Hi! I make baby bibs and have always used velcro. I am starting to market them and want to offer velcro or snaps. I ordered some snaps and had to do the hammer method, it worked fine, just loud. I also ordered a universal snap applicator type thing, it was expensive (but on sale) and I don't know what to do with this thing. It looks like a massive pair of pliars and the handles are pink and say 'We R Memory Keepers'. I can't find my packageing right off, what is this thing!?! Any insite on snaps is appreciated. I would like to do plastic snaps, but have no idea how they work. Someone help.... Thanks, Samantha |

Yes, thats what I have. I don't know if I'll ever figure out how to use it. I have 14 month old twins and my little brain can take in only so much more : (. Seriously, is this thing hard? Once I settle on a kind of snaps, it will probably stay at the same setting. No one enjoyed my hammering last night, lol! How are plastic snaps applied? Where on earth do I get these things? Or would metal snaps with a colored top look better? I just want something easy and looks nice. tks, Samantha |

I don't really know anything about it. I just did a Google search on 'We R Memory Keepers' and found it at their site. There is also an instruction page but I couldn't get it to load on my machine. From the description it sounds pretty easy to use and it also sounds like you can use 1/8 or 3/16 snaps or eyelets. Hope this helps you. Shelia |

I was able to find this page of instructions. Hope it might help. I had something similar when I was sewing for my babies (youngest now 21!) As I recall it was pretty easy to get the hang of it. http://weronthenet.com/pdfs/CropADile.pdf J Jay

Once you get the hang of snaps they are great, just don't do them when you are tired (with 14 month twins are you ever not tired????) b/c then you do things like a whole row facing backwards etc Don't ask any more about that!

The metal snaps are pretty easy, especially with your gadget - it sounds good on paper anyway. I don't know if it would be good for the plastic snaps though. Years ago, when I had looked into doing a lot of plastic snaps for diapers you had to use a very expensive (I think it was about $80-100, even used ones were a lot) gadget to set them in. It was cheaper for me to buy the plastic ones that came on a strip of fabric that could just be sewn onto the item. They would be ok on bibs but I have about a dozen bibs that I used the metal snaps and they are great. I am tired of velcro and only use it if it is truly the best option. I really love snaps, I'd like a better gadget to attach them instead of the hammer way, let us know how good yours works when you get it going. I am interested to hear. Jen |

Thanks, that is what I have, just can't download because we have dial up (we'll go somewhere we can get into high speed or find the instructions). I think I will stick with metal, lol! Can all metal snaps (non-sew) be done using the hammer method? I see some colored snaps I'l like to try but they say I need their particular tool. Until I get the crop-a-dial figured out, I'd like to be able to hammer at least, lol! Samantha |

I've got one of those gizmos that look kinda like a pair of pliers to install the snaps with, and it works great, or it did last time I used it.. I have misplaced the instructions, so I haven't used it lately.. Most of the time I wait til one of DS's are around so they can do the gripping or squeezing..(that part is hard for me sometime, if my hands are aching) I used it over and over when my boys were small.. and for my GS also.. Not so much for GD, tho..

Hi Samantha . . . did you get your snaps on? I just found this thread, and thought I'd put in my two cents. The metal snaps with the colored inserts do require a special tool because if you try to do them with a hammer and pliers you will break the colored insert which used to be glass(and tho they are probably plastic these days, they will still likely break or get scratched). Those tools are about $13-$14 at Walmart, if you have one near you. Having said that, I will say that I wouldn't use this kind of snap on an item for a baby simply because of the bulk of it. It's pretty thick when you snap the two pieces together and would likely irritate the back of the child's neck if it was up far enough to touch him. The little toddler I take care of hates a bib and would pull on the front trying to get it off, thereby pulling the velcro up against the back of his neck, which just made him angrier . . . I gave it up and leave them off of him. Means I have to change him just about every feeding (cuz he hates eating too) but *shrug* |
