OK ladies, since we have moved 6 months ago we have finally sold our house in NS, yahooooo!!! So that means... we now have the cash (well in May we will have the cash) to finish the basement. Which then means I get a new sewing room, It's won't be as nice as my old one with all the windows but it will be all mine and a good size (we are not sure of this yet, need to measure some etc.) I'm looking for ideas now, I've been perusing the web and realize I'm a totally visual person and like pictures! So what do you have for a sewing space and how do you organize all your stuff?? Lemmee see it ! Thanks Jeanette

I've posted my link before but I'll be happy to do it again! This is the first sewing room which was very small...I was only there a year and it was 7 ft 3 inches by 14 ft...like a long hall... http://kensphotos.smugmug.com/gallery/469317#19021736 When my oldest moved out I got her old space and it is 14X26 total but there is a 6X14 room out of one end that I use as an office, changing area and a pressing room.. http://kensphotos.smugmug.com/gallery/1411738#66902607 The little chest with all the drawers is full of buttons by color. There is a wooden wine rack that holds my extra stabilzer. I have a lovely chest that has a mirror on one half with shelves behind it and drawers down the other side...I keep zippers, fasteners, ribbon, lace and tapes/piping in the drawers on one side. Behind the mirror I keep misc items like elastics, shoulder pads, boses of beads, crystals, sprays of different types, books of patterns, etc. pam

Pam are you talking to me? If so yes that's in my new house, (trailer). My sewing room is fuller then it was then, it's been a year later since I've taken those pics. It's not as neat as it was then either. I need more room. Your pics show a very nice system you have for storage of your threads and presser feet. Those boxes you have your feet in did those come with your Berninia? They are nice. My problem is I have two different machines (brands) and I have to keep the feet separate because even tho they are both snap on some of them don't fit the other machine. Your room is very nice. I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

Seeing these pictures, two things occur to me - 1. If I ever want to really scare my dh all I need to do is show him some of these photos - I don't even have a room - just a cupboard for stash. All other stuff is hidden in various parts of the house and assembled for sewing days on my dining room table. 2. If I'm ever feeling bad about my level of skill I can just tell myself that the lack of these environments and tools is the real reason why - it isn't - but I could probably convince myself. Great sewing spaces ladies. Pauline

I got the boxes for the feet with the newer machine. It came with 2 and a few racks for the boxes. I bought the rest and moved my older feet into one set along with the bobbins for it, the new feet and bobbins into the other. before that I had them in the boxes people put screws and nails in. It worked well but was bulky.

Love your rooms. I am moving house (cheaper and smaller while we build our own) and I am losing my fantastic room in a week. But I did take interest in all of the thread storing ideas. Mine are in a shoebox at the moment. I managed to talk hubby into an extra space in my new sewing room (will be 16ft * 30 ft), but now I am having trouble convincing him I need new storage cupboards too. But with the move next week he has to put up with all of my sewing gear in the L-shaped lounge, so I think I will have him convinced in about a month. I will try and post pics of my current room soon.
Cheers, Soph.

My Maxi Lock is in stacking drawers from Wal Mart. I keep them under the sewing desks. They are stored by color (family) I keep looking for drawers that are just the right height where I could stand them all up and not have any laying on top (the way they are now) but have been unable to find the right height storage. They still sometimes get a little dust because the storage drawers are not completely tight but it is so much better than when they were on pegs in the room.

I had a pegboard for the longest time for my threads. No more of that. For now I have them stuffed in a huge basket and covered overwith quilt batt. I have to keep them hidden, my tiny dogs love to steal them and roll them around the floor thinking they are toys. Some day I will be more organized but I know where they are and what I need at a glance.

I, too, have all the colors of maxilock cone thread. For mine, I did splurge and buy the cone thread boxes when they were 1/2 off at JoAnn. Since I don't have an actual sewing room like many of you here, they work well for me as I keep them stacked in a corner between a bookshelf and the wall. They are dust free and I can see what I have. To save time I even made for myself a little thread chart. |

Nice pix, no real decisions as of yet, waiting for the second quote for finishing the basement I currently have taken over half of my hubbies office, that is working so far, but I have to stay organized b/c the space is small, my fabric is all stashed in the basement in rubbermaid totes. Where do you store your stash? mommydionne, What is that tall black hamper looking thing under your serger table? That looks like an excellent scrap bin. |

