This block swap I hope is going to be different from any other you may have ever done before because we are going to use a piece of art as our inspiration for making our blocks.

Check out the painting Hot Still-scape for 6 colors by Stuart Davis (1940). This is the best online image I have come across, but maybe you have an old art history book or you can check it out at the library.

http://www.art.com/asp/sp-asp/_/PD--10216208/SP--A/IGID--1148867/Hot_StillScape_for_Six_Colors_7th_Avenue_Style_194 0.htm?sOrig=CRT&sOrigId=188&ui=6DF0909A54CF44E0834765E86A53402C

The challenge is to make a 10 ½” unfinished block limited to solid color fabric of the six colors used by Davis. The block can be two colors, but the limit is six. The key is creativity. You can use any method (piecing, appliqué) you wish, but only the six colors.

The fabrics to be used are:

Kona Kaufman Cardinal
Kona Kaufman Daffodil
Kona Kaufman Amber
Kona Kaufman Black
Kona Kaufman Snow
Kona Kaufman Peacock

Fabric is available at www.fabricshack.com for 3.99 per yard. You can purchase your fabric where ever you wish, but I found this to be the best deal on the internet. Just make sure the color matches those listed above. Kona Cotton is fabulous; the object is consistency with just having six colors in this quilt. Buy enough fabric to make 16 blocks.

Guidelines:
1. Blocks are to be 10 ½” square unfinished (10” finished).

2. Only the fabrics listed above are to be used. Remember….. you could use just the white and black or any combination of the colors - up to the six listed. Don’t participate if you can’t follow this rule; there is surely to be another swap that will tickle your fancy in the future.

3. Prewash all fabrics.

4. Any technique for making your block is acceptable. The test is this: would you like to receive this block in the mail??? Don't be afraid to challenge yourself, but do a block that will reflect your best work. Be sure to measure and send 1 0 1/2 unfinished blocks.

5. Sign-ups will close when 16 participants have signed up or by May 22 (whichever comes first). Blocks will be due to me no later than August 20. Let me repeat that, August 20 is deadline for me to have your blocks. I will repackage all blocks and remail so everyone can receive their blocks by September 1, 2007.

7. PM me with your screen name, full name, address, phone number if you plan on participating.

8. If there are 16 participants you will need to mail me 15 blocks in a SASE envelope (not sealed). You can take this to your post office to get the correct postage and then place it in another envelope addressed to me. I will give you my address when you PM me. Tyvek envelopes work well as they are waterproof and lightweight.

9. Do NOT SIGN YOUR BLOCK.

This is a Hot block swap.......... are you Hot enough to accept the challenge?

Participants:
1. Bama
2. Jeke
3. Hogmami
4. SewHappie
5. Me
6. Pudge99
7. techalum
8. Glea (through Jeke)
9. siwian
10. Magot
11. Adva P.

This will be totally different than any kind of quilt I've ever made, but my 15yo thinks it will be so cool that I have to sign up. :bg: She's already given me a block idea.

Bama.... I've got you on the list.... Thank you brave spirit for jumping (or thank your daughter for pushing you) into this challenge!

I thought I would explain to everyone how I came up with this swap. The other day I was working at the LQS and in the back of my mind I was thinking about a new swap that everyone would find interesting. I also bought up quite a few yards of reproduction fabric that went on the sale table :bg: Ohhhhhh...... I was swimming in ideas.......

(Have many of you seen the new lines of fabric coming in, or the color waves in the lines of fabric that aren't doing reproductions. My daughters love Urban Outfitters and Anthroplogie and the color lines are a bit 40/50's turquois blue, orange, yellow with neutrals in bold designs. My oldest daughter is moving into a new apartment and I keep emailing her fabric swatches so I can make curtains and mail them to her.....)

Yesterday morning I sat down at the computer and had an entire friendship block swap written up with the history of Manifest Destiny. The scenario was a young woman from the eastern seaboard who was always close to home, her sisters and family. She was just told by her strapping young husband they were moving "out west." I'm starting to digress here, but I had a few pages written with the block pattern, fabrics, information on signing your blocks, etc. And then.................... I hit the back arrow to check a url I had posted..... and *pouff* my entire post was lost.

:bang:

When I had a chance to sit back at the computer yesterday evening, my eyes caught a glimpse of Stuart Davis' painting. Wow.... What a neat painting and wouldn't that make a great contemporary piece with quilt blocks? The possibilities are ENDLESS. Then I thought back to the fabric lines like Free Spirit and Michael Miller and the "new colorways" and thought this fit in so perfectly.

You could take a traditional block (anyone that you like making)..... but, let's say.... Jacob's ladder.... and change the coloring and suddenly the traditional is contemporary. You can isolate an area of the painting and translate it into a block. There are so many little geometic shapes within the painting that any kind of design goes.

Now, I am so glad that I accidently hit the back arrow!

Buy your fabric where ever you want, but stick with those colors. I know Kona goes at some places for over 5 up to 6.10 a yard, so I posted the URL for the online source because I have shopped there before, they offer fast service and the prices are extremely reasonable.

So as I said before, this is a different kind of block challenge - but it should be really HOT and exciting when finished.

Off for more :coffee2:

I am in for this one. I went online, saw the picture, looked at the fabric at fabricshack and had colorful dreams last night of quilt blocks :bg: Between that and the quilt show I had gone to for two nights in a row, what else WOULD I be dreaming about.

My cousin was so excited about the red and white swap that she is interested in doing this too. I'll have to get with her and have her become a SWN member so she can do this.

Must be off - Happy Friday to everyone.

Jay, I've got you on the list...

Gina... you keep thinking... Think of it this way.... it is only March, and you don't need to have the blocks finished until the end of August - that is FIVE WHOLE months of time to get fabric, decide on a pattern and still leave you lots of time to make the blocks.

