I am making some long scarves to wrap her head for a friend who has just started chemo and lost her hair. She tells me all head coverings she has makes her head itch. I have seen advertised cloth skull caps to wear under wigs and hats to prevent itching. There are a lot of knit and crochet ones on line but no fabric ones.

So - Does any one know how to make a skull cap or where I can find a free pattern for an under cap for cancer hats? I am assuming that a knit will fit best.

Thanks

It is interesting that some people wear scarves and some never do. I am a scarf wearer and literally have drawers of them in all shapes, colours and fabrics. Yet my friend doesn't own one.

The first thing I thought of was the little caps that babies are issued when they are born. If you go through the baby aisle in a department store, you should see what I mean. I looked on the internet, and found a couple of possibilities. I think both would need a little altering to fit your idea.

This is pretty close, if you took of the cuff:

This might work, if you didn't use the ties:

If you find anything that is what you are looking for, let us know!

You might check this site and see if there is something that could be adapted. There is a pretty decent snood pattern that might work.

I've seen some free patterns on the net for those, think they are called chemo caps, there are a few sites that post the cap patterns, and you can make them for charity. If I get a chance later tonight I'll do some scouting around, but I have to make some supper, before hubby eats everything else in the fridge!

Thanks, everyone. I did find one on the web I was going to adjust, and may still make just to have a different style. Then today I stopped into a craft store to get a replacement ribbon for a Christmas gift necklace and walked out 20 min later minus $55. Most of it was for patterns and a great dyeing book - I needed? And a perfect ball shapped cap pattern, complete with bangs!! My friend was told by her oncolgist team to make undercaps out of old t-shirts, but I think I can scout out some newer and soft knit!

Thanks again for being a truly great bunch of people!

I have made a bunch of the chemo turbans, and I make them out of the softest interlock knit.. I don't see how that could irritate anybody, no matter how sensitive the skin.. Check the turban instructions on Nancy's website under the charity free patterns she offers.. Nancy's Notions.com

I don't remember the exact site as I printed out the pattern but the following are the sites I have for chemo caps. As you will find out - I have long lists. This morning my daughter nagged me across country by phone about how cluttered my life is!! And she wants me to move to smaller place!!
**********************************
http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/cancercaps.html - a lot of knit and crochet and links
http://craftersjourney.com/fleece-hat-patterns/ - ditto
http://www.andersonsplace.net/sewing/caul_cap.htm - a nice hat
http://www.headhuggers.org/misc/links.htm - lots and lots and lots * * *
http://www.squidoo.com/chemowraps/ - very interesting and tips
http://proudmommy.tripod.com/snood.html

http://www.chemocaps.com/page3.htm -knitting patterns
http://www.fmfcorp.com/familyspot/scarf-liner.html - small crochet - for scarves to stay on

For sale
http://www.tlcdirect.org/ - has picture of a padded cap
- I seem to recall this was the one I was going to copy.

Good luck - lots of sites want volunteers to make caps.
bevscountrycottage.com - has infant patterns and requests for people to sew for returning military.

Your daughter has no clue, huh Nancy? LOL My daughter keeps telling me I keep too much clutter. Well, I'm in the middle of moving and have gotten rid of tons of stuff and guess what! I STILL have more sewing and craft stuff than "household" stuff! Shows you what's important, huh?

My daughter helped me dismantle my parents house and I told her at the time to remember how this works. I think she is worried about her own time and stuff and not mine. :bluewink:

I often wonder if she thinks about what I will put everything if I move to a smaller place. I have a small townhouse, but it is a one story one which is very hard to find these days of land shortages. And it has lots of windows. One of my quilting friends and her bored husband retired to a lovely high rise apt one would die for and just moved back into a house d/t claustophobia and no place for all her quilts and fabric. And she is a minimalist! :re: She has sons.
