Hi everyone. I just joined this site because I bought my first sewing machine (Singer model 3116) and I'm sure I'm going to need lots of help. I'm looking around to find some tutorials on sewing to help me out and I found this book, Sewing for Dummies (http://www.amazon.com/Sewing-Dummies-Janice-Saunders-Maresh/dp/0764568477), which I found on Amazon. I was wondering if this would be a good book for a noob like me? Thanks. |

Hi! I actually think that it's the best! I had a book 'Sew Fast Sew Easy' it was okay, but 'Sewing for Dummies' has everything! This book is what really taught me pretty much everything i know, well and this site of course I still use it to this day. I definietly recommend it! |

Hi! Finally, a question I can answer with some authority! LOL! I purchased Simplicity's Simply The Best Sewing Book (revised edition) and literally taught myself to sew with it. Between this book and my sewing machine manual, I was able to accomplish what I thought was impossible - actual garment construction! HTH! Katie |

Katie, great minds must think alike, lol. I just found this book yesterday (it was referenced in one of their articles on Sewing 101). The book seems like a good resource, so I bought that along with the Sewing for Dummies book. The Simplicity site seems like a good one to bookmark, along with threads and a couple others I've found. Now all I need to do is order some fabric so I can practice. |

Hey, if your looking for fabric to practice on I would suggest going to Walmart you can buy a yard for $1.00 and they have some pretty good fabrics Its cheaper then Joanns and other fabric shops. Just a suggestion |

Just a suggestion Thanks for the advice. I found some Lycra fabric through this eBay store (http://cgi.ebay.com/Solid-Black-Stretch-knit-Lycra-Fabric-1-yd-dance-swim_W0QQitemZ330089410526QQcategoryZ71213QQtcZpho toQQcmdZViewItem) and I was wondering if you all could give me your opinion on this. Is this a good deal? Thanks again everyone for all your help. |

I would Not start with a lycra fabric if you are a beginner.. It would be best to start with a woven fabric, with no stretch factor to worry about.. Lycra stretches sideways and up and down.. Its wonderful fabric for bathing suits, etc, but not to learn on.. Get some woven cotton, or cotton/poly blend to learn on..

Libby, thanks for the tip. I will most likely do that since the books I ordered will probably have me start off making t-shirts or some such thing. Eventually I need to get into learning to sew the lycra since that is the main reason I bought this machine. |