In American Art: A Cultural History by David Bjelajac, Bjelajac talks about Davis' painting coming from the influence of American Jazz - "hot rhythms" in conjunction with drawing upon the Cubist tradition - Davis frequented New York nightclubs . "Jazz musicians who are 'hot' are so thoroughly absorbed by their art that they freely experiment with melodies and rthythms, spontanceously expressing intense feelings. Within his jigsaw puzzle of hot - and cool - colored shapes, Davis creates doodling, twisting lines and shapes that suggest improvisation jazz techniques... Davis created an abstract art that was primarily inspired by the urban-industrial environment of street signs, traffic, commerical advertising, cafes, clubs, radio, and other forms of mass communication." (pg 325-327).

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh, isn't that what we do with our sewing? We get thoroughly absorbed ..... express intense feelings (about all kinds of topics  ) and freely experiment with all kinds of threads, fabrics, and sewing techniques.

Ok,

Put me on the maybe list too.

I'm going to have to think about this.

I will definitely decide by mid April.

If I join I have to wash my fabrics. Hmmmm that may be a rule breaker (just kidding I used to wash just haven't in the last couple years)

I ordered a piece of all the six colors from Fabric Shack and I received them in the mail today. Ohhhhhhhhh.....I love these colors

I have my pattern choice selected and I just need to decide how I am going to color the block.

Are there any of you out there who might be interested in the swap, but just aren't sure of what we're doing?

I don't want to scare anyone out there, because it is a block swap that is meant to be a challenge and yet creative. Just about anything will work!

Jan, the sign-ups end in May so there is plenty of time. I will be sure to email you to let you know if there is a sudden crazed onslaught of quilters :re:

I worked at the LQS three days last week. It amazes me how many individuals lack the confidence to pick the colors they like and to just experiment. For example: one woman carried around a book that was about four years old wanting the fabric to match the fabric in the book exactly. No, not just similiar color values, but the exact print. I tried to explain that there are few lines of fabric that are reprinted for that length of time (Fossil Ferns is an exception to the rule as that is about 10 years now for Benertex).

I was able to pull out three fabrics and because I couldn't match the last fabric she went home quite sullen; it certainly wasn't because I didn't try and not because the shop didn't have enough variety.

Then, you will get someone who sees a store sample and again, they want the same prints (no deviations).

I was beginning to feel that creativity was taking a back seat to someone worrying about "making a mistake and not having it look right." [that's an exact quote]

The saving grace was a woman that came in and just picked the colors because they spoke to her. Okay now, she wasn't nuts.......she was just uninhibited - and you could tell she just loved life; she smiled often and laughed freely.

So, back to the block swap........ like I had said previously, if there are any of you that are just not sure, just pm me and we can talk about it.

Try just isolating a portion of the painting and think of how you could interpret it with fabric. Maybe isolate a circle or section of rectangles. Or, just play around with the colors.

When I opened my package of fabric today, even my husband salivated over the colors. They are bright, bold and full of life.

Hey there you Hot Quilters!

I received a pm about the block swap, and I thought I would write a note in general to everyone rather than just to one quilter about the swap; hoping this will clarify any questions. I think more of you may have questions about not being sure where to start.

In essence, any block can be made for the swap. The idea is you find your inspiration from the Stuart Davis painting. The colors in Davis' palette will be the foundation of the swap.

For example, let's take a Jacob's Ladder block. Rather than a traditional coloration, you could make all the pieces different colors, or make it just a black and white block with one little square a color.......
Do you see how there are infinite possibilities with one block?

I was thinking of doing the Chinese Puzzle block as it tends to look like circles....... and then I was thinking of appliqueing circles onto strip pieced blocks...... and then I decided I'm going to think about it some more.

I still love the colors.

How is everyone else doing? Have you been able to come up with some possibilities for your block? Did anyone order the fabric? Are you pleased with the fabric?

Happy Spring everyone!

ps. Jay, is your girlfriend going to be joining us?

I'm making one more change to the swap............sorry, but it is early and I've dreamed about this for two days now...

Since Stuart Davis' art was responding to his environment, I think ours should also be a reflection of our society today. In this way I don't think we should sign our blocks with the name, state, etc., but rather we should just sign our blocks with our screen name. Many of us never address one another in a manner other than the identity we have created for ourselves on this forum and our location is cyberspace. I hope all of you are receptive of this change, but we can always put other details on a label if you feel so inclined.

Thanks to everyone who is getting excited about our little creative adventure and offering to double up on the blocks. We still have lots of time for sign-ups, so maybe a few more will join in on our hot block madness :) However, if we don't get the numbers for a nice project, sure, anyone that wants to double may do so/sew.

If you go to the www.fabricshack.com site
do a catalog keyword search for "Kona Cotton daffodil" and the fabric pops up. They still have the daffodil, black, snow and peacock. The cardinal and amber are out of stock? Or else you can check another site for them. Hope this helps Carolyn.

Naomi....if two of us choose the same pattern, what are going to be the chances of using the same coloration? I think it is going to be so much fun being suprised as to how we select what colors to use and how much or how little, or if we just stick to two colors.

I'm not saying you have to keep it a secret from anyone because if you want to talk about what you're doing, that is fine with me.

These are going to be so much fun to put together!

Carolyn, glad you found the fabric, I think I'm going to write them about the amber and cardinal to see if they are getting more.

Of course that would be okay Naomi!!!!!! Furthermore, you don't even have to get that literal in the translation, but you could take your favorite block and see how you could color it to replicate a section.

Naomi - when you were talking about just translating a small section of the painting in your block, it reminded me of a quilt that was made by the Manhattan Quilt Guild in the early 90's. I knew a member of the guild and they were a small group of 16 - mainly artists doing art quilts.

A photograph of the vine quilt by Susan McCord (her quilts are at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan) was taken and cut into 16 equal sections. Each guild member had that section of the quilt to translate into their method of expertise. For example, one woman specialized in crazy quilting and beading, so her section contained those. One quilter showed the vine and what it looked like in the winter. My friend, John, put Susan under the magnifying glass and his section replicated her quilt exactly except for the magnifying glass and a big round section that was blown up.

