Hi, everyone, My name is Vicky. I've been visiting Sew What's New for a few years now and lurking every now and then on the forums. This is definitely one of the friendlier sewing places on the internet. I've been sewing for over 30 years and have sewn just about everything at one time or another. I had a home sewing business for three years and found out I do NOT like sewing clothing for other people. Fitting bodies started leading to my early demise! I began to only sew home dec, which was better, but sewing as a job took the fun right out of it for me so I stopped my home sewing business. I now only sew what I want to sew (or what my daughter's want me to!) For money, I work part time as a nurse. Quilting and cloth doll making are my first loves. I just finished my 8th quilt which was for my oldest daughter. Next a quilt for my youngest daugter, which she has designed herself. We'll see how that develops! I know I have picked up some great tips over the years from SWN and I hope and I can pass along a little of my experience. Vicky

Welcome, Vicky! It's nice to meet you. You have been sewing for longer than I have lived. What an experience you must have built along the years - you'll definitely be a welcome help here Isabelle

Out of the mouths of babes. Welcome Vicky. I started myself as a lurker but this site is sort of compelling - it draws you in almost like a soap opera - and wanting to interact with the "players" overcomes most shyness or hesitance. I can certainly relate to what you say about not sewing for others. From time to time (and I bet we all do it) I've offered/been manouvered into making/repairing for others. Small occasional jobs are fine but sometimes in the midst of a large and overcommitted task I start to hate sewing. That usually reminds me to be firmer or more careful for a little while at least. Often at this time newbies are urged "don't be afraid to ask questions". Instead I'll say - join in with your answers. Will catch up with you somewhere around the boards. Pauline

Don't worry, Vicky! I'm "old" like you and have been sewing for about 37 years. It's not always been a daily thing like it is now. It seems that years ago it was just part of being a housewife. Making clothes for the kids, curtains for the house, etc. was just another thing we did. When I look at the price of patterns then ($1.00 vs. $14.00 now) and fabrics it's just not as "user friendly" as it was then. It WAS cheaper to make your own. That's a shame. Anyhow, welcome and hope to see you around often. Lennie |

Welcome to the gang! Like you I've been sewing for a very long time-over 40 years. I just wish I had more time to sew than I do! We'd love to see pics of your sewing ventures! Lyn
