My name is Jen, I live in Ithaca, NY and I have quilted and I'm trying to learn how to do clothes. I've made a jumper for my dd and a simple skirt for me. Yesterday It took me 5 hours to make a jumper that won't fit over anyone's head! (different pattern) I really want to make nice things, and my biggest problem is that: I rush rush rush, I give up too easily and I don't have a teacher. It's hard for me to learn by reading about it, I really need to see it, up close in my face. This site is so great and I am so ready to try new things. |

Hi Jen from across the nation, Why don't you try finding classes? There are usually some around at schools, community classes, sewing groups. Ask at the local fabric shops. Good luck, Lennie |

Hey neighbor. I'm in Syracuse now but we just moved here from Moravia -- just down the road. My oldest daughter just moved to Buffalo from Ithaca -- which she really didn't want to do but her new husband has a job and family in Buffalo. My youngest daughter lived in Ithaca for four years while she was at Cornell. There is also Patty in Skaneateles on these boards. So there you go, lots of neighbors right here. Dorothy |

Welcome Jen. In addition to the answers there seems to be a lot of visual aids out there in cyberspace (downloadable video how-tos) and the girls here seem to know where they all are. A book with a lot of step by step detailed but simple instructions might help. I'm the same - I can learn about some things by reading about them (facts etc.) but something as 3 dimensional as sewing is easier if you can see what is going on. Don't give up on the jumper yet - there is probably something that can be done to salvage it. Pauline

Hi Dorothy! A good friend of mine who is also learning to sew, lives in Genoa and is trying to get me to buy a house either there or in Moravia. I don't know much about the schools there though. Ithaca has a good school system, but we can't possibly afford a house here. It's a small world! Hey neighbor. I'm in Syracuse now but we just moved here from Moravia -- just down the road. My oldest daughter just moved to Buffalo from Ithaca -- which she really didn't want to do but her new husband has a job and family in Buffalo.