Hey Tara, My room is a typical bedroom, 10'x12', I think. Didn't think my stash was well hidden! Pic 3 shows my fleece stash and there are two 4 ft. long plastic bins under that with asst. fabrics. Pic 4 shows best the two wire baskets under the table. In those I keep clothing that we don't want anymore and have value for their fabrics i.e. jeans, dresses with volumes of fabric I like, anything I think I'll use sometime. Pic 4 also kind of shows the 7 plastic containers with stash . If that isn't enough on the wall (where the shoe bag hangs) is a bookcase with more sewing supplies and one shelf of folded fabrics. On the wall I didn't photograph is a roll top desk and another skinny bookcase ~ with books! Lennie |

Hey Lennie, Are you sure that is YOUR room, those babies look like they have taken up permanant residence to me. Enjoyed all the sewing room pics, picking up ideas for mine. When I had my doggies, they were always at my feet when sewing. They only let me borrow the space at the time. We moved recently and am still in the process of trying to get my sewing room organized. I got one bedroom of the house and have loads of STUFF.. I am a book junkie too, so have tons of books on sewing, quilting, decorative painting and dollmaking. If I ever get it all together will post some pics. The computer and paint center takes up a large portion too. Happy Sewing Jacke |

The tall black thing is a hamper, got it at the grocery store for $10, it does fold away flat itself, it is full of "current ideas..." fabric, ie the stuff that should get sewn up in the next 2 months or so. Lennie I got that table at Joanne's when I was living in Ohio, it is great, I prefer to stand as I serge and it is just the right height for me, I'm about 5' 5", That was about 5-6 years ago now, Honestly regarding DH he doesn't use the office much Jeanette

What great sewing rooms. Like Pauline, my stuff is scattered in various parts of our two-room flat. My sewing machine and serger sit at one end of our dining table. I need to clean up the table whenever I want to sew, and then have to clean up my sewing when we need to eat. The only thing that really bugs me though, is that the ironing board is in the other room, so each time I need to press my seams, I need to go there. At least this way I get to exercise at the same time. Isabelle

Isabelle, I have one of those sewing tables with a Ironing cover spinning chair distance from my machine and serger but I bought one of those little ironing boards -- mostly to make it easier for my husband to iron his shirts. It is only a few feet long and about four inches high. Something like that might be just what you need. You can store it up against the wall or under the table and just lift it up to the table beside your machine when you are sewing. Just a thought. Dorothy |

I love the photos you all have shared. I have gone from basement sewing, to hallway sewing to my own little sewing room which was stolen from me by my newest prize possessions...grandchildren! Now my husband has one side of the living room for computer gaming and I have the opposite side for sewing Something about the family that sits in the same room stays together I thought for sure I had registered here before but old age has set in and I couldn't remember so I have signed up fresh and new, just like my obsesssion with sewing again! I would probably rate the amount of notions owned somewhen between expert and wanna be yet the skill is still way below wanna be even after 30 years on and off! Thansk for some new ideas to set myself up! Pam |

When I quit work to sew, my twins were 4 1/2, my dd was 7. I took up 1/3 of a 20x20 living room and part of the hall for my business. It worked out very well. I had barrel chairs in front of my favorite sewing table with a good light. I would sit in the barrel chairs with a friend to do hand sewing, using the back of the sewing table to hold my needles, thread, seam ripper and notions...or my good friend would spin the barrel chairs and talk with me while I worked. I never felt like I was left out of family matters because I was always right in the middle. It was easy for my family to carry on a "regular" life, even when I was the busiest and it was easy to care for the family as I worked. It was great!!

Welcome, New Pam. Happy to have you here. You'll fit right in. And "Our" Pam. No, I won't call you "Old" Pam, really! Your kids are like I grew up. I'm 2 1/2 years older than my identical twin brothers. There were just the three of us. Are your twins boys? It's interesting growing up that way. Have to admit I was quite the jealous older sister of the VERY cute twins that everyone had to see! Luckily I'm past that now (but they're still really good looking!) Lennie |

Yeah, I think the jealousy thing is unavoidable given the amount of time and attention twins require. I know my Mom was always happy that my bros were boys and not girls. That would have made it even more difficult. Lennie |

