If you have a raglan sleeve tshirt pattern you can cut the neck right down (into a wide scoop neck) and make a casing for elastic around the neckline by folding it over. Then just put a casing at the bottom of the shirt and add a casing at the sleeve bottoms. I actually used some bias a bit up from the bottom of the sleeve so there was a ruffle under the gather. Pop some elastic in the casings. Voila. I have a pattern for a peasant top which is what I used but when you lay out the pieces flat it looks more like a raglan tshirt. When you make a woven shirt from a tshirt pattern though it will come out quite a bit smaller because of the lack of stretch. I've made both a peasant top from broderie - which looks great but dd says is too "scratchy" and a polka dot tshirt fabric peasant top. Hope this is helpful. Pauline

YouCanMakeThis.com has a real cute peasant blouse for girls. The ways to do this type of blouse is endless. I bought it and was very pleased. I am a beginner and so far i've completed 3 blouses. They give you a templet to go by that has different sizes. Buying from them also helps out this sewing forum Goodluck with whatever you decide to do. |

Simplicity 5695 is what I've used. It is a dress, but I just shorten it to the length I wanted for a blouse.

I bought and printed the pattern from "you can make it". I'll start on it in the morning. Do I need to cut the ruffle for the bottom edge on the bias or does it make any difference? Grandma C |

Grandma C Sorry I can't help you with there. All I did was measure what it told me to and sewed it on lol. I'm still very new to sewing but maybe someone will come along and help you with that. |

I have not used that particular pattern, but I've never cut my ruffles on the bias if that helps you at all.

I finished it. I just need to adjust the elastic at the neck. I will do that when I seen Chloe this weekend. I hope it fits. here is a picture of the blouse and also an emergency poncha I made of fleece when she lost her jacket and the weather turnd cold. http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u174/grandmac_album/peasentblouse3-20-07.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u174/grandmac_album/pancho3-19-07-1.jpg thanks for the help!! I had one problem! Why wouldn't the fabric shirr. does the fabric type matter. You know, I forgot about trying steam to make it shirr more. I shirred the neck and ended up making a cassing and putting elastic in it. Oh well! Grandma C |

When you place the patter on the fold move it out about an inch or two and cut it out. It will give you a much fuller look to it.

Great job Grandma C. I didn't have any problems shirring mine. I used cotton print and just shirred the front and back around the chest area. I also made a dress using this pattern and it turned out real cute. It's endless what you can do with this pattern. |

Nice job! I prefer the look of the casing on yours over the shirring which is pictured on the pattern front. Take care,

You girls are so kind and encouragment spurs me on to new heights. I tried the shirring again and increased the presser foot pressure and changed the needle tension from 4 to 1. It shirred beautifully and so I added some decorative stitching to the blouse and shirred across the lower chest front and back. Here is the result. You are correct. This pattern has immense possibilities. One of the ladies I work with wants me to make a dress for her 6 month old by that pattern. I still owe her a baby shower gift. Guess I was just waiting for the right pattern. Grandma C |

Grandma C, it looks fabo! When you did your shirring, did you just wind elastic around your bobbin? I am looking into making this shirt this weekend. That looks awesome! |

I hand wound the elastic onto the bobbin stretching a little bit. be sure and test a piece of fabric first. I found I had to make a few more adjustments to the janome than I did with the simplicity machine. I changed the needle tension to 1 and tightened the presser foot pressure. I also lengthened the stitch and used a slight zigzag stitch. I think it depends on the fabric type. just be reddy to play around with it till its right. The more rows you do the more it shirrs. I have also read that a little steaming after your done makes it shirr more. Got to go to work. May God bless your efforts. Grandma C |

I'd love to see everyone elses pictures of this patterns possibilities. If Chloe likes this one I will make more. I already have in mind to make one with a wide full collar and only a small cap sleeve and the very bottom shirred or with an elastic cassing. Thanks so much for the encouragment. I am making a pair of shorts to go with the top. I'd love to make a redundo or a twirll skirt but Chloe is a pants kind Girl. Grandmac |

I am currently cutting out the pattern for my daughter right now. I was just wondering if everybody here who used this actually measured the sleeve pattern to see if it matched the author's measurements. I printed out both the bodice and sleeve pages, but only my bodice measurements were correct. Nothing I could do to my printer made the sleeves right. I ended up enlarging the pattern on my computer screen til it matched the given dimensions and tracing. Was it just me with this problem? |

danaspillar, I'm sorry to say I didn't even measure the pattern pieces. They went together OK and look about right for Chloe. I hope I didn't make a mistake. I did not get to see Chloe to try them on her. I will have to mail them and hope for the best. I hope your project works out as you envision it. Grandma C |

peasentblouse! with shorts to match. peasentblouse #2. Catherine, I didn't move the pattern out from the fold because petite little chloe doesen't seem to like clothes that make her "look fat". I gave her two expensive rtw dresses smocked around the neck with puffed sleeeves and no waist just full and straignt to the knees. They are beautifull and she wont wear them. I hope these are full enough for her to get them on over her head. I started out using simplicity 5489 but then I found some instructions on how to make pants from Bandana's, so I have been using that method, it's so much easier than trying to follow a pattern lol. On another thread (sewing for children) someone posted a link to the instructions, i'm sure you will find it very interesting. If you can't find them, let me know and I will see if I can locate it for you. Also, thanks for the compliments. I am very new to sewing so I'm just doing the best I can I really love the blouses you made, the decrative stitching is GREAT! |

Diannab, How is your peasant blouse comming? Addicted to sewing, I struggled with sewing when I was growing up. My Mom for the most part was an expert seamstress and I so wanted to sew as well as she did. When I couldn't Ii became frustrated and quit. When my boys were 6 1/2 and newborn I sewed for them out of necessity and did for 2-3 years. I have rarely made anything for myself that I was happy with. since I found this forum and have a place to ask questions and get feedback I am doing much better on my sewing. A little Cymbalta helps my frustration level also You are doing a great job. Keep at it. |

Hey I haven't had a chance to start on mine yet :( I am doing it without a pattern though! So this will be fun! LOL I love experimenting and seeing if I can get it right. Right now I am frustrated (because I am using a pattern) with a top I am doing. :( It looks like a scrub top and I have had to seam rip it so many times due to it not fitting that it is unreal! :*( I am tired of altering store bought patterns for the kiddos. :( That is why I pretty much draft up my own for them. It is fairly easy and forgiving to draft for kiddos. Addicted - aside from bandana pants I have another easy/lazy way to do childrens pants. hehhehehehe. Take a pair of pants that fit them perfectly fold them like you would to hang them up, with inside seams touching. SO when you lay them down you see the curve of the crotch coming back to you and straight front. Now if you lay these on a fold, you will have one seam pants. Trace them. Cut them out adding 2 inches for seaming and what not and add at least an extra 2 inches at top for the elastic casing! Presto easy, pattern free pants! |
