I will be attempting a quilt soon and have a few questions. I plan on making my mother a quilt with pictures of all of her kids and grandkids. I believe this is called a memory quilt. I have NEVER made a quilt and really don't know where to begin. I want the size to be about the size of a throw blanket. I am not sure on how many squares I will need, or how much fabric to buy. I know I'd like to put the pictures inside each of the squares. What will be a good way to do this? After I have my measurements and everything I need, start sewing squares along with my border, then add the photos, then add batting, and the back....is this correct??? I'm sure some of you are laughing at me on this one, but I would really like to do this for my mother. She is not doing very well, and I want to give her something special. PLEASE HELP lol. |

If you click on the link in my signature you can see my first quilt top. You could do something very similar only on a smaller scale, say with 4x6 or 5x7 pictures. I assume you are going to get that printer fabric for the pictures? You can find the directions I followed by doing a Google search for Crayola Quilt Sew Whats New.

Here is a current book that may be helpful in your endeavor: http://books.google.com/books?id=Vo9YqWOL-G0C&dq=memory+quilts&printsec=frontcover&source=web&ots=fTc8guAs0X&sig=wk9njUCzLJqkd8Lb1vh3hwkzBD8 Instructions for using the June Tailor printer sheets: (If you do this, wait for a coupon like JoAnn's for 50% off to help with the cost of the sheets) http://www.junetailor.com/Creativity%20Center/CreativityCenter_ProjectSheets_MemoryQuilts_Memory Quilt.htm A website with lots of Memory Quilt ideas: http://www.freequiltpatterns.info/QuiltCategories/FreeMemoryPhotoQuiltPatterns.htm http://www.seedsofknowledge.com/memoryquilts.html http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070224/TWIST01/702250317/1129/TWIST This one is really unusual! http://www.printedtreasures.com/PrntTrsr/PTPages.nsf/KLWebKey/Idea%20Gallery%7E%7EOther%20Pages%7E%7E%7E%7E%7E%7 E%7E%7EFeatured%20Project?OpenDocument As you'll see, the sky is the limit. I would focus on something simple since this is your first project. Anything goes......and maybe you could incorporate some of your family clothing (cut up for the blocks) to even make the photographs even more meaningful. Good luck. Patty

...Instructions for using the June Tailor printer sheets: (If you do this, wait for a coupon like JoAnn's for 50% off to help with the cost of the sheets)... Something tells me that Joann's has discontinued the usual 40-50% off coupons that they had on each flyer. piney |

Me too. Also when you sign up they ask what you like best; free shipping is an option that I chose so I get online free shipping offers all the time. I seem to get the 40% off coupons every couple of weeks or so. Lennie |

Hello, I have to say that the second quilt I ever made was a memory quilt for my grandma's 80th birthday. I have since regained possession of it since she has passed away. Here is a link to my web page (which hasn't been updated in a while) where there's a picture of it. http://www.eskimo.com/~dms/Donnas_Quilts.html Luckily products for printing/transferring to fabric have improved greatly since I did this (it was about 1995). I have since printed lots of stuff on fabric, and instead of buying the sheets (which are pricey) I treat my fabric with "BubbleJet 2000". Then cut pieces 8 1/2 x 11 and stick to full page labels (I find they stick better than freezer paper for heavy printing like photos). The following link had a bunch of books and magazines with ideas for memory quilts, some much easier than others. I may order one or two myself (I'm bad). http://www.softfabricphotos.com/store/store.cfm?step=results&scategoryid=1 Hope this helps some. -Tech |
