I tried to make a pair of trousers for my 3 month old son, but for some reason they turned out huge and would fit a 4 year old...

so I decided to sew some flowers onto them and give them to my brothers 3 year old step-daughter instead

Anyway, as my husband 'tidied up' when I was in hospital having the baby I can't find anything and ended up using a 'nearly-matching' cotton reel that didn't match but I'd already done the waist before I realised that - kept getting distracted by the baby so wasn't paying enough attention...

So I used a green felt tip pen to colour the stitches on the waistband and the darn things are finally finished!!!

Now I just need to wash them a few times to make sure that the ink won't come out in the wash!

I felt like singing that Homer Simpson song when I finally finished these! lol

I've sung that song a few times myself.

I sometimes think it feels better to muck something up a bit and then salvage it in some way. You tend to appreciate those things more than the projects that go like clockwork. Not that I have terribly many of those - usually the ones that I'm doing for at least the second time. I truly believe that (for me at least) every pattern needs at least one attempt - sometimes because of operator error and other times because of pattern peculiarities. Which is why my family has such a large range of nightwear - all the "muslins" I've made of various items.

What happened with your pants wasn't a construction error - just the wrong size pattern choice - which can take a long time to figure out for some of us. Notwithstanding that you've done a fantastic job of the pants and they look lovely. Everyone will be oohing and aahing over how clever you are.

aw... thanks guys - I need some cheering up now! The little girl who I decided to give the trousers to said:

'is the baby still in your tummy?'
'no sweetie he's out now'
'well why are you still fat then?'

*sobs...

Awwwww, what a cutie!!!
Just remind people that it took a long time for your tummy to get so big, and it will take a bit of time for it to get smaller.

Good advice!

He looks like he's worth it anyway. He's adorable.

Looks like you got a goodun.
That "how come you are still fat" thing happened to me after my first baby. It wasn't put exactly that way but what really hurt was it was an old boy friend.

Thanks, I'm afraid I'm biased though, I just can't seem to stop showing his picture to everyone all the time... :bg:

He's my first baby, I'm enjoying every second of him!

Big Woo Hoo! I was too embarassed to admit that I had a problem with my sewing machine -It just sounded so stupid... The problem was that it was running backwards and I didn't know why... It made sewing really hard.:bang:

anyway I just found a manual for it and it turns out there is a dial that switches it from 'forward' to 'reverse' and all I had to do was turn it!

It's going to make stitching so much easier now that I won't have to pull hard on the fabric to get it to feed through in the direction that I want!

Imagine how much easier it will be now! Trust me, you are not the only one to do things like that! It will give you a few laughs after you are over the trauma of it. I'm sure if you had more sleep you would have been able to trouble shoot it sooner. It's amazing that we can operate with such little sleep as when we have tiny babies.

lol, not that I'm wanting to make excuses or anything... but sometimes I'm amazed that I can leave the house with matching shoes on! He was awake till 4.30am this morning and woke up again at 7:30am.

Still, you only get this time once so I can't wish it away! :)

He's beautiful. You are so lucky to appreciate him as much as you do. I was young when I had my two very close together. I took it all for granted I think.

As for the sewing; we all do things like that. Sometimes it's fixable and sometimes it's not. I think we all underestimate how much we're all alike. Everybody else can't possibly be better than me at everything! Can they? :nervous:

It's all a learning experience. Just keep repeating that phrase. It helps me a lot.

Too funny!! It's always good to hear that others make goofy mistakes too. I just spent the past two days trying to figure out how to make my machine go into reverse! You think I'd realize the little 'u-turn' button would have something to do with it!

You think I'd realize the little 'u-turn' button would have something to do with it!

lol, what makes mine even worse is that the dial on the front of my machine says 'Forward' on one side and 'Reverse' on the other...

Even worse... I almost set fire to my kitchen today! My husband called me to say he would be late home from work so I said 'ok, I'll turn the oven off then' (his dinner was in the oven) and I went out to the shops... Only I forgot to turn the oven off before I went out!

I was in the queue when I realised, 30 minutes from home! I just hopped from foot-to-foot whimpering to myself 'hurry up! hurry up!' and then RAN home pushing the pram really quickly!

All I could think about was the rabbit (we lock her in the kitchen when we're out of the house to stop her from chewing the wires)

I just ran through the front door, leaving the baby in the pram on the doorstep and turned off the oven and threw the pizza straight into the sink of water. Then had to sit on the front step holding the baby till the smoke had cleared enough to take him back into the house...

What a lousy day!

Sounds like you may have a touch of what we here call "baby blues" . Mild post delivery depression. Get lots of light and rest when the baby rests. When you are dead tired dont sew on anything really important to you.

I make my worst mistakes when I am sleepy or/and rushed. I make lots of mistakes any way and some of them are doozies. Everyone makes mistakes but the good save you made was very creative and admirable.
Pat yourself on the back for making it home in time to prevent a fire, for thinking of green felt tip pen to cover up a thread match problem and for making an adorable pair of pants for your neice. Last but not least, You made an adorable baby.

Oh, I meant to reply to this but had to get offline.

So glad it turned out well! I think everyone does something like that once in a while. You seldom hear of anything coming of it luckily though.

Take care and in cases like that I just try to IMMEDIATELY do whatever and not do something else first.

I've got a terrible case of the but-first syndrome. You need/want to do a certain thing but-first you do this then that and sometimes things get forgotten.

It's human nature. Glad it was only pizza that suffered!

I think that the 'but first' syndrome must be very contagious, cause I think I got it too. NO wonder I never seem to get anything done!

But first is something that seems to happen more to women. Maybe because men can only keep one thing in their brain at one time. Or because women have so much more to do.

The real problem with the but-first is that the priority items never seem to be "but first I'll have a good long soak in the bubble bath" or "put my feet up, drink some coffee and chat to my best friend on the phone". No, no it's always ironing or doing the tax paperwork or going to the dentist. The good stuff generally gets pushed to the bottom of the list. Again... and again.

My husband calls them my "side bars". He repeatedly tells me that "if I would forget about the "side bars" and do one thing at a time ..blah, blah, blah . ." How the heck to men think so many things get done on a daily basis around the house?
