I am trying to make Simplicity's #4887. View A. It's a wrap-front top. I made this one before and needed to add length to where the two wrap top pieces attach to the bottom of the front. I thought that if I extended the length about 2 inches on the bottom of this piece, problem solved, but NO! I ended up with raw edges exposed after matching the center front. Pam? Are you out there? How should I add length to the front top half? TIA, Joni |

Why is it short? Full bust? Sway back? Full abdoman? The solution is probably in the problem. In a normal situation, if you want it longer, you would just move up the pattern, slash across it, add the two inches, straighten the diagonal line at the bottom and that would pretty much be it...but that would be adding length to front and back. If you are adding fullness to the bustline, you slash the bustline and add there...You would need to rock the excess width that normally would go into the bust dart into the sleeve where the "hidden" dart is... If the problem is abdominal, you would probably slash at center and rock the whole thing down as you would with a maternity top (not suggesting anything except that should be the alteration. I would think that you might have the same type of alteration with sway back.... If I haven't hit the nail just yet...let me know, I'm still thinking here....

Pam, the front to this top is in 3 pieces. The problem I am encountering is that the top 2 pieces which criss-cross, end up ACROSS my bustline instead of just below. I want to add length to these two overlapping pieces. The overall length of the total blouse is not the difficulty, just these two sections. Both call for a narrow hem where they intersect, yet because of the design of the piece, I am unsure of where to make the extension. Probably clear as mud. . . |

Joni, what would happen if you made the pieces wider at the bust, not longer? Would this solve the problem?

Pam, no that would not solve the problem. Width is not the issue, it is the span between my shoulder level and bustline. Up and down, not across. I was just here studying the pattern piece, where the two sections will meet, the piece has a little dogleg angle. This is the area that was producing the raw edge. I wondered if I just tapered it down to a level angle, (since this would be covered by joining to the lower top front) if this would eliminate the raw edge??? I'm probably making this more difficult than necessary. Wish I knew how to scan a photo of the piece, but then I wish I knew a lot of other things as well LOL |

There is nothing wrong with tapering it off or cutting something. If that is all it needs, then do it, no problem.

Pam, in re-reading your replies to my question, it suddenly became crystal clear what I need to do!! Perhaps the addition of breakfast with my 5 year old grandson helped clear the cobwebs from my challenged brain!! Thanks for all that you do for this board!! |

I'm glad it helped. Sometimes just talking about the problem, even if the other guy isn't right, can help solve it.