I was happy with my sewing room until I found a machine I want and it won't fit in my sewing room I have now. It's a Brother Long arm and it fits on a quilting frame. FUnny thing is I never had any interest in quilting that much before I joined SWN My husband is going to ban me from the boards if this keeps up. LOL He's already bought me 4 machines in the last 4 years for Christmas and this year will be no different I guess here comes # 5 and I guess I'll have to get part of his shop for the new machine. : Shurrrrrrrr just don't tell him before I buy the machine I'll tell him that little idea after I get the machine. Ok everbody, Here is a link to my studio pics. Its changed a bit sense I originally did it, I traded in my Singer XL and $5000 and bought a husqvarna viking embroidery D1 machine. (I absolutely love it) I got a couple more industrial machines, and moved 1/2 of my cutting counter out into a pantry. I am absolutely blessed. We added on our addition and it was the best investment we ever made (for me at least) I'm in heaven when I am working. Not in business any longer but actively sewing and quilting all the time. http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/album/421234730deHXun |

Wow! You are one heck of a well outfitted seamstress. Very, very impressive. What specifically was your business? Did you move all of this equipment to your home once you stopped or did you work from home? Many employees? I have the HV #1+, your machine's older sister, lol. I'll be upgrading to your model but not until I'm tired of mine. I still love it so much and it suits my needs very well. Lennie |

I enjoyed seeing everyone's sewing room pictures. My sewing room is too messy right now to take a pic. I still have all the after-Christmas bargain fabrics tossed all over the daybed in here. Spring break is coming up and I plan to spend a couple of days in here organizing it so I can sew the rest of the week. The daybed is going to the basement. I never liked using my sewing room as a guest room and it's ending soon. We've almost finished the den in our basement. Lennie, is that an over-the-door shoe organizer in your sewing room? I might borrow that idea if you don't mind. I have double closet doors in here and could have alot more storage for small items. Dolphinlady, I'd love to have a quilting machine like that! Maybe some day when my kids are on their own. By then, maybe I can talk hubby into letting me have the den dwonstairs for my sewing room. |

HI Bams, I'm still here. Yep, it's an extra large (meant to hold 24 pairs of men's shoes) shoe organizer. It's Martha Stewart from K-Mart for a whole $9.00 or so on sale a while back. By all means do it, it's great. I posted about it several months back because it works so very well. It's real easy to see at a glance what you have. Lennie |

I'm not sure how this posting works. I just happen to stumble onto responses to my pics of my studio. What is the secret to posting messages, replying, and knowing who is responding to my message? Unless they address me a dolphinlady, I don't know if I'm the one being asked a question. My studio is attached to my house right where the french doors are. I had a professional quilting business with my Gammill Longarm Quilting Machine, and all the other machines to Bind, Sew, Label, etc. I finally had to call it quits, I couldn't keep up with the orders or really make any money at it. I spent so much time on each quilt that I was probably getting .25 an hour. Lol. |

Hey DolphinLady, over here! (hee hee) My fault. I didn't address you as such. Thanks for answering my questions. Now for yours. The way I navigate the board is when I log on I go directly to "New Posts". There you will see what's new since the last time you were on the site. You'll notice right away if someone's answered a post you have instigated or been involved with. You won't know you're being addressed unless they use a name (like I didn't ) or in this case it was more a matter of the proximity of my post vs. yours that I guess was the reason I didn't mention your name. There's no real secrets per se. You can go to the "Introduce Yourself" forum and say hi to everyone. Other than that just cruise around and see what grabs your attention. And don't forget the "Search" feature. It's terrific. You can get info from way back. Fun to browse. Good luck, Did I answer you questions? Lennie |

Twice a year I clean my sewing room. By Mar and Aug it is a mess. The room is about 6 ft wide and 10 ft long. So this month am going to move everything out and paint. For storage of odds and ends I save those small crates tangerines come and paint them bright funky colours. I attach them to a wall and store my paints, fat squares, and all kinds of craft supplies. It works. My sewing machine table is 4 ft long and has a curtain going around. Lots of out of sight storage. I also put shelves on every other available space. But it still gets messy. Thanks for all the great ideas for me to use when this months cleaning and painting is finished. jessie s |