The 16 quilts were then assembled and attached (just for purpose of display) onto a background with sleeve. The small quilts were strong enough to stand on their own, but when assembled back together they formed a spectacular piece - Susan would have been thrilled.

I'm trying to think of the name of the piece and I believe it was Susan at the Palladium (if memory is still working). I knew it traveled to a few venues - Houston displayed many of their group challenges such as Yard Works.

I've done this method in my kids classrooms when they were little - once with a Patricia Polocco illustration (she was coming for an author visit). We learned then that two children were color blind, but the pieces still worked out beautifully.

So in the future, keep this in mind if all of you are interested in doing a small quilt.

Just a note on Patty's post. I work at "The Henry Ford" (I work in the historic village area not the museum) and Susan McCord's quilts are not on display. They're kept back in the Textile Archives. They were out on display for a short time a couple of years ago though. It is kind of cool to see interest beyond the area. And of course they printed the book about the quilt collection, I have it upstairs somewhere.

When is the deadline for signing up for this swap. I need to know how many blocks to determine how much fabric. Of course if Gina swaps this fabric that could change things.

Have a great day all,

May 22nd is the deadline for signing up for the swap; so far we have 8 innovative, creative people stepping up to the challenge.

This is not your uptight quilter's swap...it's for those who are "hip." :re: Jack Kerouac possibly?

Donna, wow, really exciting that you are so close to the collection. Rather than saying the quilts are at the Ford Museum, I should have stated they are housed at the facility  Susan McCord...the ultimate scrap quilter....my hero!

Picking up on a previous comment - we sign the blocks? Is that on the front? Would that not spoil the overall design? I am still toying with this one I have to admit. Personally I love the idea of a quilt inspired by a piece of Art but would find peoples names all over the front distracting.

How does everyone feel about signing their blocks? I like signature blocks, so to me, it doesn't matter, but I would really like the group to discuss how they perceive the finished blocks and whether they would just rather have a label with everyone's name on it?

Personally I think the signatures would be neat if they could be incorporated into the design or very small and inconspicuous.
I do agree that the names signed like on most signature blocks that I have seen would distract from the over all look of the quilt.

I don't think I would want them signed unless they were pretty inconspicuous either. I'm not a big fan of signature quilts myself. But I see no problem signing some and not all. That would work for me.

I'm really tired so I'm probably not making a lot of sense. Just started back to work after 3.5 mos off and my brain hasn't adjusted yet. The joys of seasonal work.

I would rather have a label with our Screen names and block name. I think having different size names all over would take away from the whole thing.

How is everyone doing? How about finding the fabric that you want for your blocks?

Remember, your block can be a traditional block that is given a fresh look just by how you decide to color the pieces. Have fun experimenting by taking one block and taking the six colors and trying to come up with as many different variations as you can for the block.

It is a fun activity for when the body is tired from working yet your mind is restless.

I'm in!! I have been playing with a block since I read this post in March. I finally decided I can do this. I may have to get my dad to help me (he quilts with the group at our church). I did have a "duh" moment last night. I was only looking at one section of the block I want to make. I couldn't figure out how it was supposed to convey the idea in that one block. Now I know-there is more to it than I was looking at. It really opens up more possibilities.

Now Jan, WHAT IT......just WHAT if.....we purchased the fabric and you said what colors you want, and I just send it over to you? I'm thinking around 3 yards total for the blocks we need. What do you think?

Me too - I am thinking cardinal and peacock as main colours with accents of snow. So the majority of the block would be the red and the blue - how would that work out for yardage? If you could buy it for me I can send you a cheque. What a splendid idea - I am quite excited by this project.

I'm thinking a yard of each? More than enough to do the blocks, but enough extra to use when you put your blocks together........

Just wanted to tell you that I will mail you my fabric and I will order more. 1 yard of each is going to be plenty. I plugged it into a fabric calculator for 12 blocks of three colors in equal amounts and it came out to 3/8 yard of each.

Okay, I have a question about the fabric. I have found the Kona fabric at two different locations. Both where labled Kauffman Kona Cotton. BUT one feels like a whole different quality of fabric than the other one. Does Kona come in different fabric weave weighs?

Wow...good question Naomi. I have no idea if they come in different weights.

However, I will call around to the LQS and ask them about Kona and see if they can check a catalog like United Notions and find an answer to this question.

The big question is not the weight so much, but at the quilt shops you went to, were you able to locate the right colors? I know my LQS didn't carry the colors that I wanted.

I ordered mine from Hancock's of Paducah. It feels good to me but I don't quilt much. They had all the colors. With Shipping and Handling, for me, it was about $5.14 a yard. I ordered 1 yard of each color. (I haven't SET my block yet. ) I ordered it on Sunday, recieved shipping confirmation on Tuesday, and received the fabric on Thursday. I used standard shipping option.

Fabric arrived today...oooooooo I am salivating.

I have about 6 designs sketched out - not translated into blocks but inspired by the shapes and patterns in the painting. I am using the painting itself as my desktop so that I can see things out of the corner of my eye and let them mull for a while. One of these designs will come floating to the top and sit in the forefront of my mind...

When we have the sign ups completed then we will know how many blocks to make, Yes? 10 1/2 " finished size to you by August 20th.

Post pictures guys and gals of your finished top when you put it together - the creativity doesn't end with the block!

I understand we are to prewash the fabric prior to slice and dicing. Do folks just sling the stuff in the machine with other things of the same colour, or wash them all separately, or hand wash and iron dry or steam iron dry or what?? I've not swapped before so this is important to me to treat the fabric the same as everyone else.

Jan, I am a renegade and I sling them all into the washer and have never had any problems. HOWEVER, I haven't washed mine yet, and therefore I'm sure the cardinal is a stable die. I have to say I've never had a problem with Kona's.

