Had to do quite a bit of very fine seam clipping (just neatening up and removing excess - not notches) today on a tshirt for a teddy bear (long story). Up until now I've just been using my dress making scissors but it occurred to me that there is probably a better option. And I'm not talking about a serger! What scissors do you guys use for this purpose? Pauline

I had been using my Gingher dressmaker's shears for clipping all these years as well. My husband and daughter got me a nice little pair for clipping this fall for my birthday, and I couldn't be happier. Their size is easier to control for precision, and they go through layers and layers of just about anything like butter. I used the online "scissor selector" (http://www.gingher.com/tools/scissors.aspx) to pick them out, and then they found them for me at the fabric store, although I'm sure they were available online as well.

Andrea, what type did you finally get.......brand and size. I really need a good pair when making these little dresses I have to cut away all the bulk on the inside of the bodice and it can get hairy with my dressmakers. I see Nancy Zieman and some of the other on the shows using some little scissors for those type of things. I'd love to get a pair for clipping those seams.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

There was a time when I used my dressmaker scissors for everything. Over the years, I have amassed quite a collection of scissors while looking for the perfect pair. I now keep a few nice dressmaker scissors at the cutting table but the scissors that I keep with me all the time are these. They are small, and light weight, easy to use when clipping curves, getting into tiny recesses, but large enough to trim seams and do larger areas too. If I did a lot of doll clothes, I might prefer these in 4 inch size instead. For general sewing these are wonderful! http://www.hancockfabrics.com/product/34481.html These are great for triming embroidery jump stitches. I have some that are like them that are Havel brand that are a little better. The blade is curved and thin so that it can get close to the fabric. http://www.embroidery.com/product.asp?sid={18227B4F-E02D-427F-8629-9D96CA1EF348}&EFID=1126&productsetid=52112&shopstop=1 pam

You can get the Mundial scissors for about $16 but the Gingher are better. I figure that good scissors are an investment. My DD and I do mean "D" took out 2 good 8" ginghers and a pair of the 5" in ONE DAY because she was trying to clip the wire on her braces. When I came into the room she had ruined about $100 in scissors...each one had nicks out of them! She was about a breath away from being my "LATE DD". pam

Thanks for asking that question, Pauline. I'm on my way to run errands and was going by a JoAnn's (big surprise) with a 40% off coupon. Might just invest in some good scissors. I like the ones Pam recommends. Hope I can find them there. Lennie |

Pam, thanks so much for recommending these scissors. I got the 5" Gingher knife edge for 40% off at JoAnn's. They're normally $26.00 I think and I don't think that's bad for the quality. They have heft and just glide through the fabric. I used them today for the first time for seam trimming, etc. a more comfortable handle would be the only improvement I'd make. Thanks, Lennie |

I have used them since 1992. Once you get used to them they are like your right hand. They are among my favorite small notions.
