Whew....I didn't know if I was gonna be able to do it but here is my first paper pieced block! I have actually made two of them to be used in a quilt I am making for my manager's retirement.

Looks fantastic!

Is paper piecing the same as what you do with hand patchwork (sew fabric onto paper templates and then stich them right sides together with a whip stitch). How would this work on machine?

If you think it's too complicated to explain that's okay. It's just that I have a long unfinished hand patchwork item that I've considered trying to complete by machine.

THanks Donna.

Pauline, no this type of paper piecing is sometimes called foundation piecing (http://www.nmia.com/~mgdesign/qor/technique/pfp.htm). The type you do with the whip stitch is called English paper piecing. I started a grandmother's flower garden a couple of years ago doing the English method and have 18 flowers done. Will finish it one day... maybe:wink: You can sew them by machine but it can be tricky. You have to mark the seam lines and corners, etc. Good luck.

I love your block! Looks like you did a fantastic job! Now I am going to have to go searching for a pattern... wonder if they have one similar but with the curled up husky tail on it?

Thanks Judy - I pulled it out again and will finish parts off by hand and change the plan to finish the rest on machine.

Great job Judy! I have found that some blocks are much easier to paper piece than put together in the conventional way. That looks like a "3sisters" (at leatst I think that's the name of the site) pattern. Is it?

Thanks everyone...that block was a challenge and I don't even want to calculate how long it took to make the two blocks. I just know that I was not able to listen to the TV while working on them as every time I did, I'd get distracted and do something stupid like use the wrong fabric for a piece and have to get out the ripper.

That looks like a "3sisters" (at leatst I think that's the name of the site) pattern. Is it?
Lyn, it's not 3sisters. When I was googling to find husky fabrics, I found this block on www.silverliningsoriginals.com (http://www.silverliningsoriginals.com). Linda Hibbert is the designer and she has oodles of beautiful paper piecing patterns for sale. She does a BOM and posts a block each month which can be downloaded for free each month. Feb. is a red rose...but I don't plan on doing any more paper piecing in the near future. :bg:

Judy they are beautiful!!! All your work is beautiful.

Where did you get the pattern for the thread clipping holders for the serger. The lady at our quilt shop has one and she doesn't know where the pattern is to let me see how to do it. I'd love to make one for each one of my machines. I hate picking up thread off the floor before I vaccum and if I don't I have thread wrapped around the roller bar on my vaccum UGHHHHH I bought one of those rollers with the sticky tape on back and that works pretty good but a friend of mine saves all her threads in one of these little things and then she makes something pretty out of the clippings when she has a full one. Pretty evening bags with satin or brocade with this stippled on top with colorful embroidery thread. They are very pretty and different.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

Susie, the thread catcher is made from a pattern I bought here in Ottawa that is designed by a lady who works at a LQS. But here is a thread where I posted some links to free patterns similar to the one I made.
http://sew-whats-new.com/vb/showthread.php?t=18885&highlight=thread+catcher

And I have learned to do the same as your friend and save all my threads. Since I only quilt it takes me a long time to accumulate them. I have one 10"x10" piece made with the threads but have yet to actually use it. I save mine in a 32 oz Mason jar and my second one is now about 3/4 full. I'm planning on making some of travel/make up bags for next Christmas and using the threads to make initials for the bags....of course we'll have to see if I actually follow thru on that....

Thanks for the site listing Judy, I'm going to go check it out!! I'm like you though, I can't do anything else if I'm paper piecing...I always mess it up if I try to do something else too-like watch tv.

That husky is really cute :).

I looked at the rest of your photos too, and saw the hungry animal alphabet quilt. I used that same panel in one I made, the panel was sooo cute, I cut mine up and made bigger sashing though.

I just have to ask how do you make things from thread clippings?

Susie,
Lyn (esrun3) knows how to make a neat thread catcher.. I bet she has the pattern.. She sent me a really neat one in that Scavenger or swap or whatever last year..It is great and It lives on the edge of the table between my serger and my coverstitch machine..What amazes me about this one is it stays open and in place and is always ready to receive threads and I just love it because I don't have to stop and hold it open or anything.. It is made perfectly to stand open and ready all the time..

Libby, I'm so glad you are still liking your thread catcher!

I do have a pattern but it is currently packed away "somewhere"! I'm in the middle of moving and I couldn't find my machine right now if I had to let alone other stuff! I think it one of the "big 3" patterns. I need to make a couple more one of these days for me-I have one and love it but I also use it for trash when I'm making cards or other crafts.