Should be post a pix of our blocks when we decide what we want to do? I don't think it should all be secretive....but more of a collective energy working on a project.

We won't all have the same colour choices and things anyway - it would be a laugh if we all went for the same pattern! Should be interesting. I might get to mug up a sample or two and see how it goes in half term (starts 25th May for 1 week). Daughters are all coming back so we are going to get crowded and my sewing space will become Tony's office while Katie sleeps in the office - tricky.

Okay all you hotties.....

The swap is closed and we have our final list. Sorry I haven't been on much, but I have doggie house guests as well as my daughter home.

We met her "boyfriend" and he is just the sweetest. He left this morning to go back to Ithaca but his basset is staying for a few days until they leave for Iowa and Nebraska. Our PBGV is jealous...very jealous.

About the blocks- if you haven't decided or are having trouble coming up with a design.....remember the colors can be inspiration enough.....meaning you can take a traditional pattern and just change the colors in a manner you find exciting.

I don't want anyone to get stressed and if you are having any kind of problems with your pattern, just speak up.

I received my fabric order yesterday. I compared them with some fabrics that I bought a few years back, that I thought was Kona, but the hand of the fabric is not the same. Are your fabrics light, almost like broadcloth, or is it a little thicker/heavier than our regular cotton?
The recent ones are from Fabric Shack. The old ones are from Hancocks of Paducah.
Please let me know. Got me worried now.

Adva,

The fabric from Fabric Shack is not what I would consider a broadcloth as the hand of the fabric is firmer; kona is 100% cotton. If you got your fabric at Fabric Shack, don't worry, you've got the right weight. I have used this in several baby quilts and it works up nicely and is wonderful to quilt (even by hand).

I think fabric weights have changed over the years and I have some old solid cottons which seem heavier.

i have another question - one of the fabrics i bought was the daffodil, but it doesn't look like the photo. it looks more mustardy. Did anyone get the daffodil?

After washing the fabrics, they feel the same as my old fabrics, so I know it's the right material.

I've been playing with mine in word and have so far made 20 different combinations. I can narrow it down to 6 but then there are color combinations I haven't tried. So I guess I will take the 6 I like and change the color arrangements on them to see if I like something else. I'm having fun but I'm not getting any sewing done.

all my blocks will be similar in theme and colors, but no two are identical.
I was almost done with all the blocks when I realized that half of them were too small! and I didn't have enough fabric. So another order went out last night for more....

Wow Adva, last to sign up and the first to be close. I'm impressed.

The last few weeks have been really crazy at my house, so hopefully I'll be able to order my fabric next week. But I can probably guarantee I'll be one of the last done.

Have a great day everyone.

I am on the homeward stretch with my Asian Beauty Quilt - put the binding on today and have a bit more to do but have just run out of thread! Gah! So when I have that done and dusted I'll be starting the slicing and dicing!

Wow you hotties are really going to town on your blocks.....BRAVO!

I am sorry for not being very attentive the last few weeks. Between preparing for my daughter being home, having houseguests and now being a bit sad about her departure....I think I'm back on my regular routine now. I only see her twice a year (if we are lucky) and this part of being a mother just SUCKS! For those of you who are g'ma's I don't even want to think of how even harder it is to miss your little g'tykes.

Onward with quilting though.....I have my best inspiration from about 5 am till the time I crawl out of bed (when my husband has made the coffee). I have a few ideas about my blocks and I need to do some experimenting before I commit to my design. Maybe because it is so quiet I am able to figure out dimensions and color placement on my brain's imaginary dry erase board.

Carolyn, are you planning on making two sets of blocks, or what is going on there?

Were any of you actually going to do the two sets as we had ruminated about before?

Jan, glad to hear your Asian quilt is winding down and you're flexing your muscles for the slicing/dicing ahead of you.

Take care everyone...

Okay everyone.... I guess Carolyn is the only one doing two sets of blocks.

Just to clarifiy everything.....You will be making 13 blocks (keeping one for yourself) and mailing me 12 blocks; except Carolyn your numbers will be different. I take it everyone is doing RAOK (?) - the numbers include this block. If you don't know what this is, ask Gina because she is really good at acronyms :nah:

Does this sound right to everyone? I hope everyone understands - if you don't, I'll get out the ice tea, we'll sit under the shade of the trees in the back yard and talk about it.

Sounds right to me and I understand the acronym although I had to check my pm's to figure it out. It was a looong, hot day with over 5000 kids so my brain is pretty much mush right now. Hopefully I will be able to focus on this swap starting next week. I've been thinking on it though.

Okay, either everyone understands what is going on here or they are away and enjoying the weather.

Okay, I think I'm confused. If Carolyn is sending 2 sets of blocks shouldn't she be getting 2 from each of us?

Never mind!! It's been a long day. I didn't see Carolyn's name on the list twice. As I was reading back thru the thread I realized we only had 11 names on the 22nd. and now we have 12.

Now that I understand that, Carolyn, do you want identical pairs of blocks or something different, even if it is the same block just with a different color combination?

Carolyn, I think you should get 2 blocks from everyone. When there was talk about some/all making 2 blocks it was so there would be a total of 16 blocks. I bought enough fabric to make 16 plus blocks and I participated in the fq swap. I have been playing with 2 blocks just in case we needed to send 2. (playing with colors and designs not actuallly sewing.)

wonderful blocks!

Jeke-I was thinking the same thing. Mine will look a little ordinary next to those and the ones Magot is describing. Have you decided on a block?

I am going to try a traditional one (or two) just with different color combos. I'm not sure about the circles so will probably stick with straight lines. Although one block I'm thinking about looks like it has circles in it.

Mine look nowhere as exciting as Adva's, Siwian, but I think it is the discovery of different peoples interpretation that are going to be fun - it doesn't matter if you are dong a traditional block at all - the combinations will be fun to see.

