When I first read this I thought you wanted to put a zipper in the shoulder seam and then I thought no, you likely meant center front. So the question is, which one? |

Zipper in the front, down the center, about 9" or so. I can't figure out how to get a perfect square at the bottom of the zipper and not have tiny bits of a raw edge show through at the bottom of the zipper. I don't know how to cut and fold the hem, I don't know what I'm doing. PS: I tried using the instructions that came with a zip neck pattern (not making that particular item from the pattern) but they just don't make sense, and there's so many steps it just can't be that hard. |

http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/1210/vislitgy6.png After doing the step shown in the diagram above, how do I sew in the zipper? Do I put the zipper right side down to the drawing on the right and sew it in by making a square? Then if so, my question is: how do I stop the raw edges from coming through in the bottom corners in that diagram on the right? |

They are telling you to lay your zipper right down, with the end facing towards the neck, sew across the triangle just inside the line, then turn everything to the inside and topstitch around it. If it makes it easier, make a facing and do it as follows. Went and pulled out my book called Singer Sewing for Children Book and looked up exposed zippers. It is as follows: 1) Mark center front of garment, the length of zipper teeth, plus one seam allowance;slash. Cut facing 3 1/2" wide x 2 1/4" longer than slash. Interface knit or lightweight facings;mark centre line. 2) Pin facing to garment, right sides together, with 3/4" above neck edge and marked line under the slash. Stitch 1/4" from slash to 1/4" below end of slash:pivot and stitch 1/2":pivot and stitch to neck edge. Trim excess facing at neckline. Cut facing on marked line;clip diagonally to corners. Serger or zig-zag edges of facing. Turn facing to inside , rolling 1/8" of facing to right side at slash line;(you wouldn't have to do this, but it kind of nice with a contrasting color)press; Centre zipper under opening with teeth exposed and zipper stop at lower end of of opening. So now you have your t-shirt laying right side up with the zipper underneath(also right side up) It says to glue baste it in and Topstitch, using zipper foot 1/8" to 1/4" from edge through all layers. Hope this makes it easier for you. If you haven't got a facing on your opening it isn't too late. You can still do it. Here's another site for you to check out, better pictures. That was really helpful, thank-you! I also learned that the pattern I made may not be working for the type of way that I want to insert the zipper. I came upon something called the "lapped zipper template". The part of the pattern that lays on the fold has an L shape with a vertical portion hanging off the bottom right of the L, so a small portion of fabric like a seam allowance can be folded over and the zipper can be sewn right in, if I understand that correctly. |

http://sewing.about.com/library/sewnews/qa/aaqa0103a.htm I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. I had to sew the collar in and didn't understand that whole process of how to sew in the collar with the proper sides facing each other, and also sewing the collar with right sides facing then turning it inside out. |
