Just as the public is becoming wiser regarding cell phone use while driving, a new program is being touted by the city of San Diego.

Apparently this program is for drivers to get up-to-the-minute info on traffic conditions, alternate routes, delays, etc. All you do is dial 511 then enter the appropriate info regarding your specifics. Come On!!

It's been a very successful program in San Francisco and other big cities the article goes on to say. I read the entire article to get to the part about the "opponants" to the program that would be making my point but there was nothing.

I can't believe the city would be proposing this instead of a ban on cell phones. More and more evidence points to the fact that cell phones cause accidents! Just like newscasters/reporters mention that the victim was or was not wearing a safety belt they are also mentioning the fact that the victim's cell phone use could possibly have been a reason for the accident.

I JUST DON'T GET IT!

Lennie, although New York State has a law against phone cell use while driving....guess what? I see drivers on the phone all the time - even in winter driving when both hands should be one the wheel for the safety of EVERYONE on the road.

I have come to believe that common sense is missing - even in supposedly intelligent people.

Making laws is one thing......whether or not the public follows them is another story..

Reminds me of an editorial in the newspaper this morning about the Bank of America issueing credit cards and mortgages to illegal immigrants. According to this accountant writing the editorial, under the Patriot Act the bank is required by law to see a social security number. Now, where is an illegal immigrant getting a social security number... ... or the bank is processing the accounts without following the law.

As I said, it is easy for laws to be made, but following them is another story.

There are laws in all the states that aren't kept by the authorities...and there are some they keep, but only on their terms...so it makes it difficult for anyone to know what the laws are and why NO one gets a ticket, picked up or even help...
MT used to have no speed limits on the freeways. But
-I- managed to get a ticket once, doing 80, no one around (of course in MT there is/was very little traffic), the highway patrol pulled me over and gave me a, Misuse of public services ticket...(I wasted gas by going fast in my Honda, which got 32 mpg)..it was a $5. ticket and I paid the officer...thats the way things were done there. But I wasn't told to slow down. (no speed limit)
Here theres a no stereo noise can be heard 25' from a car or 50' from a dwelling. NO one does anything about that law. It's a state law. You call the cops, they don't come, you call the sherrif's dept, they hang up on you.
I've had cops sitting behind me when someone runs a red light. They never go after the car that runs the light.
I haven't seen such apathy in a state as I have here, for
upholding laws...
So Lennie...don't feel bad...(I used to live in CA...and they aren't bad there compared to some states...)

Recently here a young girl who just had gotten her driver's license was driving and talking on her phone, she hit a pedestrian and killed her. Why doesn't the gov't see that cell phones and driving are like being impaired and driving??? I almost crashed my car once while talking on the phone and going around a curve. Never again!

The idiots around here that talk on cell phones usually hold up traffic. They are moving so slow and not watching where they are going they can't make up their minds if they want to go left or right and then the rest of us miss the light ect. Once you get around them and look at them like they are nuts they look back at you like, "What did I do".
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

It is illegal in Australia to have a phone in your hand while you are driving. This is to cover sending text messages as well as talking on the phone but also allows people who have hands free installed to continue using their phone.

And let me tell you it is fairly strictly enforced. I know quite a few people who have been charged for it. Most people now are getting some sort of speaker/hands free system. If I haven't plugged mine in and the phone rings I'll either pull up or not answer the phone. It can usually wait.

In New York you can use a hands free phone but what gets me is it is ok to dial the phone while driving.
If you are talking, you can pay attention to what you are doing and talk at the same time -- you would if someone was in the car with you. That's why it is ok to use a hands free.
But if you are dialing you have to look at the phone, right. I dial mine before I even start the car. While I am on the road there is no need to phone someone.

We don't use our cell phones while driving. If the caller is one of my family, I'll answer and tell them I'll call as soon as I pull over. But both daughter and I have phones you can "voice train". You tell it what to dial and it does. She did train hers out of curiosity, but doesn't use it.

My point is not so much to get laws against cell phone use while driving. I know it's pretty much futile. My point is more of why make a bad thing worse? It's a big step backwards in my opinion.

I carry a cell phone and use it from time to time on the road as well. I'm very choosy about when I answer or make a call though. And it's never just to chat.

I think a better solution for the traffic problem would be to have a station on the radio that is nothing but traffic. I know there are plenty of cities that do that. Granted there would be no interaction but it's a whole lot better than interacting with the car in front of you!

And Dorothy, it took some concentration to see what the figure was on your avatar. At first it looked like some weird tongue or fetus or something........I see now it's a sandal! :whacky:

I thought it was a zombie Sunbonnet Sue...
.....what does that say about me?

Supposed to be illegal here to talk on the phone (though OK with hands free) and drink froma water bottle . Lady got fined for doing that at a red light and yet phone users are ignored frequently. sheesh.

That law does seem daft Lennie.

Lennie - it's not a sandal - it's a thong.

However I think I liked the avatar Dorothy had yesterday better.

Pauline, Yeah, I knew that and call them thongs but I didn't want to have to distinguish between the undies and the shoe!

I'm a great fan of thongs (shoes not undies :bg: ) You're not allowed to be a Californian unless you have at least two pair.

I'm guessing there's a similar rule in Oz.?? :bg:

Lennie

(And funnily enough Jan, I can honestly see a psychotic Sunbonnet Sue as well. Maybe that's why we hit it off........)

It sounds like California would be the state for me. DH recently had a semi offer to come and work in Minnesota which we only discussed briefly because we didn't think we could handle the cold. There was also an opportunity (not so much an offer) of a job in England which we entertained as well - mainly for the proximity to Europe.

But even though I dislike the extreme heat (and we've had a few of those lately) - I just could not handle all the cold some of you ladies have to put up with.

Pauline...you haven't lived till you've had your nose hairs freeze....

:bg: :bg: :bg:

I'm a bigger fan of the cold than the heat...but I really can't deal with the snow anymore. (thats why all the snowbirds come down here...they don't wanna deal with it either...)

Pauline and Lennie, It's not a sandal or a thong it's a Flip Flop. Because it goes Flip Flop when you walk with them on your feet. :bg:

Frozen nasal hair. Thats just something I NEVER want to experience. Are you serious about that Chrys or am I being conned?

I've only ever seen proper snow about 5 times in my life and it was a long drive to get to it. Last time we went to the snow we bundled up, spent an hour or two playing and then I spent an hour or two trying to warm up hands and feet again.

They do that in Michigan too. I used to get so mad at my kids for wearing shorts and no coats when it was still so cold out. I saw a couple of kids in shorts today and its only 34.
