I've decided to buy a "walking" or "dual feed" foot for my machine. Started doing a little research online and was amazed at how expensive this particular foot is! I expected it to be between $25. and $35. as a lot of them are.

This foot sells at one of the local dealers for $86.95! I looked around and finally found it on Ebay for $60.99 coming to $65.28 with shipping and a little insurance. I've ordered it.

It pays to look around but my mind has been blown by yet another incredible attempt by the manufacturers to get you with specialized notions.

Jeez Louise! Lennie

Happy Valentine's Day to me.

Yep...each brand has there own feet and charge accordingly. Mine came with my machine...but the price I paid for the machine was enough that it should have been included (and made of gold LOL). I bought my niece a machine for Xmas and the walking foot, darning foot and 1/4" foot were all extras...a "quilting kit" that was $50 for all three. But the dealer had to order them and threw them in for free!

But once you start using it...you wouldn't quilt without it! I use mine for all kinds of things.

Judy,

My machine is an embroidery machine and if I go for the upgrade (Designer I Viking) it'd have the quilting accessories as well as the embroidery stuff.

Now, if I can justify the $7500.00 I'll be set!

They get you coming and going............. IF I decide to upgrade then I'll have 2 walking feet. (Thought I had those already??? :bg: )

I paid 20.00 plus tax and taught that was expensive...
I would have to take a hard look at 60.00 even 35.00...I use it all the time when I am quilting....They are necessary especially when you quilt....You will love it...

Thanks, Vikki, I do need to hear that. :nervous:

Here's to me doing LOTS of quilting after this first one! It's become a mighty expensive quilt. :bg:

You will find yourself using it for more than quilting Lennie. I found myself using it when I had shiny fabric too, because my machine didnt have the variable foot pressure. I also had one material that was waterproof, but it was a cross between vinyl and a soft rubber. No matter what I did (paper, tear off stabilizer etc) it would not feed properly unless I used my walking foot.

One of the main draw cards with my new machine was the built in walking foot, but Janome call it something else. It is just fantastic. I sewed some stage curtains the other day - lots and lots of shiny heavy curtain lining - and never threatened to throw my machine out the window once. :bluesmile

I need to get one soon for my Janome machine Soph - what do they call it?

I won't be using it for quilting but just what you said - shiny fabric and also velvet. I'm guessing now but I figure it would also be useful to sew two pieces of different fabric together if they have different properties - a stretch and a woven for example. Am I right here?

Janome sells theirs with or without that quilting bar guide attached... I got one without, figured for the extra 20 bucks I can measure and line it up OK.. It works for me.. No trouble yet, anyway.. All those placemats I made turned out fine..

I just call it a walking foot Pauline. The one I have for my Janome machine has a notch in the back that the quilting bar guide that comes with the machine fits into.

It would be great for sewing two different types of material together. I have also used it on stretch necklines in particular. It makes it easier, but I am still learning the knack of not having it stretch while I sew it. I'll get there eventually!
Cheers, Soph.

I have 3 sewing machines from old to new all different manufactureres and 4 walking feet. All feet fit on all machines but only the one that came with my Janome has room for a bar and the bar that fits best is the one from my 1950's Elna - which thankfully has markings on it. Sooo if anyone is looking for one perhaps ask some friends that don't sew much if they have a foot they aren't using and try it. Or maybe a second hand one somewhere. $85 is really, really expensive.

About the quilting bar for the machine quilting....

If I had a choice, I would opt to go without it for the following reason. Let's say you're working on your quilt and for some reason your line starts going off slightly....gradually over the progression of additional quilting lines it will become very wobbly.

I find it a better option to mark where you need to quilt and follow those lines rather than using the bar; let's just say experience talking here :) This way your design will be more consistent thoughout the entire quilt.

When I originally bought my walking foot a few years ago (bwhahahaha....a few) the cost was around $50 which I thought was highway robbery. My foot broke last year (my dealer told me I used it to death) and the price had gone up to $125. The kicker is this.....if I ever upgraded to a newer machine the foot wouldn't fit as they have changed the shank prongs on all the models :(

When I bought my Janome I got the walking foot( +bar), a darning foot and a quilting table thrown in.

Interesting that about using the bar, Patty - what do you mark your quilt top with prior to sewing?

Well when I made octagonal placemats for Christmas gifts, I wanted to sew a line 2" in from the edge around each. I used green painters tape. Used my quilting ruler to measure in the distance I wanted and just put the tape down along the edge. Just allowed room for the edge of the foot to run along the painters tape. It worked great...and I could reuse the tape over and over until it didn't stick any more.

I bought my Janome a couple of years before they started catering to quilters like they do now.. I even had to buy my 1/4 inch foot separately...
