Hi there, I've made several pet beds. One way is to just make a bean bag style bed and fill it with polyester fiberfill. It's washable and soft. Use good quality filling so it'll hold up and not go flat. It goes together like a beach ball would. 6 or 8 panels and then a circle to join them at the top and bottom. Get it? Getting the circle the right size and sewn in nicely can be tough if you're making the pattern from scratch. I suggest that you look at pattern books. There are tons of pet patterns out there. Beds and otherwise. Lennie |

Make sure you make the bed with tightly woven fabric. If your little dog is like mine he scratches about to lie down and his nails have cut through every bed I have made him. At this point in his life I have found a use for all those old and unmatched pillow cases and towels.

Thanks for the ideas so far, since the pup is quite young now, this will give me time to scratch my head, on how to make a bed,I was thinking of something like a basinette type,I have lots of old towels, that I can use for the time being in a box.its been a long time since we had a puppy to train too. |

Good point, Nancy, I have this great fabric I've used. It's sherpa on one side and heavy denim on the other. It's a bear to sew with (because it's so heavy) but if you and your machine can handle it the fabric will hold up to rough use. I'd suggest heavy duty thread as well. Oh, the fabric is expensive. I got it half price but regularly at JoAnn's it was $20.00 per yd. Lennie |

I was going to make my dog a bed but my husband and I stopped in at Target and they had several nice ones for $20. Between the cost of materials and the time involved I decided to buy one. Dorothy |

I have big dogs, so I made a couple of bigger cushion-type beds out of a denim fabric. I made removable covers in an envelope style (because I didn't have any big zippers available) out of a sweatshirt fleece I had hanging around. They love them! Sandy |

Even though you bought a pet bed, I will add my 2cents. I took a rust stained sheet and made a piillowcase from it and filled loosley with cedar shavings, and sewed it shut. I then took black fleece and made another pillowcase a tiny bit larger (no measuring just guestimation. I embroidered the dogs name on it in bright thread and then embroidered a puppy on it. It is cute. The dogs love the softness and do not chew on it. The cedar keeps them smelling freash. Walmart has the cedar. Grandma C |

GrandmaC I'm sure your dog also appreciates having his or her name on the bed too. |

I have a pattern all cute out for my pooch, she's about three years old and is a small thing. Though she thinks she's big. -grins- The pattern number is MCcalls M5016. I wanted to spoil her simply because she's my little girl. So she's getting a pink bed with lavander. Colleen

I have several dog beds...and what I did this weekend was make covers for them.. I just bought some flannel and did some quick sewing and added some velco so that I have a giant pillow case... That way I can just was the cover...because I can get pet beds pretty cheap and this way I can keep them clean and only was the cover... |

I took an old blanket and made a giant pillow, stuffed it with cedar shavings and sewed it shut. Then I took some polar fleece that I got on clearance (a wolf print! ) and made a giant pillowcase to cover it. I can take the cover off and wash it. For our rat terrier, I really cheated making her bed. I made a couple of pillowcases (closed sides with opening on center back) from Scooby Doo Flannel and use them over a purchased bed pillow for her bed. She likes it more than the purchased doggie bed with sides that we got her. Lately she's taking over the cat's tent and the cat uses her Scooby pillow. |