I was very happy with the way they turned out, and was almost tempted to keep them all to myself! They would make a wonderful quilt:wink:
Am I waiting patiently for everyone to finish theirs? nope!
But I hope they will await me when I come back from my trip (July 11-Aug 30).

FINISHED?!!! I haven't even washed the fabric yet!!! I have been working on a doll for a swap on another board. I just finished it today. So now I be getting my fabric washed and ironed so I can take it with me to Drum Major Camp. I am going with my oldest DD and will have 4 days sitting in a hotel suite all by myself. I was going to put in a little inspiration for making the blocks.....but everyone is really doing great things without any encouragement.

I got out a great book at the library, Eyewitness to America edited by David Colbert. The book is a collection of diary entries, newspaper articles, etc through American historical periods of interest. What a wonderful book; I tend to like history and biographies/autobiographies, so this is just my kind of reading material.

So I thought about the swap and found an entry on page 397 everyone might enjoy regarding the sounds of jazz:

"Charlie 'Bird' Parker Makes the Scene" 1941 Kansas City by Idrees Sulieman

Alto saxophonist Parker pushed jazz toward bebop, and turned the jazz clubs of New York City's 52nd Street into a training ground for the generation of musicians that followed him. With trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, he also cut the first bop records.

"I was with the Carolina Cotton Pickers doing one-nighters for four years. We stopped in Kansas City in 1941, and I met Bird blowing every night at the Kentucky Club. They'd start at four o'clock after the other clubs closed and go, sometimes , to twelve noon.

I didn't recognize because there was an alto player we had named Porter Kilbert. So, for us, Porter was the world's best. Because he could do the same thing, too. He had a photographic memory. Play arrangements, and he could play all the solos. We heard about Charlie Parker, and finally when we got to Kansas city, everyone in the band was waiting to see what would happen. So the first night we played, Charlie Parker was there listening to Porter. So we said, "Yeah. He's getting the message."

When we finished they had this jam session, and they both were really blowing. When it was over we said, "We're still with Porter. Porter don't have nothing to worry about."

But Porter said, "Yeah, but he threw in something different, man." So we said, "It's different, yeah, but you played everything he played." And he said, "Yeah, but he thought of it first."

([B]Charlie "Bird" Parker Makes the Scene, from Swing to Bop, edited by Ira Gilter [New York: Oxford University Press, 1985]).

For those of you concerned about a traditional block...DON'T. Everything is going to work with this swap as the colors will unify the blocks.

OK the deadline for this swap is mid-August isn't it???? I'm getting nervous with someone already finished (of course she's skipping town for 6 weeks).

I have to say I was pretty happy to read Siwian's post. Because I haven't even washed my fabric either.

I did really like Adva's block's though.

Hopefully Wednesday I can have a sewing day. If not DH is away for work the following week and possibly thru the weekend after, so I should be able to get something started then. And we don't have any big vacations planned until October so I'll be around, it's just getting started :re:.

I have some ideas for blocks but haven't started on them yet. Every time I think I'm going to have a whole day to sew, somebody needs me to do something for them or take them some where. I had to take my MIL somewhere today. This was after changing sheets and doing laundry and cleaning up after kids and pets. When I got home DH wanted me to go somewhere else.
After shopping, we went out for Chinese food and guess what my fortune cookie said? "You are able to juggle many tasks." I'm glad the cookie thinks so. At least I didn't have to cook.

Finis!
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e81/Janicehodge/IMG_0180.jpg

THis is my first time of working with circles - I didn't trust myself to sew them on with the machine and so they are slip stitched in position. Slightly barmy in their appearance but then so is the original.

Maybe you will see what I mean about the cat in the hat on speed..

Now I have to post them - not sure how long that will take.

Wow..... looks like the circles are inspiring all of us!

Jan.....I've posted this in some other quilting topics, but if you have never seen this method, try it! IT IS WONDERFUL....

http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/cr_quilting_instructions/article/0,,HGTV_3302_4302936,00.html

When I saw Dale Fleming on TV doing this I had to try it. Essentially you are basting your background fabric to the fabric that will be your circle with washable glue stick. Then you go to your sewing machine and sew the seam. This is how I did my husband's baseball quilt and each baseball took about seven minutes.

http://pelkovitch.photosite.com/Album3/DSC04408.html

Each baseball has a photo reproduction of a negro league player from the 1930's that my husband had written and gotten their autograph from in the early 1990's.

Regarding postage: I had gone to the post office and the clerk told me they no longer do the slow bloat method (6-8 weeks) which was very inexpensive. It is all first class or air mail now with the new postal rates that went into effect. We're still not sure about whether the youngest will be attending Queen Mary....won't decide that until 2nd week of July when we get a final detail of $$$$$$$. OY. So, just mail the blocks any way you can (since time isn't a factor), I will make up the return envelope, etc

I can't wait to see what everyone else is coming up with. I'm probably doing a traditional with a little twist to it and I'll start making them up after I finish two store samples and a baby quilt that I'm finishing up the applique on. Oh, and then I have a small wall hanging I'm giving as a gift to my friend that needs to be finished pronto! (I work better when I have a lot of projects going and deadlines to be met.)

Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer and enjoying the things in life that make you the happiest!

If only I knew what freezer paper was Patty....

I used the method that someone posted here about making a card template and then wrapping a sandwich of foil, fabric and card before ironing it - seemed to work.

I've got your address Patty so I'll zoom them off to you when I can

It was my ability to sew a curve on the machine that I didn't trust.

Anyhow - Tony and the girls will be out for another 6-12 hours so I am about to play with some Ricky Timms inspired stuff.....

GUESS WHAT......I think I might have to send some freezer paper back to you along with your blocks.

Back in the old days....freezer paper was used for packaging food (kind of like coated butcher paper) for the freezer. One side is smooth and the other side when ironed to fabric adheres. In the states we use it for templates for applique. You can peel it off and reuse it also.

They have a stiffer version (8 1/2" x 11" sheets) that can be used in a photocopier - hence you just photocopy your pattern right onto the paper without having to trace it. It is REALLY wonderful!!! I think tracing patterns is the dud part of applique.