TheDolphinLady, Your studio is enormous! And so much equipment too. One look tells me you were definitely a professional. I also love looking at everyone's studios. I've never had one, but recently my oldest son moved out, so we had some bedroom switching going on. I now have my youngest son's old room which is about 11x12 and I've drawn up a plan for my dream studio (or at least one that will fit into this room). But, finances always dictate what we can do, so I'm going w/an alternative plan until I can spend the money on nice cabinets, shelves and a countertop-high cutting board. My alternate plan is to use two 8' folding tables and one smaller one to create a U-shared work space. I will be making a curtain to velcro along the entire length of tables and use the space under the tables for storage in Rubbermaid totes. I may purchase a few of those plastic drawer organizers to put under there too, but haven't done that yet. There is a closet w/bi-fold doors, so I'll have that for storage as well as my son's old dresser. Right now my fabric is in the closet along with unfinished projects. I've got a small 2-shelf bookcase that I put on one of the tables for books and patterns. My thread is in clear plastic thread boxes that hold I think 64 spools. I've got 5 of those just about packed with sewing, quilting and embroidery threads (2 for sewing/quilting and 3 for embroidery threads) and they are sorted by color and type so I know just which box to pop open when needed. The thread boxes are on one of the tables standing on end w/labels for easy access. I currently keep my notions in fabric bowls that I made from a Simplicity pattern in different sizes according to need. I hope some day to have lots of drawers to store them in, but right now this keeps them organized and handy. The room still needs painting and I have a plan for a new curtain (to make the room a little more feminine and comfortable for me), but that will have to wait until I have a little extra time. The colors and fabrics are already picked out. Oh, I love to decorate and am going to have a ball fixing up this room that is just mine! I bet all of you who have a special place to sew felt the same way when you started out. Its very exciting and fun to see other people's ideas and how they conquered challenges on how to best use the space available. SweetPea |

I was using a small space in our office, but since younger dd moved out and it's only dh & me again (so peaceful and quiet!) we've been moving rooms! Our bedroom went upstairs to her room (at least twice the space!) and my sewing room is now our old room, about 10x12(ish). It's great! More light, better layout, more storage! I'll have to do pics later. In our last house my first sewing room (that was all mine!) was only about 6x10(ish!) with the door in the center of the narrow wall with about 15" on either side of the door. When dh remodeled the kitchen I had him take the upper kitchen cabinets and mount them on the longer walls on either side of the door. They are only about 12" deep and you can mount them like you would regular upper & lower cabinets. Also if $$ are an object (like most of us!) try your local Habitat For Humanity resale site. They have loads of useful stuff from appliances to fixtures to cabinets and even some furniture & clothing! A lot of the things that are donated can't be used in the houses they build, so they sell it to raise funds. My dh got an entire set of kitchen cabinets in one for less than $500. Just search "Habitat for Humanity restore" for your local site. Kelly

I've just noticed this thread tonight...and would you believe I started my first show and Tell thread on this site on 3/13/06?? Now, how funny is that! I had previously posted pics of my then sewing area. I have since moved, but fortunately my new apartment had a dining area, which is housing my big sewing desk. My cutting table is standing against a blank wall in my galley kitchen six feet from my sewing desk, and my fabric stash is in very large plastic bins in the spare bedroom closet. Here's the link to my old pics from last year: http://photobucket.com/albums/f253/LadySlopokes/. I have some newer pics that I need to download off of my cell phone...I'll try to get those posted later tonight when I get home from work...OH and my embroidery machine is in my bedroom next to my computer. I thought I'd posted some pictures of my sewing room but don't see it - anyway - here are some old pictures. http://new.photos.yahoo.com/cassiejoy2000/album/576460762316669453 As several have said it is very hard to get the room "picture ready". I re-arrange my room quite often. It's just not big enough and I keep trying to do something that works better. And also, I find I have to move everything to get it really cleaned up. I'm one of those organization freaks. My room gets very dusty so I cannot leave any thread out. It's all in drawers or the plastic matchbox car boxes and then on shelves. It was a storage room back of the garage that my husband converted for me. It's about 16'x16'. One door leads to the garage, which is where I have alteration customers enter in warm weather. Glass panel door leads to small foyer then into kitchen. I started in 2001 with small couch in the room but it has long since gone to another room so I'd have an area for customers to try on garments. The closet has shelves with the plastic drawers on them. The drawers at top of closet contain patterns. Since the 2005 pictures I've gotten a new steamer and new serger. I've now got the Koala sewing cabinet over by mirrors facing the doors and my back to the closet. I don't have the heart to ask my husband to move the mirrors, especially since I'm sure I'll move it again in couple months. |
