We have sold out house and are moving to a new one some 30 miles away so I have a new bedroom to play with. Lovely - a blank canvas!!

For some time I have wanted to make a red asian print inspired quilt and now have the perfect excuse. I am going to decorate the room in white with dark wood blinds on the window. It has a cream/outmeal carpet. Thanks to the generosity of friends I have a glorious selection of red, gold and black to play with and decided at the outset that I would make a double quilt and a complementary wall hanging to go at the head of our pine bed.

So, I have pieced (and much enjoyed the design) from 2 patterns for wallhangings I found on the web, but one I have enlarged to make into the bedcover. This is where the challenge begins - I can sew in straight lines, I have a walking foot, I have a darning foot for stippling. My stippling is crude and rudimentary.

I am opening the discussion for inspiration as to the type of quilting pattern I can put onto these.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e81/Janicehodge/IMG_0082.jpg
is the link to the wallhanging - I can imagine just stitch in the ditch around the major elements of the design. It will be finished with either a gold or black binding - not quite decided yet - or possibly an invisible binding. Suggestions please?

this
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e81/Janicehodge/IMG_0085.jpg
is the quilt for the main bed and it will be finished with the gold binding.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e81/Janicehodge/IMG_0087.jpg

shows some of the centre detail.

Now this I am lost as to how to quilt it to complement the design

So, GO!
love and kisses, Jan

In the ditch for the borders, and highlight a few of the centre elements with a bit of embroidery?
Yin and yang swirls??? Definately a yin and yang in the middle of the gold square in the wall hanging.
Love, hope, faith, long-life in Chinese? These are only one or 2 symbols wide.
What's the patern in the white circle on one of the materials? Is it something that can be used as a repeated pattern??
Do an internet search for Sashiko patterns - it is a type of Japanese embroidery, but has great repeating patterns for quilting.
Have I confused you any more???
I have a quilt with sashiko blocks hanging on my wall at the moment, waiting for the same inspiration to hit. It's difficult, because most Asian style quilts etc, have nothing but plain stitching, or are embroidered in gold to the hilt.
Cheers, Soph.

I'm happiest when I am sewing!

Interesting idea picking up the medalion on the kimono fabric - it is a bit like a triskele on a white ground. I could use that inthe large sqares inthe centre portion of the quilt...
sashiko is going to be too hard for my feeble abilities unless I do it by hand - whu=ich is how it should be done anyway.

Maybe I could research some chinese calligraphy....hmmmm thanks

Jan, here are some basic designs that are on the Quiltmaker site. You could any you like in the borders...

http://quiltmaker.com/motifs/motif18/
http://quiltmaker.com/motifs/motif269/
http://quiltmaker.com/motifs/motif5/
http://quiltmaker.com/motifs/motif401/
http://quiltmaker.com/motifs/motif232/http://quiltmaker.com/motifs/motif205.pdf

Sashiko (look down the page for a one directional design
http://www.quilt.com/FAQS/SashikoFAQ.html

Try drawing the design on paper until you feel comfortable with the flow. Then try stitching them on a sandwich. I check my tension to see how the stitches appear top & bottom. On my machine, I usually have to tighten my top tension by 2. e.g. 4 is my usual tension but when free-motion quilting I change the needle tension to 6.

Was trying to be so helpful and give you motifs...I totally forgot to say...I love your quilt & wall hanging. I like the modern look of the design. GREAT JOB!

Another idea would be to quilt fans in various squares. Saw a simple fan design on the site below...Use the Choose a Pattern and select Oriental. They have some Japanese lettering (Four Winds) at the bottom too...

Hope some of these help give you some ideas

Really lovely quilts Jan:cool:
I always take ages to decide how to quilt something. You have some great suggestions so far too - I would stitch in ditch borders etc and put motifs in the blocks especially the central one picking up a theme from your fabrics- cant wait to see what you decide to do :bg: I love looking at other quilters work

hhmmm...looks familiar...:re:
I'd border the wall hanging in a gray, picked out of the lantern print. (because using a lighter color will make the RED really stand out..as will black, but you already have a lot of black.)
Kanji and Chinese characters (are really the same but don't tell the Japanese, they don't like to hear about it..)
I'd opt for something simple in the quilting....(thats me, simple...:bolt: )
I do a lot of free motion (stipiling) because I can...but I also have some embroidered quilt patterns I'm dying to try out...and now that I have my 11,000 back. I might do that.
I also like just stitching in the ditch, then moving the fabric over to the edge of the walking foot and doing another line, and keep that up till I have a small square in the center...then you can do something to fill in..