Have fun in your "quiet" house with Ricky......

ps. So was it your husband you were dating while you were "jail bait?" (Sorry, I guess sharing the day with Ricky was the segway into that question =8-O

um.....no, he was my brothers friend. We had all of 2 dates before I went out with his friend (also 19/20) who had serious wandering hand syndrome. For some naive reason I thought that if I invited him while I was babysitting to help me with my physics homework he would actually HELP me with my physics - not spend the evening trying to investigate my underwear. I was rescued by my Mum popping in to see how I was getting on. At 14 I had NO idea of how to handle this bloke. Got rid of him sharpish! Mind you - the next one was 20....(I was 16 by then)

I remember telling Tony, oh so many years ago, I wasn't going to marry him if he was going to become a Vicar. How the mighty are fallen.

Bwhahahahahaha....oh this block swap is turning into a steamy topic!

Must admit....I met my husband when I was 17 and he was turning 22  I was graduating HS and he was graduating college.

OY..... however, the world is a very different place and I told my daughters to NEVER follow their mother's footsteps and if they married so young, it would only be over my dead body.

Well, I met my husband when I was 13 and he was 26. :bluesmile

We didn't date till I was 21 (I think it was 2 dates)and then it was several years before we went out again, maybe 3 times. We got married when I was 29 and he was 42.

Of course that has nothing to do with my blocks. I have washed the fabric. I leave for Drum Major Camp and 4 days in a hotel room all by myself tomorrow. So I hope to get them done next week.

Yesterday at 08:21 PM. Reason: Forgot the reason I was posting after reading all the posts I had missed.

Bwhahahahahah siwian! Bwhahahahahahahaha

Have fun in the hotel room making those hot blocks!
Don't worry about digressing in the topic.....as long as it's hot, it's applicable :dave:

I should have reread my post though.....as I didn't say I didn't date my husband till I was 20 and then got married. OY ... still too young in today's world.

OK, I didn't know I was signing up with a bunch of overachievers.

I'm going to wash the FQ I got in the swap and make a trial block (hopefully) this afternoon, it's too hot and muggy to leave the AC.

Margo - I like you're blocks.

This quilt is going to look nothing like anything I've ever done before. I'm not a traditional quilter per se, but I am an engineer.....

OK now I feel like I was old when I got married, my husband and I met in college and dated for 14 years before we got married (no we did not live together). We were both 35 (well, I turned 35 a month later).

Have a great day every one.

Sheesh! I'm gone for a week and this Hot Block goes into a total different Hot Topic!! :bg: My fabric was here when I got home yesterday so now I have to get serious about which block to make :re: And while I'm here I will say that our 29th anniversary is this Friday! I was out of college and DH out of tech school and the army (low draft number - remember those days?) when we met. Here we are - 3 kids and 2 grandkids later and pretty content with life.

It was fun catching up on all the posts!

Well I spent Monday ironing, cutting and sewing 3 different blocks trying to make up my mind. I was going to let y'all help me decide, but when I posted my message this site went to "cannot find server" and I couldn't get back on for a while. Soooo, I had to decide for myself. Now I am about half way to cutting out all my pieces. Then I will start sewing.
Unfortunately, tomorrow I have to check out of the hotel by 11 am and DD won't be thru until 5 pm. Do you think anyone will mind if I sit in the lobby of the college Music building and sew tomorrow? :whacky: Of course I could just sit in the van and sew-it has a power converter, just plug in the cord and sew.

if I don't get them sewn today, maybe I can talk DH into taking the sewing machine on vacation next week. He usually says there is not enough room.

I have posted my blocks Patty - unexpectedly school was shut today - the water was off for some reason , so after I had done some catch up work I came home again. Useful as I need to take my cat to the Vet. He is a wounded soldier - came in with a very sore back and a limp tail - he can move it some but not much. Very sad the sight of a cat with a droopy tail that drags on the ground...I reckon he has been bitten by Somebody!

Okay, so I was a little anxious with the picture and the spray sizing didn't dry yet  I did try to use all the colors just because I like them so much.

Yes Jan....those circles ARE everywhere. Looks like I will get the rest of these done now that I have my test block finished.

Is there anyone who is short fabric? Did everyone find it easy to work with the Kona?

ps.... after staring at it, I "might" make the circle larger.... will think about it tonight in my dreams.......

Very pretty Patty (I'm glad I didn't have to say that 3 times fast).

I'm a little nervous I don't think mine's going to look anything like anyone else's (I know Patty the colors will join them together....). Still haven't had a chance to get to working on it. I did get the fabric washed finally  Hopefully this Wed. My car's in the shop so I'll be stuck at home, and they're forecasting rain so I can't weed the garden which also needs to be done.

So much to do so little time.

Tech.....

Don't worry so much about how you "think" your block might look compared to everyone else...but have fun experimenting and just sewing. This is a real lesson in abondoning our high pressure world and just "cutting lose" and just improvising blocks.

Put a jazz station on the radio and let your mind wander....

I'm finished with block six and I just made a pot of :coffee2: so I'm starting the second half.

I did sew a block together of just scraps that I couldn't waste; not necessarily going to use it, but just playing around.

They;re predicting a "mini heat wave (2 days) for the beginning of the week so I'm trying to get cooking and baking done today. I did make 2 pans of Baklava and I'm taking one to my son for his birthday when we visit him.

I have to run and hide in my sewing room with my coffee so I'm not tempted to eat any of the pastry.

Please can you send my some of that Baklava????

I used to make it but haven't in years, but it keeps popping up everywhere yesterday Giada DeLarentus (sp?) was making it on TV and now you're talking about it. I may have to make some. But I'll have to take it somewhere, I don't want a whole pan of it sitting around......

