Today I wanted to sew 3 fabric shower curtains together for a friend (to make a curtain for her craft booth). So I get all ready to sew, but I have no matching thread. I counted over 50 spools of sewing thread, and who knows how many spools of decorative/embroidery thread, and the only thing that even remotely matched was old, old thread from my elderly friend (I use it for goofing around). So off to the store to buy yet one more spool of thread.

So I'm just curious, how many spools of thread do you have? I knew I had a material stash, but didn't realize I have a thread stash also:re:

Long story, but this summer I inherited a bunch of sewing, crafting, and quilting items from an estate sale when it was over. When counted, there were 350+ spools of thread!! I donated them to the sewing teacher. I asked if I could borrow though :)

The person who passed also had a fabric stash that could have been her own store. $1 a yard and on the last day 50 cents a yard. Yes - I bought and bought!

That is pretty impressive! But I do wonder why someone had so many spools. I don't think there are that many colors, are there?

Yes there are that many colors and over the years colors/shades that are popular change. You also sometimes buy because you can't remember if you have that color and want to get started. I have around 400 spools of Isacord poly , 430 spools of Madera rayon, 31 spool of Yenment metalic and 90 spools of Sulky..and that is just embroidery thread! I have about another 350 spools of Maxi Lock in 4-6 spools of the same colors for the sergers (just about every color they've made over the last 15 years) and probably another 450 spool of mis. twists, silks, cottons, etc. for regular sewing. I have about 12-15 spools of wooly lock.

I was brought up in a time when the inside of the garment needed to match the outside and be every bit as neat. For that reason I have tons of Maxi Lock because I still prefer to keep my insides as pretty as the outsides.

Jeez Louise, you opened my eyes! I counted 268 spools of thread!!

I also have a large tin with assorted antique threads.

Now, I do machine embroidery so half of that number is for embroidery and half for regular sewing.

I guess I qualify as a thread stasher..........my fabric stash isn't that huge. Moderate, I guess.

Sometimes when I buy fabric, I think...hmmm, do I have thread to match this. I better buy some now, just in case.

That's why I have so much thread. :re:

OK curiosity got the better of me! I didn't think I had that much thread so I had to count! I have 115 cones for the serger & 193 other assorted spools. Some of this I will probably never use it is so old it is on wooden spools. Some is metalic & there are a few buttonhole & quilting threads mixed in. I also have a LG spool of carpet thread & 2 boxes of brown & cream bobbin size spools of buttonhole thread that was given to me when someone was throwing it away. I didn't think I had more than 100 until I started counting.

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle (aunt, actually). I sat down and counted every last spool. 60 sewing, 60 decorative, 22 serger and "other" - bobbin, quilting, 5 in my machines, and 42 spools from my elderly and now departed friend that I won't use in my machine for anything needing strength.
My total: 189
Not bad for a newbie :bg:

Wow Ladies! What a stash you have!!

Most of you have me beat by a long shot! I just went and counted what I have....and theres 179 spools not including what I have in my thread box at the top of my closet....which isn't a lot (maybe 10-15 spools ).
That includes Sewing Thread, Quilting Thread, Embroidery Thread, and even 8 cones of serger thread.
May your bobbin always be full-

I count only about 30 regular threads from here and probably about the same for the serger but I can't count them from here.
When I plan a project I see if I have thread to match, if not I buy some--the same with other notions.
But I don't embroider.

Mommydionne I'm with you -- not going to bother to count -- let's just say I've got a whooolllleeee lllllooooootttttt of thread; quilting -- hand and machine; sewing and embroidery. Besides, it's scattered in different places, i.e., ongoing quilting projects, different carry bags with projects in them, on at least 3 of my five sewing machines & serger and in 2-1/2 gallon zip lock bags with patterns, fabrics, etc. for ongoing or new sewing projects. I've been garment sewing for years (costume and regular garments) and so I probably have close to 1,000 spools of thread, give or take a few. :nc:

I bet if you think you have a 100 you have a whole lot more. My husband was making book cases for my cookbooks and we got into a betting war. He said I had hundreds..I said I had about 50. When I got over 300 I stopped counting I figured he'd proven he had proven his point.

Thread? The reason I have the colors I have for sewing is because they have been used at one time or another. THe two embroidery kits I will or have used almost all at one time or another (one kit is new).

I use far fewer of the cook books.

All this thread & I cut out a skirt for DD tonight & have only 1 old spool of brown and it is the wrong shade. I will have to add more to my stash as soon as I can make it to the store. I really want to use my serger so will probably but 4 more.

I think I have more thread than any other sewing notion. I just want to add that for those of you who are just starting to sew, if you want to start a thread stash and you find choosing thread in the store overwhelming (it was for me), after you purchase the basics
(white, navy, red, grey, black), choose a color family and purchase them when they go on sale. On one sale day, buy all the purples and yellows or greens and browns  , then on another sale day choose another family. Of course this applies to those who live near a Joann or Hancock who offer the 50% off sales and may carry a thread brand with which you are pleased.

