I joined the Dear Jane Quilt blocks at the quilt shop I go to. Everyone that knows me, knows I'm not a quilter as a rule but I have been practicing my techniques and I think I'm doing pretty good. Check these out!!!

Great work Susie!!!! What're the size of the blocks? I keep hearing others talking about the Dear Jane quilt. Guess I'll have to look into that quilt once I get all my swap quilts done. :whacky:

Make sure you come back and show us the finished quilt! We'll be looking for it! :bg:

Susie.... really nice blocks! Have you ever checked out the Civil War Diary Quilt by Rosemary Youngs?
http://www.amazon.com/Civil-Diary-Quilt-Rosemary-Youngs/dp/0873499956
The book is wonderful because there are excerpts from letters and journals with blocks and were written by families of both the grey and the blue. Really heartbreaking with conscription act, etc.

I ordered Young's next book The Civil War Love Letter Quil(won't be released until this summer)....which is suppose to follow along the same lines of letters written during the war....
http://www.amazon.com/Civil-War-Love-Letter-Quilt/dp/0896894878/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-4440122-2928625?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1175448611&sr=1-1

I'm only mentioning Youngs books to you because if you like history, you will love these as Brenda really doesn't deleve into that aspect of the lives of people during the time period.

Are you going to use reproduction prints in all your blocks? I noticed some of the Baum (Windham Textiles) prints in some of yours......

In '97 I started working on the Dear Jane quilt and got as far as 81 blocks in two months....
http://pelkovitch.photosite.com/Album1/DJane81.html
and never finished it. Long story..... but last year I said the heck with it and just set the blocks I had together done. I have some of outside triangles finished that I will never use. If you want them, PM me with your address and I will send them to you.

Brenda,

I still can't cut straight. I have to take pains in cutting straight. I have that stuff you put on the rulers so they don't slide and mine still slide. I guess I'm too nervous.

Judy,

I think they are suppose to be 4½ inch blocks but some of mine are not quite that but in the cd which my friend bought it says some of the authors blocks weren't 4½ins either so she put border stips to make them work I guess that's what I'm going to have to do with a few of them.

Patty,

Thanks so much for the offer but I don't think my blocks will ever be a quilt I am doing this for practice and for something to do when I think about eating. LOL It's also believe it or not a stress reliever. I enjoy making these little blocks it's a challenge and when I get them finished it makes me proud that I did something so small and complicated.

I'm going to look at the other sites you sent me and bookmark them so I can maybe start those when I get tired of these. I think all of these fabrics I'm using is suppose to be civil war reproductions, if they aren't then I thought they were. I like the look of fabric they look like the olden days.

Susie.....too funny! I quilt as a stress reliever from thinking about my kids :nc: Better than biting my tongue!

Well, for practice blocks, you're certainly doing a great job....are you sure you aren't a closet quilter????

Nice work, S. I've been working up my energy to start a similar challenge. Were some of those what is called "window applique"? I really like that technique. It's slow, but I enjoy doing it.

Patty I think I gave up sewing and am now a quilter. LOL Nah my Trinatte won't let me quit making her little dresses. I have so many projects started I have to finish them all up so I can start some new ones. We started a 6 hour quilt which is quilt as you go, with the American Sewing Guild meeting, then I have a quilt for my grandson that is a civil war fabric with red and blue boarders just a simple quilt but I have been working on running it through the machine to quilt it now and it's taking some time. Then I have two wilderness quilts I started and haven't finished. I also have the BOM blocks I haven't gotten around to for March and now I have Aprils in my case to do also. I have plenty on my plate in the line of quilting. So I guess I am a closet quilter. :re:

Andrea,

Is the window applique the ones that have black borders with fuzzy cuts in the center? There is a lady at our shop that made one with roses and it is beautiful. The black strips is the window panes and the roses is suppose to be the outside.

Dede,

I'm just getting started I'm not that good, it took me several trys to get those little stinkers to look like that. I have one that I have done three times and I still haven't done it right yet. You didn't see that one. LOL

Lyn,

I surprised myself on these little gems. LOL I didn't know I had it in me. I really like quilting it makes me have patience.

Beach,

This time I'm proud of myself. I really didn't think I'd ever be able to do something like this. I couldn't even cut straight when I first started out quilting. But I'm persistent. :bg:

Susie, Have you tried gluing a small piece of fine sand paper onto back side of your ruler ? One on each corner if they are square or oblong. Other spots if shaped different. You can buy them or make your own. Doesn't hurt your fabric. Just an idea.

I use Invisigrip. It is a piece of plastic that just sticks to your ruler (no glue) and helps prevent the ruler from moving.

Another thing to help prevent the ruler from moving, is to reposition your hand as you cut. Basically, you cut along the ruler until you reach the place where your hand is positioned. Then you wait, reposition your hand further up the ruler and then cut up to that position, continue doing the same. HTH

I have invisigrip on all my rulers but I guess I'm putting too much pressure on them and they move sometimes. I get nervous cutting long pieces. I think I need to get the C-clamps out of my husbands tools and clamp them succors down.

Beach I never tried sandpaper. How does that work?

S, I'm not even sure about whether "window applique" is the right term for it. I remember learning this some years back. Instead of applying an applique on top of the background, you apply it underneath, and you cut out a shape in the background fabric to reveal the fabric underneath. So, you're stitching along the inside of a hole you cut in the background fabric.

Susie, the sand paper works great for me. If you have some fine sand paper laying around just cut a small square or round. & glue a piece on each corner on the underside of your ruler. It grips the fabric but doesn't damage it. As you cut with your rotary cutter place your hand on the ruler with your 4 fingers curled towards your palm & keep your thumb out of the way. Walk your hand along on the ruler with light pressure on it as you cut the fabric. Just be sure to keep those fingers back away from the cutter. That's why I curl my fingers under towards my palm. I started out lining my ruler with a line on the cutting mat to make sure I was cutting a straight line.Others may use other hand placement or something other than sand paper on their rulers but this works best for me. They do sells small sand paper round dots in a package with glue backing on them for this purpose. I always have sandpaper so cut my own. Is this more info than you ever wanted or needed ?
