I picked up the Simplicity Daisy Kingdom 3905 pattern in size AA 3,4,5,6 http://www.simplicity.com/index.cfm?crit=1065&page=thumbnailCustom.cfm&id=1090&StartRow=1 It is a halter top dress with a bolero jacket. I have no idea what to do about sizing. I haven't made anything from a pattern for my dd in a very long time. I just measured her and compared it to the pattern envelope. she ranges from a size 3 or 4 in some measurements and a size 7 in others My pattern only goes to size 6. chest is 23" ~ which is size 4 waist 23" ~ size 7 hips 23" ~ between size 3 and 4 back-neck to waist is 11" ~ size 6 or 7 approx. height 39.5" ~ between size 3 and 4 She has a bit of a belly and a long torso. I plan on finding some spring fabric and making it her Easter dress or maybe for her 4th birthday in May. Any ideas on how to make this pattern fit her? any help will be majorly appreciated. Wendy

What about taking a top or something that you like how it fits and compare that to the pattern tissue? I find sizing for kids a bit odd (usually too big for mine) and use the eyeball method a lot (and cut nice wide side seams for letting out etc) Sounds like she is long waisted and most kids have the same chest and waist measurement. So that discrepancy in sizing sounds weird to me. have fun! Jeanette

Do I understand right that the fabric you're going to need for this is pre-shirred (Daisy Kingdom fabric with elastic sewn in already), which is what forms the fitted bodice. That allows all kinds of give around her form. Looking at the back of your pattern, the bodice stops just above the natural waist, and then below that is the gathered skirt, so that the waist measurement (and hips too) become less important. I would see how far down this particular bodice goes on her midsection, and then measure _there_. I have a hunch she's going to fall around a size 4 or 5. If so, you could cut it out for a 5 and then take it in just a bit at the top so it's not baggy in the chest.

I would start with a size 4(for the top). Use tracing paper to keep the pattern intact. Redraw the cutting lines gently and gradually from size 4 to size 6 from chest area to waist(to give more room at the waist and a longer back to neck measurement. I would cut the size 6 for the skirt part of the pattern, but shorten it to the size 4 or 5 hemline. Because of the fullness of the skirt, I don't think the hip measurement is all that important. Then I would make a quick mock-up to ensure it looks and fits right. Take care,

Sooooo if you look at your measurments, she is basically a long 4...so I would cut size 4 for most of the sizing and size 6 for length (if it has a waistline..if not, I wouldn't worry about it). Since she is overall a size 4, if it has a waistline, you may be able to shorten the skirt to a size 4 skirt...I'd do some "holding" and estimating (pattern against the child). Now, that should take care of just about everything except the waistline. You are looking at a 3 size pattern (I think?) if so, just slope that pattern out to at least a size 6 waistline. You can measure the pattern at the waistline and subtract the seam allowances. On a fitted garment where there might not be anything but a slip underneath, I usually allow 1/2 inch for child or adult. If it is more, in a child's garment, I add elastic to the back (can hide a multitude of sins). If the waist measurement at size 6 does not at least allow 1/2 of ease, I would go ahead and add a little more at the waist. If there is gathering in the skirt, I would use a size 6 skit width to match the size 6 (or more) waist...and a size 4 length (if you need it that short). At this age, I might be inclined to leave seam allowance to run elastic (that is where I put it...between the seam allowances and the edge) because she will be slimming down pretty quick. You could either run some light elastic that could be tightened at the side seam later or just leave trenching to add elastic for a future date. I hope this isn't too confusing. If you were making a pair of shorts, I would do a size 4 hips chest with a size 6 or 7 waist in both the shorts and top and lengthen the top. pam

This is my favorite pattern!! I have made several of them. It is easily altered. Use the top piece that fits your daughter in length - don't worry too much about width b/c you can adjust that with the amount of shirring or elastic that you use. There is some gathering on the skirt portions that you can play around with to get a good fit. So I usually - on this pattern - go with the length that I desire and increase or decrease the amount of gathering. I think you will love this pattern once you get the first one down. |

Thank you everyone for the tips!! I think I'd be safest to try it with some muslin or something first to try and find the best solution. I'm going to print this all out to refer back to when I'm trying it out!! my2girlies, I'm so happy to hear that someone else has made this pattern. I found it in the fabric shop the other day. Someone had made a sample and had it hanging. It was soo cute. I'd love to see some pictures of the ones you made!!! Oh, one more question. I was thinking of eliminating the slip part and just having the top skirt and the underskirt. Do you think that would work?? Wendy

I will have to look to see if I have any pics of that particular pattern. I'm sure you could eliminate the underskirt, but I would make the top skirt the length that the under skirt would have been. With it that full it might look a little odd being the shorter length. The skirt options are really endless. One on that I made I made the top skirt out of vertical strips of 4 different materials. On another I used bias tape and ribbon to cinch up the top skirt on each side of the front and appliqued on the bottom skirt to where it peeked through. Just have fun with it!! I have never used the actual Dk material for it and have never made the little jacket, either. |

Thanks! yes, I would keep the top two skirts, but the pattern also calls for a slip/lining, that's the one I want to eliminate. Your ideas sound so cute! I love the idea for the vertical strips! I might even look into cinching up the top skirt too, that sounds cute! If you find any pics I'd love to see them! Wendy

OOps - I misunderstood what you were saying. I have never put in the slip/lining. So yes you can definately avoid it. In fact I had forgotten that it had that layer since I have never used it. Let us know how it turns out!! Also if you like that one pattern 4201 is also fun with just a different top. From 3/16 - 3/18 Hancock's will have simplicity patterns for $1.99. |

cool! Glad to hear it will still go together fine without the slip! That other pattern looks cute too!! I just got back from Hancock's I found some fabric to make the dress. The fabric is pretty bright, so probably not a good Easter dress LOL! It will be her birthday dress which gives me more time to work on it