Bear in mind that colors and hues change every year. Although I felt it necessary to have a full wardrobe of embroidery thread, I have never just randomly purchased sewing thread, except for specialty threads like silks or top stitching thread. I usually buy the colors as I need them to match the seasonal colors as they come around. I always color match my threads and I have quite a few colors that are "rare" colors that will probably never be used after that fabric was sewn. It is important, however, that when you buy unusal fabric colors you buy the threads that match at that time. Often they are special seasonal colors and they are never available again. If you have special bridal colors, such as lights during the winter, it is important to buy your threads and zippers while the fabrics are available. If you wait until winter the chances of a match are slim to none. For instance, my daughter chose a merlot color. We bought it in early fall and the zippers and thread were't there. I had left over thread that matched but no zippers (more important than thread).

That is why I have so much thread. I do the same thing. When I buy fabric, I buy thread, zippers, etc. to go with it rather than wait to try and match at a later date.

I won't even try to count my zippers! My sister bought 3 huge boxes at a yard sale years ago for $50. She used them for making canvas pencil cases for an afterschool fabric painting class she was doing at her son's elementary school ( her youngest is 32). When she quit she gave what was left to me. I have donated many to the kindergarten teacher for when they learn the letter Z & sold some & still have 2 stuffed drawers full. They are all colors & go from a 7" - 24" seperating & regular. I think she figured out she paid less than 3 cents each. If this storm doesn't hit us tonight I will go buy my thread after work tommorrow.

I had to join in on this one. I just moved and have only a part of my things unpacked. I counted one of the smaller plastic organizers with drawers and had 397 spools of thread in it. Now keep in mind I have about 3 of these but only 1 unpacked. The serger thread is unpacked also. Somewhere in this mess is a big sweater box of zippers, another of hemming tape and bias tape, and a couple of buttons. You know when you are sewing you just gotta have all this stuff. I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 14 LARGE Rubbermaid totes of Fabrics waiting to be unpacked and that doesn't count all my Fat Quarters.
I could probably win an award for having the most books of anyone. My sewing( all types ), craft and quilting books probably number in the thousands, will never use them all but have lots of fun looking and dreaming.
DH says I am #1 packrat, 45 years of accumulating and won't part with any of it.

Wow -- You guys ARE nuts.
I have a fabric stash and some buttons but other stuff I buy when I am ready to make something. Usually there are left overs or I change my mind so I have a little stash of notions and if I have what I need for a project I use that instead of buying more.
Now books and magazines ..... that's another story.

If you have time to wait, you'll probably see it in about 4 weeks or so...it should come in with the spring colors which are just starting to show up. The fabric usually gets here a little ahead of the thread...go figure.

Okay, I have a complete collection of Robinson-Anton Poly Embroidery Thread, the Maderia Incrediable Threadable Box, about 50 Superior Rainbows and some odds and ends of speciality embroidery threads. I also have two storage boxes of sewing threads and four of serger threads. So tell me, why do I never have the RIGHT COLOR?:nc:
Well, I usually do in my embroidery of course. But I seem to always have to buy the matching sewing/serger thread! I keep the basic serger threads on hand and usually only buy one or two spools for the needles and use a blending thread for the loopers. But, can't do that for the rolled hems of course, which I have been doing a lot lately. Especially on the ruffled blouses and georgette skirts. You would think I have every shade of my "colors" available. But, nooo, I am always either out, or not quite a match. I've given up, when I order the fabric - I order the thread! period

Valerie I have two partially used spools of periwinkle/ lilac serger thread (Maxi-Lok 315) that I stumbled upon a couple of years ago when I was making a prom dress but I don't think I've seen that color again in any of the Maxi-Lok displays that I've looked at here in Oklahoma City lately. However, come to think of it, the Bernina store on the south side may have it as they have a huge collection of serger thread. If you have a local machine dealer (Pfaff, Bernina, etc. you might check with them or they could possibly order it for you.

They have #315 listed here...however, I was thinking Periwinkle was a little more blue than lilac (names can be deceiving.) Anyway, the price isn't bad if it needs to be ordered.

This is for all you gals/guys in the North Carolina area. I received my Singer Featherweight that my dh bought for me on e-bay last week and included in the case with the machine is a huge cone (6000 yards) of Winton salmon pink 100 percent cotton thread from Threads USA in Gastonia, North Carolina. It's the first time I've ever seen a brand name Winton. Is this a brand that is unique to North Carolina? Just curious.

Ok I plead the 5th!

After sewing for years both for my family as well as many other people I don't even dare pull it all into one spot to start counting. Either my hubby or sons might realize how much is involved but without thread we can't sew and it looks much nicer on most projects to use thread that compliments or matches our fabric.

Does anyone need to borrow this idea??? ....lol
