I have a skirt that I pulled out to wear for Easter and the waistband is just a little too tight. It is wearable, but I cant say comfortable!!!!

Just wondering if there was any way that an amateur like myself could expand it say like cutting it somewhere(????) and adding a piece of elastic? I dont have to worry about it looking all pretty and stuff, as the jacket totally covers the waistband. I have searched this internet to come up with something and all that I am finding are waistband extenders and you have to order them (and of course I dont want to go that route!) The only store around here is a Joann Fabrics and they are furtherest place from being friendly or informative, so I was hoping some expert on here could lead me in the right direction.

Thank you so much!!!!

A quick and easy way would be to cut the button off (assuming there is a button) sew a folded piece of elastic to the waistband. Then sew the button on the folded end of the elastic. This would work for maybe an inch or so expansion. You would probably have to leave the zipper down a half inch or so, to not put any stress on it. As long as it's all covered by the jacket, or an overblouse, no one would know you'd done it.

You can somtimes find enough fabric to piece from the backside of the waistband and sew it at the overlap of the button. Then you can just piece the backside of the waistband where it needs to be pieced from a similar color in your stash. When letting out the waistband, you should be able to find the fullness you need in the darts or gathers of the garment. You remove the waistband from the button side, adjust to the last dart you will be taking the fullness from and then sew the waistband back.

I hate alterations but this is one of the better ones.
