I just bought a 270D about 4 weeks ago and began practicing with the included designs. I then recently ordered an embroidery card (OESD), allegedly formatted for my machine. When I tried to use the card, my machine indicated "Cannot use this card on this machine". So, I figured it was not formatted correctly. Then, I ordered a magic box elite in hopes to format correctly and use on my machine. But, when I inserted the card it read "Cannot use this card on this machine". I am assuming that this is user error and not the machine, but I am not sure! Can anyone help me?

Check the OESD website. They have a wonderful customer service department. Bernina at one time sold machines that take the PES format so I think that they should have sent you a card that will work. I would never hesitate to check with them. Their home emboridery site is at embroideryonline.com

Thanks for the info! I just sent an email to their tech support. I am trying to figure out if my machine is the problem (it is refurbished) or if it is operator error. Since I am new to all of this I am going with operator error. I am guessing that since the machine is trying to read the card it is probably working correctly. Any thoughts on that?

I don't know much specifically about your machine. Perhaps Tom, or one of the other tech, or another 270 machine owner can help.

I've just used OESD a lot and know that they back their products well.

I, like most service techs won't work on that machine so I'm not sure but it seems like the 270D takes something different from the standard Brother PES Make sure you are ordering the proper format. .
Have fun or don't do it, Tom

Is it possible that the design disk you purchased contains designs that are larger than your 4x4 stitch field? I've read that some users get similar messages when trying to use larger designs than their machine can accomodate.

I checked the size of all of the designs and they are all smaller than the 4x4 hoop. I called AllBrands (where I purchased the machine) and that too has been a nightmare. The return department is such a hassle. You allegedly cannot speak to a live person in returns and it takes 3-5 days to get any feedback about how to return an item. My biggest issue is that the embroidery department told me that there is most likely something wrong with the computer in the machine and it needs to be returned. Then, you don't hear anything for days. In the meantime, I have money tied up in something that doesn't work (not by my issue but theirs) and they want to charge me a restocking fee and charge me for the original shipping. I am so frustrated....Anyway, I was thinking of upgrading to the Brother PE700. Does anyone have any thoughts on that. I don't want to spend a lot of money, as this is my first machine. Thanks for all the feedback!

I wouldn't pretend to know much about a Brother machine but the PE 700, if that is the embroidery only machine looks like a really good buy to me. It does have the 5X7 stitch area and I believe that you'll probably be buying them from a real brick and motar store which will be so much easier for you to deal with. Also, they should give you some basic lessons on how to use the machine.

The return department is such a hassle.

lazyolazys, Good luck with this situation. I do feel your pain as I have been there, done that with them; learned my lesson really fast!

I don't have anything to offer regarding the PE-700 except like Paroper said, it is an embroidery only machine. There have been no reviews about this machine added to pattern review yet either; I have looked as I am also considering it as my next purchase.

Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions! They picked up the 270D machine on Friday and I will be ordering my new machine tomorrow. I am probably going to buy the PE700, so we'll see how it goes. On a budget, there are not that many choices. Anyway, thanks again!

Hello Lazyolazys,

I noticed your stiuation and was wondering if you found a solution. I recently purchased the 270D and am thinking about getting either the Magic Box Elite or the Vikant Ultimate box. So far I have noticed that allbrands.com usually have the best price but I don't want to buy it unless it works. And if they have poor customer service/support then maybe I should buy from somebody else. Just interested in an update on what you have found.

Hello! Back again after a few days. I did come up with a solution...Allbrands said it was the computer in the machine that would not read the cards. I was having such a terrible time talking with someone that knew something, I just resorted to calling the store location in New Orleans. I talked with a store manager and let her know my frustration and she transfered me directly to returns and I finally spoke with a person. Because the machine was broken, there was no restocking fee and payment due for shipping. After I talked with someone and made several complaints in the meantime, things went pretty well from there. I ended up exchanging the machine for a PE700 and I am pretty happy with it (just learning the ropes and have had a few successes and a few mishaps). Even though I do not like AllBrands return department or policies, they do have the best prices and very fast delivery. I would not recommend purchasing a reconditioned machine. Buy a new one! It is worth the few extra dollars and no headaches involved! I do love the magic box! It is very easy to use. I haven't had a chance to use it with my new machine but I am very happy with that purchase. Did you end up getting one?
