It wasn't a mess. I just wanted to get rid of lots of clothes. I realized that there were so many that I wasn't wearing. I was very successful.

I'm getting rid of exactly 25 items of clothing and 3 pairs of shoes. Things were either too small, didn't fit well, out of date or I just plain didn't like them! These were only clothes on hangers. I did the drawers and shelves a while back and got that trimmed down as well.

I came across a good hint a while ago. Maybe I'll do it. Take all of your clothes on hangers and turn the hangers around backwards. If you wear something put the hanger back the right way. If after 6 months or a year you've still got turned around hangers, get rid of those items. Good idea, huh?

It is a bit drastic, but you could try moving to a smaller house - that REALLY focusses your mind into keeping things that you have either a)used inthe past 6 months or b) love. If it doesn't fit into these catagories- bin it, or give away.

I like the hanger idea Lennie, I may try that when we move and see how much junk I brought with me!

Try living in a 24' trailer (caravan) for 2 years! That really pares things down. Did that while building a house a while back........... Jeez!

Good luck with your moving. It's such a pain.

Sigh, if I did that I'd have nothing in my closet. I haven't worked out of the home in an office environment in almost 5 years. Even then, it was business casual. So I have some skirts & tops I keep, just in case. Other than that there are some old suits, from when I had to wear them, and some dresses that I wear to functions that require them.

Thanks for the tip though. Maybe I'll try it with some of my casual clothing and weed them out too!:nah:

I hear you Jan! I'm packing to move too and I can't believe the amount of stuff I've gotten rid of...the funny thing is, I really can't believe the amount of sewing and craft stuff I STILL have!!! I think it's more than the rest of the house combined! LOL

Lennie it took a hurricane for me to get rid of my old stuff. I had things hanging in my closet that was in there for 15 years and I never wore them. Working clothes. Now I"m starting a new collection of them.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

See Susie, there is a silver lining to everything, even massive catastrophies! (Yeah right, easy for me to say!)

I console myself Lyn with the fact that my 23 year old daughter has 1 and a half tea chests of my little ponies. No way I can told off for having fabric then!

Jan
My son had all his kids papers from Kindergarten to 4th grade in his garage packed in boxes for them to have when they grew up and it went underwater. I didn't realize there were that many different My Little Pony's. Shows you what I had.............all boys.

Lennie,
I found out a long time ago (after a house fire) that I don't hang onto things like I use to. Losing things is not that hard for me anymore but parting with clothes, fabric and other little things of use is hard. Every time I throw something out I usually find a use for it after the trash man passes.

Sometimes it comes in handy to be a 'pack rat'.. I have lost 18 lbs. since my diabetes diagnosis, and my pants are getting rather baggy... The other day I went to the back of my closet and pulled out several outfits I outgrew when I quit smoking.. Tried on a few and guess what ! ! I now have 2 new 3 piece outfits, 5 pairs of pants, and 6 or 8 blouses and shirts.. I laundered them and have been having a good tim with my 'new' clothes..I could not believe the shirts would now button across my hipline, even when I sit down they are comfortable.. I am rather proud of the new way of life I am learning about .. Mostly new eating habits.. and they don't even hurt...And after I went back to my Dr 2 weeks ago, all my numbers are down.. I do not have to do the finger sticking every day, Thank Goodness ! !

Oh Libby that's great. Congratulations on the weight loss and I know the feeling about putting on all that weight after quitting smoking I gained around 45 pounds when I quit. It feels so good to fit in things and not feel like they are going to strangle you. :nah: Keep up the good work.
