I was sent this for help, if you have suggestions please post them here. Thanks everyone.

I have a nightgown pattern which I just love. It was a size 26 and
with lots of work I made it into a size 18, but there is too much
fabric in it and it takes 4 5/8 fabric for the nightgown. Its a
sweetheart neckline type } kind of like a parenthesis. It has a
gathered lace yoke and is very long. The sholders and yoke fit well,
but the body of the nightgown has too much fabric in it. I'm looking
to save fabric. Any ideas.

If the fabric is just gathered onto the yoke, you can just pleat the pattern lengthwise to reduce the fabric used. If it is uncut, this shouldn't be a problem.

If it has already been cut, you'll need to refold the pieces cut on the center fold, tuck the pattern and (unfortunately) recut the side seams. If the top of the garment is flat, you may be able to match the side seam of the pattern to the side seam of the garment and slide the center fold over so that you actually have one long piece of cut fabric instead of two narrow strips. If the back has a center seam, you may have to recut the whole thing, just depends on how the garment is made.

It is usually recommended that you take seveal tucks instead of one long one. However, if the pattern is pretty "square" that will not be a problem. Since this is a nightgown you probably do not have anything to adjust. If you were doing this with a jacket or something our would have to reset the pockets and other embellishments so that they were in proper position.

I know this is going to sound very inexperienced, but what would happen if I cut out an inch out of the center seam, where it says, "place on fold"? Maybe 1" or less.

I'm 5'7" and love a long nightgown, is there a way to make a yoke style nightgown with long sleeves for less than 4 4/8" material? Thanks for the input so far everyone.

On most patterns it is not recommended. However, if this pattern is flat across the top so that it bumps up to the yoke? It should be fine.

I'm 5'8" but I always judge by the pattern as to how much fabric it will take or I lay out all the pieces myself and measure how much it might take. I have a cutting table with grafted squares...so I cheat since it isn't hard to lay out on that. Since you are sizing downward to a smaller size, judge the amount by what the fabric allowances are for the new size and take it with a grain of salt. When you get small enough some fabrics will allow you to lay pattern pieces beside each other and save space. HOWEVER, you have to duplicate the pattern size to do that AND if this is 45" fabric, unless you are a child, you may never be able to lay a full gathered garment with both sides next to each other.
