Is anyone making the Spring Wrap Skirt that was in the newsletter not long ago? I'm making it out of a very inexpensive cotton, 'cause I didn't know how it would go. I cut it out a few days ago, and today I did everything except the buttons and the buttonholes. I figured I was too tired to do anymore, and I don't have much experience with button holes. One cool thing, at least I think so, is that I was able to find a button that came from a former elderly neighbor's stash. She passed away about a year ago, so I'm happy to be using her recycled button! She had given me a lot of sewing odds & ends about 10 years ago, but I hadn't used some of it. I'm hoping to make one of these skirts for my daughter out of the same fabric (she is only 6, so she doesn't need much fabric). I should have plenty left from my original 2 yards. If they go well, I already have the fabric picked out for the next one, and it is a cotton/poly blend, and it passed the wrinkle test. Theresa

I am so mad at myself, I meant to print that pattern off so I could make it and deleted the post without printing. Patsy Patsy

Patsy, I sent the links to you in a PM. - I didn't know if it was ok to send the link on the public forum. I finished it a few minutes ago. I had a little trouble with the button hole, and have a little hole in the fabric as a result. I have a sensor buttonhole, and it worked great on the test strip. It stopped feeding on the first real try, went up the waistband 3 inches on the second try, and I had to restitch over the 3rd try. But the one on the other side worked perfectly. I put pins at the end of the buttonholes before I cut them, so I didn't have any more unfortunate accidents. It looks great with a T shirt, so I'm a happy camper! Theresa

thanks for trying to send me a pm but my pm doesn't work for me for some strange reason. Anyway, thanks for trying. After I posted this, I realized that somewhere in my Groups List is the Sewing Tip a Day group so I went there and did a search and found the pattern and printed it off. Patsy Patsy

Hi, This sounds interesting and would like to make one, however, I don't get the tip newsletters, where do you sign up for them? Since I gained weight have trouble getting a skirt to fit. Could someone pm me the link for the pattern. Thanks Jacke Ladies, I did some searching and found the link to sign up for the newsletters and also found the pattern. Now I am a happy camper and will try the skirt soon. |

Jacke, let us know when you make the skirt. This is the first article of clothing that I've made for myself that fit!

Thanks so much for this thread! I had planned to make this skirt and then forgot about it. I just did a search on the group site and printed it out, too. Now all I have to do is make it! Sandy |

I have lost 21 pounds now and all my clothes look awful on me.. I need a new garment to make me look better.. Can you post a link to it so I could find it.. (please do not tell me to go to Yahoo, because I cannot do anything on there.. Its like greek to me)

I have never made anything for myself to wear. I was thinking this might be a nice first project. Does anyone have a picture of the finished project? I always need visuals to see what my end goal is. Thanks!!

I've never tried to post photos, but I'll give it a try. If you have a defined waist (unlike me), your skirt will have more gathers. I didn't get the pics, but maybe the link will work: http://new.photos.yahoo.com/theresafl2000/ Theresa

temom, I think you need to make either your album or the photo(if you are not comfortable sharing the whole album) viewable to the public. Gina

Thank you everyone. Sews4Kate, I used 100% cotton, so it wrinkles very easily. I'm going to make another out of a cotton poly blend that doesn't wrinkle so much. Dorothy, it comes to right above my kneee, but I am vertically challenged! My 12 year old is almost taller than me. I bought this fabric for $2 a yard with this skirt in mind. I was a little worried that it wouldn't be straight, because there is a color variation that is in strips, so if I didn't make it straight, the color strips would be crooked. I need to go ahead and make my daughter's. She loves it when we dress the same, so I should take advantage of it. The only problem is that she likes foo foo and I like tshirts and jeans! Theresa

That is an awesome job! One question, the ones that you make out of just cotton, don't you worry about the crotch ripping out on you? I have a serger and serge everything, but I am terrified to make bottoms for me or the girls from cotton. I don't want any of walking around with our bloomers showing from ripped pants! LOL (okay, you can tell I have young children, as soon as I typed that a vision of sponge bob and his ripped pants song came to mind! ) LMBO TIA |

Diannab, you are too funny! The visual I have is too much right now. Since it is a skirt, there is no crotch. I would love to make a skort like this, but don't know how. I have made several pair of shorts for my daughter out of cotton, and none of them have ripped. Since then, I bought a serger, so I would probably serge them. On this skirt, all the hems are double, so you don't have to worry about fraying. This is a wrap skirt, so the only seam is the waistband (which was so incredibly easy - I thought it would be really hard but it was simple). And because you make this based on your real measurements, there is not stress on your buttons! Now if you use hypothetical measurements, that might be another story. Theresa

Sherri seeing that photo brought back a lot of memories. Many many years ago now the very first thing I ever made on a sewing machine was a wrap around skirt. It was on my mums Singer treadle machine - which also had an electric motor but I had to use the treadle. Is this her first project? And has she now got the bug? Pauline

I can tell Gracie is going to be quite the seamstress! Good for her for using her own skills rather than begging mom to run off to the store to buy a ready made skirt.

I thought about doing this skirt awhile back and since you ladies said it was easy I'll have to give it a try. I have just the right fabric in my stash too - just hope my skirt looks as good as temom's and gracie's. The problem is whenever I sit down and try to sew something it always seems that either my dh or dd need my attention, and it takes forever to get back to what I was doing. Can't moms put a "Do Not Disturb" sign on their sewing room door?? - Maureen.