I'm not worried about how mine will look. There's a technique I've been wanting to try for a while, I bought the book last fall that I think would be perfect if a little abstract. So that's the direction I'm thinking of heading. Maybe this afternoon if grocery shopping doesn't wear me out. (I just got back from a long bike ride that'll probably contribute too).

I got my pattern drawn up, copied and numbered. I was able to get all the strips cut and labeled. With what I got in the Block Swap I had just enought to do all the block pieces PLUS use all the colors mentioned!!!
After I get this next patch of purses made I will start paper piecing the blocks. Hope to have them done 2 weeks from now.

Tech....okay I'll put some Baklava in with your blocks :) My son was introduced to Baklava when he was two and it has been his favorite ever since.

Jan.....your package arrived today from over the pond. Your blocks are great!

What fun........ I can't believe I have two sets already.

Today at the quilt shop I was measuring fabric and then rewinding them on bolts. I have set up a pile of fabrics that I am going to get....I really, really shouldn't, but I know they will make great quilt backs and I have quite a few quilts that I should get quilted. At one point.......I think I got a bit delerious.......thought I heard myself say that I was "sick of fabric"....... but I just think it was a wave of illness from the print on the fabric as it passed as soon as I went onto another bolt.

I looooooooove Baklava. Especially made with pecans. I try to make it only around the holidays tho, because it is so fattening. I can't stop at one piece.

I think I made a boo-boo. I got 4 different fabrics. Red, black, yellow, and the "snow" one. That's all of the "hot block" colors that Hobby Lobby had in stock when I went. I thought the white one I got was labeled "snow", but I looked at the online store for more colors and the snow one looked slightly off-white. Mine is pure white. Did I buy the wrong one? I want to make sure before I start my blocks.

Bama....the colors were snow, black, daffodil, amber and peacock.

The snow is slightly an off white, but when it stands alone you can't tell that it is a different tone. I think it is hard telling from the online.

As long as you have the Kona cotton, I would say you were fine

Adva.... there is no pattern for the quilt. I was part of a fabric challenge for a fabric company and we were to make a quilt inspired by Shakespeare. "Dewing the Orb" is a quote from Midsummer's Night Dream.

The blue flowered fabric was one of the first fabrics designed by Paula Nadelstern when she was with Classic Cotton. The print came in the blue I used in the quilt and then a brown/eggplant/gold/tan. Unfortunately the colors came out as a home furnishing color rather than a "quilter's cotton" and I don't know if it was a big seller or not. Paula then switched over to Benertex and has been very successful in her association with them.

I have three more blocks to make. I sent my husband to the store for a new glue stick and it has made all the difference in the world. No more off brands with me....I'm sticking with my Elmer's washable.

I JUST MADE MY FIRST BLOCK FOR THE SWAP!!!!!!!

Now I have 12 more to make!! I'm going to do one a day I think, that way I won't get burnt out doing them. There are 17 pieces in one block!!!! I'm really pleased with how the first one came out, it's my first time understanding how to do paper piecing. I just hope that I am doing it as close to the right way as possible.

If I remember to bring my camera upstairs to my sewing room I will snap a pic and post it.

 Way to go Naomi!!!

Adva.....another great painting. That would be a great idea for a mystery quilt and dividing up the sections for everyone to interpret.

I happened to be down on 42nd street on Friday and Saturday. The entire time I was thinking how different the city was in the 40's. One thing I noticed right away was the sound. If someone told me to close my eyes and describe the city, the first thing I would relate was the sound of traffic and especially honking horns. Seems there is a new horn law that went into effect and down in the financial section it was $350 fine for (excessive?) horn honking. I am pooped from my visit and need a vacation

How's everyone else doing with their blocks?

Carolyn, don't worry, we'll take care of it later.

Gina, poet goddess, you don't need to have all the blocks in until the end of August...I'll look up the date...

BUT, if everyone gets them in early, they'll all be returned earlier.

Does that sound good with everyone?

Jeke..... you're right....it's all how you color the block that can change the entire dimension of what someone might think was a traditional block...

Hi All,

I woke with a sinus headache on Friday and called in sick to work and spent the day in my sewing room. It was a nice day. Got caught up on a couple of things and got the test block for this challenge 3/4 done. I need to finish it then I will post a pic to get your input. It's definitely different than anything I've done before. DH said "somebody's been playing" when he went into my sewing room to close the windows before bed. It was funny. Anyway, I'm busy from now thru Saturday and then we're out of town for a couple of days but hopefully I'll finish it next Wed.

Have a great holiday everyone.

Just so you are not shocked in September Carolyn, you will be receiving 10 1/2" blocks back. :bolt:

Blocks will be due to me no later than August 20. Let me repeat that, August 20 is deadline for me to have your blocks. I will repackage all blocks and remail so everyone can receive their blocks by September 1, 2007.

Gina, August 20th is the deadline. Don't worry, you'll make it.

Jay sent me a pix of her hot block in email    All I am going to say is she recolored a traditional block. :bluewink:

Tech, how are you feeling?

I was gonna be soooo smart and strip piece mine. I figured all the measurements out, got my fabric ready then proceeded to cut the opposite sizes of what I needed on most of my colors. So I am going to have to cut and sew each section. But at least I managed to do the right measurements for the 208 1 1/2 inch squares :bg: and could sew them as strips to the other sections.

I changed by block because of the size of all the pieces involved. When you start cutting 2 1/2 inch squares into triangles and trying to sew them together and especially when you multiply that by 10 per block by 13 blocks it was a little intimidating for a new swapper, little experienced piecer. I may make one just to see if I can do it. If I get it right I will show you.

Ok, Patty. Finally realized what you were talking about. For some reason I had 121/2 in my head. And I read the post many times giving the instructions. If they aren't ok let me know and I will redo them.

No way Carolyn....they're fine! Just didn't want you shocked or making plans for a certain size quilt and wondering what was going on.

I just realized this morning that I wasn't finished making my own blocks as I need to cut out one more

siwian....can't wait to see the block you're making.

