I seem to have a collection of machines. The latest one that someone gave me is a Kenmore 158.19412 it appears to be a high slant shank machine. Unfortunately no manual was with it and it only has the straight stitch foot and plate. Is there a place that would have a zig-zag foot and plate? Also maybe a freemotion/darning foot? I do quilting and when I went to clean this machine there was just a small tuft of lint, I really don't think she used this very much. It does a nice straight stitch.

Sears still carries parts for this this machine at:

http://www3.sears.com/

They list an instruction manual and a zig zag needleplate insert, but I don't see any darning or embroidery foot.

Looking at the diagram of accessories, I believe your machine is low shank, although the diagram of the presser bar section does appear to have a slant shank foot attached. I have never seen a slant shank Kenmore, but others are more familiar with them than I.

You might check on the Yahoo Vintage Kenmore Group, there is a lot of Kenmore information there.

Thanks, Ed. I knew someone here would have information. I compared the shank to my Touch & Sew Singer slant and it is a slanted one and longer/taller than the T&S. I will try to find the Yahoo group and give them a holler.

Check with your local dealers. They often can get parts that Sears can't. That model is not listed but there are some very similar models listed. Be sure to take in the plate you have to match up. Your foot is probably a "Super High". Only Singer uses "Slant". Take it in also and your dealer can tell you.

Thanks, I didn't realize that dealers might have parts for vintage Kenmores. My closest dealer is about an hour away but will call to see if he might have anything. I joined the group suggested so will see what info they might offer.

Only Singer uses "Slant".

Don't forget the Vikings that started with the 900 series, Tom. They're also slants, but different from the Singers.

Thanks Bill. Guess all those years of Singer brainwashing haven't cleared yet.

Pinecone, you might check out Sew4less on line. I think they have the high shank feet for your Kenmore.

Anyone interested in a Bernina 440 QEE, 1 1/2 year old, pristine condition, with embroidery attachment?
I am looking to trade up to the 730E.

The Bernina's are nice, but I'm waiting to check out the new 2 Viking Sapphire large bed free arm machines when they come in to my dealers. I hear there will be a 3rd model Sapphire and I am wondering if it will be an embroidery model.

Piney - I don't the age of the Kenmore that you listed, but most latter year Kenmore's are made by Janome so most but not all of their feet, etc fit the Kenmore. Bill listed the years via numbers in a message about a month ago. Also, Clothilde's catalogue has/had a diagram and description showing what slant/low/high shanks was all about. Don't know whether this will help or not but try it out. You may want to check out Sears Canada site as well. Most of the same parts but may have others on hand. If you decide to check out the Janome make sure you can return it. I have an Elna and the parts are supposed to be interchangable but the 1/4 foot wasn't. It may have been my machine that was a little out but the needle ended up hitting the plate just a tad when I tried out a Janome foot. Good luck.

Piney, a quick trip to your local dealer will clear up all these questions. Most likely Janome feet will not fit your machine as it is ( Janome made Kenmores have a 385 prefix) but if you have a "super high" you are not going to find many feet for it. However, there is an adapter that will allow you to use a multitude of feet from other brands including Janome. As Sancin pointed out not all Janome feet fit all Janomes like not all Singer feet fit all Singers or all Pfaff feet fit all Pfaffs, etc. It will take your dealer 2 seconds to look at one of your feet and know what you need.

If Piney's Kenmore manufacturer number is 158, I think Bill said that is made by Maruzen (later Jaguar) if I remember his post correctly.

Thank you Sancin, I have compared the shank with my Janome, Singers and other Kennie. No match.

Tom, I will probably have to bring it in to the dealer. I keep trying to remember to call them (lucky to have 2 within 45 minutes) but my brain falls out and I forget until after-hours.:re:

Kylnne2, thanks, I did write down that this is made by Maruzen in Japan. I had never heard of them. Learning all the time.

Thanks so much everyone.

Piney if none of those match it is a "super high". all you need is a "super high to low shank" adapter. You can then use most standard low shank feet.
