of my seam and it also creates little jams in the spring tension mechanism of my bobbin because of the little fuzzies and uneven thread ends that come out. I've gone back to C&C and Mettler in the last couple of months also and their 100%cotton threads are even worse than the polyester. I bought several spools of the 100% cotton for piecing a quilt top I'm working on and have ended up buy C&C 100% cotton to finish the top with. The Gutterman was a mess and the lint flew from it and collected in the needle threader area and needle bar of my machine and in the bobbin. I was having to clean the bobbin area about every 30 to 40 minutes to prevent the thread jams in the bobbin area. Geeessh, it was a pain and I got rid of it. I threw 3 new spools of their cotton thread in the trash can. Patsy Patsy

i just bought a 500m spool of bottle green that I am having problems with. But I have never had a problem with their 1000m spools. Thought I was going crazy at first, but then I had problems with it hand sewing, so I knew it wasn't me. I will check te spools a little more closely before I purchanse in future.
Cheers, Soph.

How strange this should come up. I just noticed for the first time recently that the Gutterman thread was linty and shedding all over. I remember thinking, this is supposed to be very good quality thread and I'm not impressed. I know there's a difference sometimes from one color to another but I wonder if they changed manufacturers? |

I was thinking that Gutterman was being made some place else now...it may not be Gutterman, but I was thinking it was...does anyone else have any info on that??? These are not the first complaints I've heard. I know that some scissors are now being made in Mexico and the people using the new scissors are not happy. pam

Is Fiskars one of them you'd heard about? I recently bought a pair of fiskars snips, and it can't cut worth anything. I swear there's some times it doesn't even cut through thread. It is ridiculous. Ticia |

I hesitate to say the brand name because I'm afraid I'll slam the wrong one. I do remember that people were saying that they had seen two different brands on the scissors and one said made in XYZ (like her old ones) and the other brand said made in Mexico. She said the ones that had Mexico on them didn't cut worth anything. You might want to double check any scissors you buy. I had heard a lot of complaints about Gutterman thread lately and that was kind of the gist of what I had heard about them too but I don't remember where it was being made. pam

This really ticks me off! Over the last year or so I've been little by little replacing my cheap threads with mostly Gutterman! I'll certainly think twice before buying more. I looked for a Gutterman website and couldn't find one. Coincidentally when my Mom was visiting over Christmas she saw all of the Gutterman threads in my sewing room and she (born and raised in Holland) was really surprised that it still existed. She remembered it from the '30's. Lennie |

I'd heard, and this may or may not be true, that Gutterman is now made in Mexico like Coats and Clark. Of course, this is also said by someone who sells Mettler threads..... So, grain of salt. Ticia |

Well you all convinced me. I'm planning to satin stitch around some place mats for my daughter and bought Coats and Clark instead of Gutterman, which is what I would usually buy. I'm going to have plenty of lint as it is. Dorothy |

I have never liked Gutterman thread, or Madiera. Coates and Clark were all I could get here for a number of years. G + M I found produced a lot of lint and I had a hard time threading needles with them. My favourite thread is Mettler, all types. I have some thread made by Molnycke. I buy it whenever I see it, having orginally picked up some in a small store that was going out of business. The owner said he had never carried much as it was expensive and I believed he said it was Swiss. I keep going back to Coates and Clarke dual duty thread as the colour selection is good and it seems to always be available. I do not find as I have seen written and talked about that C+C shreds. My old home ec teacher was in love with Coates and Clarke supersheen thread. I can still hear her raving about it. My only problem with C+C is I have to put a different thread holder on my machine (laziness issue only) due to the way it comes off the spool. Isn't it interesting how differently we perceive things.

I think there's supposed to be an umlaut over the U in Gutermann, but since English keyboards don't have that - Gutermann put an "E" in there. By the way, if you do a lot of heriloom or lightweight sewing, Madeira has a thread called Tanne. Very fine and makes nice entredeux. YLI also had some heirloom thread out, but the Tanne is much better. Martha Pullen usually carries it. Weezy |

Yes, embroidery thread works well and it adds a nice sheen to satin stitches. The weight is a little different and can some in 30 or 40 weight. 30 Is heavier but harder to find. Very nice for applique, embellishing stitches, etc.

Well, the good news is that Isacord and Mettler are still made in the same plant where they have always been made in Europe (Switzerland I think?)

I gave up on C & C a long time ago! It shreds so badly that I switched to either Guterman or Mettler, but I had some problems with Guterman and switched to Mettler. I think it is just about the best on the market as far as I'm concerned! I can't find it locally, so I order mine. I bought an actual thread color chart and it works for me! I usually buy a few colors at a time as I buy fabric and put it in my stash so I have it when I start to sew a particular fabric.

The cool thing about Mettler is that the color numbers for the Mettler (sewing) thread are the same as the Isacord numbers (embroidery thread) which allows you to coordinate colors on the two for some projects (like for topstitching or embellishments.)
