Ours eat dry food, thank Goodness. Some of the same brands, but the dry foods are not on there. I heard a little about the recall on the radio today, but missed what the problem with the food was. What was wrong with it? |

The website mentions renal failure, but isn't more specifi. I had heard it is makig the dogs vomit/diareaha, thus dehydrating them. Luckily, while I do use canned food, it is not on recall.

That's scary. First it was problems with spinach, then peanut butter. Now it's our pet's food. |

They have had to hire more people to answer phones. This is very serious. Many animals have died. They don't know what the problem is yet.

I checked the first day this was posted and today I went back to double check. There are more brands on there now. So if you checked early you might want to go back and check again.

The grocery store here has pulled most of their wet pet foods from the shelves. I'm glad ours eat only dry food and sometimes some boiled chicken. Makes me worry about the dry food tho since our brand is on there. My mothers dogs eat canned food. |

I just read that the problem was from rodent poison in wheat from China that went into the pet food. Apparently the company knew in December that there might be problems but didn't issue warning until pets started dying. Unbelievable. |

Purina and Friskies brands are not affected by the recall. I am so glad I use those to feed my cats. They produce their products in their own mills and there are a great many varieties for even the most finicky or sensitive cats. If your cat or dog is made ill by the recalled foods make sure you save the can or pouch and give it to your vet so he or she can test it. Katherine McCrea

Hey everyone! Heads up! Purina is now starting to recall food. Hill's Science Diet has added a dry food to the list. I am about ready to start cooking for my critters. The culprit in all this is wheat from China. Hello???? Why when we have all this luscious farmland are we buing WHEAT from China???? I am off to read if the foods I feed have wheat gluton in them.

Do you know of a website that lists the recalled Purina dry foods? I just bought some Purina Cat Chow. This is really getting scary. I can't imagine having to cook meat for 5 pets. I'm thinking of getting some canned tuna for the cats. I've been giving table scraps to our old dog. Poor girl wouldn't survive getting sick. She usually eats the soft burger-like dog food. |

Our evening news in Canada announced that a dry dog and cat food called Prescription Diet that can only be purchased at a vets has been recalled. The announcer suggested that we check the ingredients listed on the packaging before purchasing any pet food. The ingredients that we should avoid are WHEAT OR WHEAT GLUTEN, BHT, ETHOXYQUINE, AND BHA. My dog died about 6 years ago and we lost our cat last year, all of old age. But I have 2 Grandpuppies and I make their doggie treats for them. Found the treats listed on the internet. Bet their is sites for homemade dog food. Make a big batch and freeze. I freeze the treats. jessie s |

Here is a link to a recent article that includes Purina and Hill's brands.http://www.thestar.com/News/article/198242 I don't know about the rest of you but I am also getting a little bit scared about the food that we eat. They will not disclose who supplied this wheat nor are they telling us who else got wheat form this supplier. Gina

I wouldn't mind cooking food for my cats, but they like dry food and turkey at that. I went to an natural pet market and got a few samples of their dry, which has no grains in it. Now to see if the critters will eat it. Also found some ferret food. We found out that ferret food uses CORN gluten. Daughter looked all over the web last night and can find no info on it. The ferret food comes from New York. Weezy |

Mary, where did you find the recipes? Is it much more expensive than buying good pet food? |

I found a book at the vet's office. It gave all sorts of recipes for meals and treats. It ends up making your own dog food is about the same price as a good quality dog food overall. Basically, a dog needs 1/3 carbs, 1/3 vegetables and 1/3 meat. I cook up a pkge. of regular hamburger, mix in with a cup of cooked rice and one cup of mixed vegetables. Fresh or frozen is fine. This is a lot for my little dogs. I keep it in the refrigerator and feed them twice a day. They can have turkey, chicken, beef or lamb along with rice, pasta or potato. They also love tomatoes so you can add a can of those too for moisture. This is to be given along with dry foods. They need dry crunchy food for good gums and teeth. Don't give them onions, garlic or raisins. I vary this all the time so they don't get bored with the same stuff. MaryW

I have to add this is what I do for my dogs. It may not be good for yours. If they have allergies or any type of health problem you should consult your vet before trying the natural foods.

Mary, Why no Garlic? I used that for years as flea prevention. I would just sprinkle a bit of the powder on my dogs food. Gina

The vet told me it makes their heart race the same as chocolate. Maybe it is my breed of dog but that is what he said.

Mary, grapes are bad too. Logical, raisins are just dried grapes. Here is a link to Human Foods that are Poison to Dogs. http://www.petalia.com.au/templates/storytemplate_process.cfm?story_no=257#RelatedProd ucts I suggest everyone check with their Vet. for the most up to date information and not rely on just one website though. Boy, I gave my Lab grapes for years. It was a treat when we went to visit the aunt in the nursing home - all the residents got such a kick out of feeding a dog grapes. And here is a link to Menu Foods recall list. http://www.menufoods.com/recall/ |

Everything but the IAMS dry food and the Three Dog Bakery treats has been discarded in our dog food storage area. I'm going to make doggie biscuits and meatballs this weekend for our "Pampered Pooch". Patsy Patsy