I sent one to Patty and she is sooooooo smart maybe she can do it. I guess I really ought to figure out the photobucket thing.

Hmmm - guess I got a little carried away with the smilies :whacky: :whacky:

Beautiful block! I love it.

Looks like I won't have my blocks finished til the end of this month. Too many things going on around here right now. Hopefully by the 23rd or 24th things will be calmer here.:bolt: I feel stretched to my limit right now.

Patty, thanks for figuring the pic out. I did try and it kept telling me it was too big. I will have to have Kylee teach about photobucket.

Bama, work on it when you can. It takes all the fun out of it if it is stressful.

Nice block Jay.

I hope to sew some more of mine tomorrow.

I finished putting the floor in the hall today. Now it is up to DDs and DH to put the shelves together and in place. The sooner the shelves are in and filled the sooner I get a new sewing space. :bg: It only took me 6 hours to put the tiles down in that 5' x 19' room. I had to cut around 3 door frames.

Better watch it Jan and Naomi.........you're giving me ideas on having a self-portrait challenge! Which would be a really cool idea and would be fun for everyone for looking at their fabric as though it was only a color, rather than the design printed on the surface.

Hi All,

Feeling better here. 4 days camping in the UP will always cure me of any stress. Could have done with out the 50 degrees and raining wake up yesterday, but it got better, then we got home and wanted to go back.

Because we went farther away then planned we didn't come back until yesterday, so I didn't get to sew all day like I'd hoped. I really need to get moving. Sunday or Monday should work out.

Jay - I like your block. That's one of my favorite patterns, I have one in a star sampler I've been trying to get finished. (those darn ufo's).

Have a great weekend everyone if I don't get back before Monday.

Thanks, everyone, for the positive feedback on my block. I am still pretty much a beginner. I know a whole lot more than I have ever done although I have sewn for years. Thanks to Patty for the red and white swap and this one for getting me going. Oh, yeah, and snagging me into Civil War, too. :bg: :bg:

I had gotten a letter from PhotoSite of their disbanding and transferring photos over to SnapFish. I'm trying acclimate to SnapFish. urrrrrrrrrr so I hope this is working for you.

The blocks look terrific together.....and this has been one of my favorite swaps.....even from all the friendship groups I participated with on Genie :) I can't wait to see how everyone thinks about setting their blocks together into tops.

Well I was hoping to get mine done and out this week, BUT everything that can go wrong did AND is going wrong. My blocks are not co-operating with me, I have 10 purses that have to be done by Sunday, visit a friend in the hospital that has just given up on life, and get stuff together for a yard sale on Saturday at my sister house. HOPEFULLY next week will be a better week for me.:nc:

Naomi, you have plenty of time for the blocks to get to me. In your list of things, the blocks are probably the least important thing. I hope your friend is cheered with your company.

My friend, Glea, brought her blocks over to me today. She also used a traditional block. For the life of me I can't remember what she said it was. If I was any good at posting pictures, I would share but..... Maybe Kylee can help me with it tomorrow. She knows a whole lot more about it than I do.

Will get the blocks in the mail sometime next week. Got a lot going on over the next few days.

Hot block - Hot weather. We are anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees hotter than normal. It's getting old FAST.

I have 6 blocks done!!!! I decided to do a slash and sew block so I could just sew without having to follow a pattern. Still have to add some applique to those blocks. This is fun. I LOVE making things up as I go along. :bg: All of my blocks are similar, yet no two are alike.
I focused on the black and white section in the lower right of the painting. The area with the red circles.

Ten blocks pieced now! With applique done on four of them! I only stopped because I ran out of pre-washed snow fabric and had to to toss the extra yard I bought into the washing machine. :bg: I'm hoping to have them mailed by the end of the week, at least.

hello 'hot' fellow swappers,
i'm now in Israel, at my parent's house. had 3 days in Germany with a quilter friend, and then a 2 week trip with family and friends in Ireland. Both were wonderful. Ireland is lovely.

Can't wait for the blocks to arrive! Going back to older messages to check if there are pix i missed...

OK,

The first block I tried was much too time consuming I would never get them done in time. So I've chosen a traditional block instead. I have the sample sewn and all the pieces cut out. I'm hoping to get them in the mail by Monday 8/13 which should leave plenty of time to get to Patty. If it's not too expensive I may ship priority to make sure.

I'll post pics of both versions this week.

Ahem....Tech..... don't waste your money on Priority mail. Your blocks will get here in time. I have allowed some cushion time so everyone can get them on September 1st.

AdvaP..... the hot block swappers are going to pull a :coffee2: up to the moniter and listen to your summer adventures abroad. I know I would love to hear about your trip - and I'm guessing at least one stop into a fabric store?

Patty, no, I did'n't stop at a fabric store. I am not even sure there is one in Ireland :nc: . But I didn't need it anyways. Ireland is beautiful. So green and lush, and friendly people. We stayed in wondrerful B&B's, we went to local pubs to know the locals and listen to Irish music, and drink Guinness. we visited quaint colourful towns, castels, green parks, waterfalls, cliffs and lush woods. After I upload photos into my online album, I'll post a link for you all to see.
Now, while in Israel, I will visit a quilters community and do some sightseeing, as well as visit old friends.
That's it for now,

Adva

Our hot blocks will be a reminder of our computer friends who share our love of adventure and quilting.

Since the site will be closed in two weeks, those of you who can finish up as quickly as possible. Maybe we can get them all returned before the closing.

The plans for the RAOK are in effect and I am ready with the address and fabric to make a small quilt/wallhanging. I will add a note explaining who made what blocks. It may take me about two weeks to get this done with my work schedule and getting my daughter off to school in London. :( but, I don't want to think about being lonely right now.

We are all only as far away as an email. I go over to Quilters Talk forum.....it is run by Fons and Porter and there are lots of activities going on there. No, not the small tight knit group, but we can maybe get a thread going or even meet over in the yahoo group (if it works with Barb (Mom of Six).
