Have you ever made a tipi? Did you make your own pattern? The ones I've seen online for kids are so cute and they look really easy to make. So far I haven't been able to find a pattern.

Very easy to make. I made one for my kids when they were small. I got the directions in the Singer book, Quick and Easy Sewing Projects, which you may be able to borrow from the library. I used PVC pipe for the poles.

Good luck!

This is the book I am talking about, and the teepee is one of the projects featured on the cover.

The book actually has several neat, cute projects.

Hope this helps.

BTW, I notice that some of the info from the Singer books has been republished, sometimes combining material from more than one book, and possibly with new material as well. They have new covers, and I am not sure that the Singer name is used on the new ones. I am not absolutely certain, but I believe the new books are under Creative Publishers International...or something like that. I mention this because it is possible that there is a newer version book with the same teepee project in it.
Take care,
Donna

That's great, Donna. Thanks so much!! Easy is what I do best. I ordered a used book from Amazon and can hardly wait to get it. I know it will be a hit with the grandkids.

I've seen those adorable teepee's online and I always wondered if there was a pattern. Are these the ones you're talking about? Does the pattern from the book make one this large?

Hi 4Cloe&Emma,

This looks very much like the one in the book.

The one in the book is 54 inches square at the base and is 56 inches tall. I calculated the diagonal to be just over 6 feet, and 4.5 feet tall. It doesn't have a 'floor', but it would be very easy to add one. You can easily adjust the size of the teepee, if you want. And you could definitely make it for a lot less than $300+.

It is hard to tell from the photo & description, but the one online appears to have a 'floor'. That may, in fact, be the matching play mat, which is an option with the one online, and costs quite a bit more to include it.
Take care,
Donna

Thanks, that is plenty big, and you're right about the picture, the floor in the tent is the play mat which is extra $ and would be super easy to make. It makes sense that it's separate because I would think if you sewed a floor on, it would be easily ripped from kids jumped around in there. Also a play-mat underneath would be easy to throw in the wash if there was an accident (which there always is with kids) :0).

I have another question, what kind of fabric did you use? Would a decorater fabric be the best for durability or is it too heavy?

I used a cotton fabric. The book suggests a mediumweight cotton, for comfort. If the fabric is not 'breathable', it may get too hot inside(so saith the book).

The ones online look like they are made from two complementary fabrics. You can easily layer two lightweight fabrics to create that look if you want.

Honestly, I was shocked by the price I saw online. I was a relative newby to sewing when I made my kids' tent, and I found it to be so easy. The hardest part for me was finding the PVC pipe! :whacky:

Donna

Yeah, I had major sticker shock when I first saw the price. I'd never pay that much. I just assumed it must be something original with no pattern and that's how they charged so much.

So can find your PVC pipe at Lowes or Home Depot now days?

I've seen PVC at the hardware stores. One tipi site I looked at said you could also use bamboo poles from garden center. Bamboo would be more environmentally friendly.....

Hey, I just found a individual pattern for a teepee.

http://store.sewingtoday.com/cgi-bin/butterick/shop.cgi?s.item.B4251=x&TI='teepee'&page=1

Don't know if it's the same thing as what's in the book or not. Anyways, just thought I'd share.

The butterick patterns will go on sale at Hancocks for $.99 pretty often. You could wait until then and save a bunch.

Judging from the measurements given, the Butterick teepee appears to be bigger than the one in the Singer book, and the premade one online as well.

It has six poles vs four for the Singer. That may or may not be a good thing...obviously depends on your point of view. I can't really tell from the picture on the pattern front, but it looks like the teepee is draped around the poles(rather than having casings for the poles), which, I think would make the Butterick teepee less sturdy. Then again, it is just a toy!

I keep a running list of the patterns I want in my purse then wait until they are on sale for .99 cents and usually go in a buy like 8 at a time. I wondered if anyone else did this or if I was weird.