Great job btw...

Hope your machine keeps working this time Kath. I am going to stitch in the ditch around the large squares on the wallhanging and do some parallel line on the parasol border - I think I will do an invisible binding as it will be on a pale wall and will stand out quite strongly.

Having trouble getting my walkiing foot to feed top and bottom evenly - I seem to end up with puckers onthe top - do I need to increase?decrease the tension?? help please - my magic seamripper and I are in business.

Jan...just wondering if you have the bottom and top pinned properly. I know that the first quilt I quilted with my walking foot, I didn't have the top and bottom smoothed and stretched properly before I pinned. Had lots of wrinkles especially on the bottom. Now that I do stretch them out and pin...everything works great. This is a good site for the techniques...
http://easymade.com/video_basic.html

Another thing that I do is to make my stitch length longer. When I turn my machine on it is usually at 2.0 but when I use my walking foot I change to 3.6. I find a short stitch can cause me problems due to the thickness of the fabric.

If you have the walking foot on make sure you DO NOT drop your feed dogs as you want the fabric to be fed through your machine.

Don't pull on the fabric, let it be fed under the foot naturally.

Listen to Judy and pin...pin and pin again! when I pin, I pull the backing taught and then tape it down to the floor.

I am using quite a short stitch length - and I will attack the pins thing - I have spray basted. Thanks for the heads up. Will let you know how I get on. It is not the bottom that is wrinkling - it is the top, for example - when I sew in a closed shape (a square) there is more fabric left at the end on the top leading to a pucker at the last corner

Thanks for the link Judy - but I could not get it to play.

I have taken it all to bits with my trusty scalpel (Very carefully) , taped the backing to the floor, spray basted the batting and top into position and pinned like the very wind - I feel like the Tailor of Gloucester.

I am amazed at how much better the whole thing looks before I even get near a machine and try the long stitch thing. Thank you so much for the advice - I am trusting all goes well now as I was so dissapointed to have made such a fun top to be let down by the quilting. It is usually the piecing thing that I enjoy in the creative process - pinning and tacking I have tended to be lax with but I am a reformed character:bluesmile . I'll keep you posted as to what happens next - I have to stop sewing for a bit to make Sunday dinner (chiz chiz chiz) but , in the words of our favourite Mr Universe, "I'll be back!"

Ai caramba! That makes a difference! I think I was also being a bit heavy footed on the gas as well so I have slowed down to give my (walking)foot a chance to grab everything it needs to.

Thanks Gals, tip-top, top tip!

Jan, glad your machine quilting is going well.

I want to talk about your wall hanging for a minute if you don't mind. It is just beautiful! But, when I look at it I see blood being filtered.....or possibly the yellow as muscle fibers...striations?

Because you are a woman of science, I don't connect the quilt as Asian themed.....I'm thinking more along the lines as what could this represent in science.

Maybe this is just a Yungian approach? :)

OK - so I have happily stomped along with my walking foot and done all the straight lines I want. I have now replaced with my darning foot, dropped the feed-dogs and am practicing some stippling and free motion stuff on a spare bit of sandwich. Problem - the bottom bobbin thread keeps coming up to the top especially when I go around corners. I am sewing with a fairly even fastish speed and I can keep my stitch length about right but the darn bobbin thread keeps on looping to the top. Most frustrating as this is about the only evening I have had to sew for a long time and I can't!
Any suggestions - it is bound to be something simple - I have changed the top tension in case that is the problem - nada.

Jan, are your top & bobbin threads the same weight? I usually have the reverse of you when I do free-motion...top thread goes down to the bottom. I usually sew with my tension at 4 on my machine. When I free-motion, I usually have to tighten my tension to 6 (sometimes 7) when I'm using 50 wt thread. When you changed your tension, did you loosen it? Also, check that your bobbin is threaded correctly. Once I was having problems and the thread had come out of the guide in the bobbin and there was no tension.

