We're giving our middle daughter a surprise party for her 16th birhtday this Friday night. Does anyone have any ideas for teen approved party games we could play?

She's mentioned playing something called Mafia at other parties but I have no idea what that is. I thought about doing a retro birthday and make them play kid games like musical chairs and pop the balloon. Do you think that would go over or be 'stupid...duh!'

I'm open to all ideas.

When mine had hers we played muical games. Its where every one brings a game and they start it and you give them 10 min. on each one then when the 10 min are up each group moves on to the next game and picks up where that group left off.Board games work best and its great for a simi-to big crowd,it keeps them moving. They loved it and that was two years ago so I would think it should still work today.

I think they would love the kids games as long as you "modified" them for teenagers. Pass the parcel with cool items instead of childish party favours. Hip music instead of nursery rhymes for musical chairs and statues. Pin the earrings (or even bellybutton ring) on the girl. You might need to loosen them up a bit first (especially if any of them are a bit too self conscious or stuck up). The other thing is to provide plenty of loot (party favours) they will really enjoy. Who doesn't enjoy coming away from a party with a prize!

Ideas: nail polish, temporary tatoos, hair accessories, mini CDs, stick on body jewellery...

Shrinking Islands is a fun one with teens as well - - sheets of newspaper on the floor , play music and all have to walk around them while you tear the paper in half , when the music stops - the tide has come in a bit. Keep going until someone falls over and then start removing the island until there is only one player left standing..

"Are you there Moriety?" is fun - two players and the rest watch and laugh . Two people are blindfolded and lay down on the floor side by side with their closest hands tied together - each is given a rolled up newspaper. One is Holmes, the other Moriety. Holmes has to say "Are you there Moriety?" and "Moriety has to reply "Yes" so that they an hear where the other one is - then they beat the crap out of each other. You are allowed to wiggle out of the way, but of course are still tied together soi more often tan not there is a lot of frantic floor bashing that goes on while everyone is in hysterics. Use a timer.

Don't forget - party themed cake(eg My Little Pony) from when she was younger and hats and blower, party poppers etc. When my daughter was 19 she was at Uni for her first birthday away from home and I sent her some hats, blowers, a birthday banner, make you own fairy cakes, iced biscuits, and so on for an 8 year olds party - she loved it and so did all her mates.

Shrinking Islands is a fun one - we played that at a mixed party (7-12 years old) recently. Everyone had fun and I think the adults would have liked to join in!

This would be a popular game if some "nice boys" were there too. Of course this might be a good reason to avoid playing it. :bg:

My kids LOVE mafia. It does not matter if you do not know how to play. All you need is a deck of cards. However it is not an ice breaker type game. Do the kids all predominatley know each other already? If they do then you probably don't need to plan too much. they enjoy just socializing. Then you can suggest mafia - but, and I speak from experience, it is an addictive game and they may never leave! Mine also like playing Apples to Apples which is a board game and they can get totally silly with it. But I think about 10 people is the max for it. If the weather is nice a football is great too. The guys love showing off for the girls. Good luck!!

I think it is a great idea In fact my DD organised her own 16 party and they did play kids party games. They played newspaper fashion - divided into groups 4-5 and they had to come up with a newspaper outfit within a set time frame.Greta fun and lots of laughing and very swanky models I am not sure what this one is called but you need a block of chocolate, cutlery and bulky coat, gloves hat and scarf and a dice each person takes turn to roll - on getting a six the person must dress up in the clothes then using a knife and fork cut only a square of chocolate, get it onto the fork, meanwhile the dice keeps rolling. usually not much chocolate gets eaten and for hygiene reasons we gave everyone their own fork.
I stopped planning my DD parties after 13yr - she desperately wanted to have parties so I gave her a budget (a very lean one) - she organised great get togethers on this limited budget in fact mums of her firends followed suit they thought it was a great idea and certainly reduced the "mum" stress. I was delegated some chores tho like heating food and making the chocolate cake:bday:

I have not heard of shrinking islands or the chocolate game before.

I don't understand quite how to play the shrinking island game so I'll google it and see what I come up with. I don't have time to get back online today after this because I have to go shopping for the party then pick up the kids by noon. Our elementary principal died Wednesday evening from a long bout with cancer and school is letting out early today for the funeral. (My kids go to a K-12 school) This unexpected happening on party day has thrown my timeline off a bit but no problem...I just have to get everything done and hidden this morning.

My daughter's friends are a very close bunch of girls and guys so playing mafia is probably going to be the choice. We also bought the old Creature from the Black Lagoon movies so they can watch those also. And I'll find out more about that shrinking island game...

Thanks again everyone!
