Now I had other sewing plans for the weekend but so often when dh has a project in mind I become a part of it and my plans just fade away....(sigh)

This time it was a deep sea fishing tackle bag that he was determined to make. He'd bought some appropriate heavy duty nylon earlier in the week. He'd made something similar years ago and I was quite impressed. Well, he's very visual (like most men) and I'm not. He drew pictures and told me exactly what he wanted it to look like and before I knew it he was up in my sewing/computer room asking me how to thread my machine.

After I had showed him that he said, oh, don't worry, I can do all the rest myself so I started doing something else. That's when the questions started. :nervous: One after the other and before I knew it I was the one behind the machine and he was telling me what he wanted.

This "bag" is about 8 1/2" x 10" and 11 " high. It incorporated pieces of wood (like baseboards) along the top and in the lid. There's plastic canvas in the sides. It holds plastic tubes from which the lures are hung by the hooks. I put an embroidery of a yellowfin fish and our last name on the top and the whole bag is made from sport nylon.

Made from scratch and he's quite pleased with it. He kept saying "It's only a fishing bag." each time I wasn't happy with the way a seam came together, or something else wasn't up to standard in my opinion. I told him I'll take credit for the embroidery but he can have all the other credit! :dave:

Just thought I'd share this little story of working together. We actually enjoyed it and between us came up with a pretty good finished project.

The next day I was all set to go back to my original project and sure enough here he comes again. "Sit down, let's talk about the way we're going to do the siding and windows." :bang: This time I said, nope, I'm working on my project today. There's plenty of time to discuss that! :whacky:

Good for you, Lennie! A husband and wife working together at the sewing machine is a rare and special treat. I think it's great that he was going to do it all himself but out of love you did it for him  . Do you have any photos?

Now that you mention it, Tara........

I have figured out how to get pictures into Photobucket but I haven't figured out how to get them from there to here. Do you know? I'll post a pic of the fishing bag if I can just figure it out.

I'm glad you saw in my post that I really didn't mind (and actually enjoyed) working with dh.

Here finally are pics of the bag. The design was stolen from Shimano, Lyn. If your ds fishes much I bet he's seen one like it. Dh said they only cost around $40. When I heard that I asked him why we're making one???:nc: Before the thing was designed and the two of us got it together it would have been cheaper timewise, etc. to just buy one.

But oh well, we had quality time together and that's what counts.

I am truly amazed, both at the pictures, and at the fact that you could do that together and survive it! We are both too bull headed to do a project like that together. We've done some reno's in the house, but I have to walk away when the language starts getting too hard on my ears. We did do a sewing project together last fall, but he had the job of sewing seams together, and I did everything else, and he used the old machine. I don't think I'd let him at my Pfaff, nor my scissors, or my iron, or my embroidery machine, or my..etc.. Lennie, hat's off to you for a job well done!!

Oh Laura, I too am profoundly amazed. And not at the pics! lol lol lol :re:

I know exactly what you're talking about. We remodeled just about everything about 3 years ago. We had a blue haze over our house for months! :whacky:

When I was younger I used to take it personally but now I just walk away and refuse to deal with his ranting and raving. It's not usually directed at me but all the same........I have also in the past been referred to as "useless as tits on a bull" when I'm not quite understanding some facet of construction or not quite strong enough to lift something!

Well, this project was actually fun. I think dh honestly appreciated that I was taking the time for him. It was really teamwork. I sat at the machine regulating the speed and making suggestions (corners, etc.) and he was holding and guiding the fabric. Makes me wish I always had four hands while sewing!

But rest assured Laura, I feel your pain! :re:

Way to go, Lennie - that's an awesome bag!!
Thank goodness my dh isn't home because if he saw this he'd be after me for weeks to do one for him. I'D be the one who'd have to go out and get all the stuff though!!
Those tubes are a great idea for the lures.
The closest I come to fishing is laying out on the boat trying to "catch" a tan (groan!) - lol.

I'm like you Maureen, I just feel sorry for the fish........

Glad he's got his hobby though. Because of the money he spends on fishing he totally encourages any expenses I have with sewing. I mean, he tries to talk me into buying expensive machines I don't even want yet. I guess I could have bigger problems.......:bluewink:

Oh, I didn't mention that the bottom of the bag is nylon netting so it all drains very nicely.

He's got a 10 day trip out at sea coming up the end of June into July. I'll be curious to see how this bag holds up.

My dh and I have come to a system of working when we collaborate on a project. I'm the thinker and he's the doer (building that is, not sewing). For several years we bickered our way through building and renos until one day I came home to find one of the funniest sights I've ever seen. You've all heard of painting yourself into a corner - well he came pretty close.

He was replacing decking boards on our then back patio. The house was on the side of a hill so most of the patio was about 10 foot (or more) off the ground with just framework under it. Instead of taking the boards off the far end and walking across the still solid deck to dispose of the discards for some reason he started on the near end and had to balance, hop and wobble across the beams to get to the next lot for removal and then back again to terra firma.

Ever since we talk through each project and put it on paper so I can visualise the order and process of the steps. I'm not very skilled with hammer and nails or drills etc. and he is but I can see the steps all the way through (kind of like pattern construction) and he can only see the next step or two.

All fights finished - and it only took about 8 years of marriage. We've since done many, many building projects together. He does stay right away from the sewing machine though. Thank goodness. Except when he cleans and oils it for me - not often now that he knows I can do it myself.

Great bag Lennie! Yes, for $40 I'll buy him one if he wants one!! Some things are worth the money-but I'd be making it on my own-you had "help" LOL.. It was good for both of you and you certainly sound like you enjoyed it. The bag came out wonderful!!

Hey Lyn ~

Kevin does lots of "rent a husband" type things for single female friends we have. Just let me know. I'll send him over.

Come to think of it, he'll be in the Phoenix area the end of the month for a few days helping his dd move. :bg: Really!

Glad you like it and yes, I'd recommend just buying one.