Another suggestion is to try free motion without dropping your feeddogs. I often don't drop them and I find the thread tension is better.

Just some ideas to try.

I tightened the tension Judy to 6 with no avail. I have changed the thread though (only thinking of colour to match back and front not weight) and it may be that the top is heavier than the bottom - I will adjust that and give it a try - and if that don't work I'll give the feedog thing a go. Thanks for the suggestions - I'll keep you posted.

Jan if your top thread is a heavier weight, you would generally have to loosen your tension to accomodate the heavier thread. Right now I am quilting with 50 wt in the bobbin and 28 wt for the top thread. I didn't have to change my thread tension much at all...only close to 5. Another thing is that you may be moving your fabric too fast especially when going around the corners. I know that I usually have to do some practicing to get the right speed to move my fabric when making the curves. Another thing is to try to practice with the same fabrics and batting that you will be using in the quilt.

Most of all, don't give up...if I can do it and others can do it, you can too!

Your quilts are lovely.

As to your current dilema:

As someone else said, I've had this problem when I moved the fabric too fast particularly around curves.

Also, this may sound really stupid, but I've had that problem when I forget to put down the foot. Since the darning foot doesn't touch the fabric, I'll forget to put it down and then the tension is off.

Just a thought.

As another beginner, I discovered while free motion quilting that I was all hunched up and tense, thereby screwing up my pattern and my stitches. I had to keep stopping and telling myself to relax and enjoy this, then I'd be good for a while until I found myself all tensed up again. I wonder if a glass of wine while quilting helps??

Well, having had a good old go at free motion quilting .....
I changed the thread so that it was the same weight top and bottom, slowed down on the corners, donned my large yellow marigold gloves and slurped the wine. What a winning combination. It is not the most expert of quiting admittedly , but it is all mine! I have meandered my way thrugh the large gold square, echoed around one set of chopsticks and the appliqued squares and outlined various items inthe border fabric. I will start the binding tomorrow night and then it wil be proud photo time.

my word, but that stippley thing is addictive.....I have a matching quilt to do next......

Vickki, it's not as easy as it looks but like anything else, it takes practice. Use the same weight thread on top and in the bobbin, try to use an even speed as you sew. Something I was reminded of this weekend is that when you stipple try to sew away from yourself. If you watch the video that is the way she does it. I had problems figuring out where to go until I started doing it that way. Good luck.

Jan your projects are beautiful. I bet Tony will love laying under those new threads.

I am trying to quilt a quilt I made for my grandson and I got about five lines diagonally threw it and it's getting harder and harder to pull threw the machine. I started in the middle but it's hard pulling all the fabric threw my machine. It's a Janome 9000 and has a pretty large gap between the needle and the machine but it's making my lines come out wavy. I'm not ripping it out so I guess I'll have to keep on going.

Jan I might just take your advice and break open the ole bottle of giggle juice and try that. If nothing else I'll have a good giggle. (that's all I do when I drink wine..........continuously giggle):dave:

He very generously said that this one doesn't look scrappy - he doesn't like quilting, can't see why I do it and thinks we have enough - why would I want to make anymore? But hey, we have different hobbies and he cheerfully coughs up when I need him to so why worry. I didn't quilt for 12 years after we got married because he said he didn't like patchwork - then I got the hang that I could do things because I liked them. Susie, I'm no expert although Jan may think differently :bg: , I will give some advice that I found when I researched the shifting problem. I have a book by Harriet Hargraves, Heirloom Quilting, and she suggests you don't sew from the centre out as she said this could cause it to shift. She suggests you anchor your quilt by sewing down the entire quilt either at the centre or close to the centre. Then she suggests that you sew across the quilt either at the centre or close to the centre. Then you continue quilting the way you want. If the quilt is a diagonal set, she suggests anchoring by sewing in an X pattern i.e. from corner to corner.

Also from my experience, the quilts shift if they have not been pinned properly, i.e., you have to have the backing stretched taunt and then pinned to the top every few inches. Hope this helps.

You may or may not have helped Susie but you've helped me for sure.

