I was looking around the internet and wanted a play gym for my little one who is 3 months old and they are just so expensive. I tried to look and see if there was like a pattern or a project website where I could see how to make one. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Could you send a link for a pic of exactly what you are wanting. There are just so many designs out there.

Hi Ang
I don't know how adaptable a sewer you are but don't think a toy gym would be hard to do if done by combining patterns of different things. The bottom is essentially a small quilt with a pillow of sorts (which I am told one shouldn't use for safely reasons). For the arches that go up and have things hanging from them I would suggest you go to a shop that makes custom plastic tubing/dowling, not as expensive as you would suspect, and ask them about bendible dowling. Cover and bend, purchase or make toys to hang from the dowling. It would be very cute, but to tell you the truth, if it were me, by the time it would take to find all the pieces the baby would have grown past it. My grandson has something like this and he did love it but once he started to turn over he wanted to get out from under it. The one toy he has played with consistently for nearly 6 months has been a 'thing' that clips to the side of the crib that has lots of things to push and pull but most importantly has a plastic aquarium that facinates him. However, it was a gift and I suspect quite an expensive one.

When my children were infants I had them in play pens (largely because the floors were so cold in the house we lived in). I just got long pieces of gros grain ribbon and tied whatever toys were around that day across the top of the playpen. They liked them but I did have to be careful when they started to sit up independantly or other wise that the string was above their head. I also used to do the same thing with tying toys on to a the high chair. If you have a stroller you could string things across the top of the cover. BUT, my 'babies' are now in their mid 30's and like to buy everything already made up and not make do, like my generation did. :bolt: It is up to you. FYI: Babies like black and white things due to the contrast (as shown by research). When I see my grandson with all his brightly coloured toys all around him I think they all look the same! :nervous:

Another thing that my grandson loved/s is crinkly things. I am making quilt for him and have discovered that the clear film one uses to roast turkey in has the same sound so am putting a few pieces behind a few blocks in his quilt. I don't know how it will work, but should take any heat from washing machine and when held under water does not break up. The cats love that noise as well.

Good luck and let us know what you do.

I would try pipe insulation for the arches. I would sew two tubes of fabric in the seams add a small loop to place the toy on. Make a blanket and sew the arches into the corners. Should be fairl simple.

Sancin,
That's not a bad idea with the string across the playpin with toys attached. I think I will try to get some toys and do that. I never thought of that. It definitely would be a lot easier to make. lol :bluesmile

Thanks,
