Still need to do the quilting but it's ready to go. I love the way it turned out. The batik fabric is my favorite.

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u20/lendube/IMG_0603.jpg

I put sashing and borders on it but I've always loved the patterns that fool the eye so I went for that look by putting the pieces of batik directly up against the sashing and borders. You can't really distinguish where the blocks begin and end unless you look closely. Can't wait to actually quilt it.

What do you think? Should I go with "echo" quilting or "in the ditch" or some other beginner's stitch? It's a double bed size so it will be awkward to manuver while quilting. Any tips??

It looks great. Orange is my favorite color. In the ditch would be a good choice ~ I'm sure others will chime in too.

Great job Lennie! I'd probably stitch in the ditch too although you could probably stipple this one too.

I love the way your irregular 9 patches disappear occasionally - I like patterns that give you those - what? moments too . The best advice I can give (which is limited lets face it) is the stuff that was given to me...

"Jan...just wondering if you have the bottom and top pinned properly. I know that the first quilt I quilted with my walking foot, I didn't have the top and bottom smoothed and stretched properly before I pinned. Had lots of wrinkles especially on the bottom. Now that I do stretch them out and pin...everything works great. This is a good site for the techniques...
http://easymade.com/video_basic.html

Another thing that I do is to make my stitch length longer. When I turn my machine on it is usually at 2.0 but when I use my walking foot I change to 3.6. I find a short stitch can cause me problems due to the thickness of the fabric." -HeyJudee
so - stretch that bottom tight as a drum and tape it to the floor, then sandwich and pin, pin, pin until your fingers are sore! I was hoping to get away with the spray baste but it is not enough for a large area - helps to hold it there while you are pinning.

Start from the middle and work out when sewing - I have not had much luck in just outlining the patches - things always seem to shift, so you may need to sew all along the sashing in long rows and then go back to the details in the blocks.

If I were you, I'd wait for better suggestions than from me! If you go my way you lose that
"where did the corner of the block go?" feeling.
love and kisses, Jan

Great job Lennie. I want to learn how to do that Crazy patch quilting. I always wind up with a piece that don't fit.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

Looks great Lennie.

I must admit though I had a moment when I was looking at the first photo and thought it was the whole quilt. I sat looking at it and wondering what I could say that would be positive but still honest. :nervous:

As a block and surrounded by other blocks it is really effective but when I thought it was the whole quilt .... well. I was very glad to see the next photo and breathed a sigh of relief. Not being a quilter I obviously can't help with how to quilt it but I think (?) that stitching (in the ditch?) around the shapes that make up your blocks would really accentuate the pattern ("pop" to quote HeyJudee) and it might be too "mixed up" if you went another way. However I don't know what I'm talking about.

If this is the quilt you were considering giving away - think again! This one looks like a keeper to me - and it looks like it suits you - warm and just a little bit quirky.

I'm definitely going to have to get around to quilting one of these days.

You guys are so great for my ego! :bg:

Thanks for the suggestions,. I am now leaning to "stitching in the ditch". I tried "echo" on a corresponding table runner and I'm not sure I like it ~ besides it's twice as much work!

Jan, great info. Thanks for that. No better way to learn than from someone else's trials.......

Susie, I've got directions for this "Crazy 9 Patch" that are so simple. It's so much fun too. Be happy to share with you. I can scan and send to your email if you'd like. Let me know.

Pauline, you little devil! You really cracked me up! :bg: I looked at the block to see what you saw and you're right. Would have been hard to find something positive there. I also noticed that the block I chose to photograph has two the same fabrics next to each other (the batik). As luck would have it I think that's the only block in the bunch that's like that! And no, I'm not giving this one away. Had it been one of my kids, quite possibly, but not to dh's step niece that I hardly know. I like it more than I do her. (Ooo, was that nasty? :nc: :bluewink: )

I hope everyone clicked on the little square on the photo of the full quilt to see it a bit more "up close".

thanks, Lennie

Way to go Lennie! We have another quilter in our midst!!! Stitch in the ditch is one way to go. But you will have to turn the quilt a lot to stitch each block. If you would be willing to try free-motion, you could do some meandering or loops. This site has some pics of them. Those are the easiest to start with. If you try free-motion, make sure that you make a practice sandwich and practice first. Another tip is to draw with a pencil & paper until you get comfortable with the motions then try on the sandwich.

Thanks again, guys!

Judy, thank you so much for that info. You just got to the heart of the matter. To be honest, as excited as I am about starting to quilt in a sense I 've been dreading it since it's such a large piece. I'm afraid of the manuvering necessary to get it done.

I'll study these techniques you've given me and practice. There's no rush on this quilt at all. I'd rather get it right and do it in a way that I've enjoyed or I'm afraid my first might be my last if it's too big a pain.

It's gotta be fun! I appreciate these bits of advice so much ladies! :bluesmile

Lennie, I posted some sites to try to help Jan with her quilting. Look under the Asian Beauty thread to see if there is anything that may help you.

Thanks, Judy. I'll keep a closer eye on that thread before you spread yourself too thin! That running back and forth is good exercise though...

I laughed when I read Pauline's post cause I was exactly in the same frame of mind. But I love the whole quilt picture, its GREAT! It really looks good Lennie, really good. Congrats on diving in with both feet first! I'm still a stitch in the ditcher but have done some free motion now. I bought a book with lots of quilt templates in it for quilting, so will have to take another leap into the unknown with the next project. Darn it - I love quilting!

Thanks so much but boy, I have to watch the order in which I post pics. I guess it really does make a difference! :whacky:

I also thought of another alternative. I have an embroidery machine. Duh! It has some built in quilt patterns. Duh! I tried one today and it looked good but it was so small that it would take me years to cover the quilt. I enlarged it a bit and with another one I think I can cover the quilt nicely.

It will still take time and I have to figure out the right color but still...it might just work.

Haven't decided and I'm still going to give it time.