I'm still afraid to get started. I'll know when the time's right. I just keep reading the advice as it comes along and letting it sink in. I'll know when the time is right.......... :bg:

It is a good job this thing is in red - the amount of my blood that has been stabbed from me by those thousands of pins. ouchie ouchie ouchie.

Have just about blocked out the main areas and then I will start to quilt into the different patches - some will be stippled, some geometric and some follow the design of the fabric. The nice thing is the design process. Do a little bit, step back and go hmmmmm it could do with a ....

Just thought I'd get you up to date.

Jan, when you talk about stabbing yourself with pins, I hope that you are using safety pins and not straight pins. :re:

Re my Advent Quilt...it is going slowly due to a few reasons. It is all put together except for the outside borders. I'm trying to get enough fabric to cut the boarders for all sides on both front & back....90" x 106" is a lot of length. Had to get more fabric for one set of borders and the shop was sold out. Finally found a FQ to match. And the hassels has taken the drive out of me to work on it. Gotta get back in the mood or it will never get finished.

Hey Jan...here's a link to some tools. The Kwik Klip is great but a spoon (esp. a grapefruit spoon) will also work.

UK - Curved Basting Pins (at bottom of page) (http://www.cottonpatch.co.uk/acatalog/pins.html)
Safety Pin Grips and Kwik Klip (http://www.patchworks.com/fingertips.htm)

Here are a couple of links to how to pin baste...in case you need them! :bg: No stabbing afterwards!!! :dave:

Judy , you are a font of wisdom! I love the look of those curved safety pins - and an English supplier - what a star you are. Yes - I am using the stick in you type but you can be sure that next time.....

I had to move all sorts of boxes/furniture and so on to find a big enough piece of floor space to lay out the backing - this I masking taped to the floor as you suggested before and the resultant quilt is looking by far my best to date. I have mostly "stitched in the ditch" around random squares and rectangles of different sizes in the central area so it is becoming more managable now with less pins in.

Thank you Mary for your kind words - I have never thought of my quilty goodness as awesome before - the fabrics really make the quilt. And it wouldn't look anywhere as good without the continued support of all my SWN buddies - I love you all!

Now, Judy, do you need a talking to? C'mon - get that UFO out of the cupboard and have another look at it - just a little bit at a time and it will get done. Small realistic goals - for the woman who can make an amazing retirement quilt in no time scratch it should be a doddle. ( catch more flies with sugar..)

Now about stompin' on me with your stilettos...I'll get that advent quilt finished someday! But it won't be this weekend. On Friday night I'm in a Breast Cancer Quilt-a-thon! Yeah, me who only machine quilts is going to be hand quilting! This is a pic (http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=505942974&size=l) of the quilt I'll be working on with a bunch of other ladies. If I survive the quilt-a-thon, on Sat. I'll be going on a shop hop quite some distance from Ottawa. So again...the advent quilt will be sitting on the sidelines. :re:

Hey Judy....will the quilt be raffled, or is it one that goes on display in the furniture stores as you had talked about before.
Patty, this quilt will be raffled. It is made from blocks submitted in the Northcott Quest for a Cure Challenge. This quilt shop agreed to assemble, quilt and raffle it. I believe all these blocks were submitted from quilters across Canada. This weekend is the event. I've never participated in anything like this before....but I've sold 27 books of raffle tickets ($135) and have raised over $100 in sponsorship from people at work.

Judy,

I can see why so many tickets have been sold! I went to the ebay site to look at the quilt pink quilts and they are all very similiar with not much complexity to the patterns. I also feel that hand quilted quilts are more appealing to the public than the machine quilted ones and sell more raffle tickets because of this aspect.

Wow....when do you stop selling tickets because I'll buy some from you.

Jan...maybe you should tell Tony that if he wants a bigger bed you'll accommodate him...you'll keep the one you have and he can buy one for himself. Bet he'll think twice about it!!! :bg:

Patty...sorry but the tickets are all sold :bluesad:... But I did my quilting stint tonight. I got to quilt the block with the blue birds in the middle...which BTW was my favourite block. Just lucky that they were at that spot when it was my time. I invited my quilter friend from work to come help. She's been hand quilting for over 20 years and did 3 blocks to my one...so that gives you an idea on my hand quilting skills...
