Hi everyone, probably a dumb question

So I have this skirt pattern and the material I have is sheer and it needs to be lined, but the directions don't call for that nor do they have instructions. so
it's just a real simple skirt with an elastic waistband.
no pockets or slits or anything.
How do I line this?

Thanks!

If the waistband is a separate piece, and the skirt is a fairly loose design, I would cut the lining using the the same pattern pieces(minus the waistband) as the skirt...perhaps making it a little shorter.

Sew the skirt and lining separately.

Put lining and skirt, wrong sides together, and baste around the top edges at or near the seam line.

Add the waistband section, treating the skirt/lining as one piece.

Hem lining and skirt sections separately.

If the waistband is made from a folded over casing, you can still do this, but you may need to baste around the top edge in several places to keep the fabrics together.

Another idea would be to make a separate lining, add elastic around the waist, and call it a slip. This way, you can make several skirts and always have a lining that works!

Hi Donna, thanks for responding so quickly!

It is, in fact the fold over kind.

So I think that you said that what I should do is....

Cut out the lining from the same pattern piece as the skirt, and (hemming it separately) just sew/baste the waist parts together, and then fold them over together and make the casing with them together?

Thanks,
Jen

Yes. I think I would baste in three places...1/4 inch from edge, on the foldline, and again at the bottom stitching line of the casing. Otherwise, I think it will be very difficult to prevent the two sections from shifting when you try to make the casing.

Maybe someone else has some better advice for you. I've done this successfully before, but a long time ago.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
Take care,
Donna

You will need to attach the lining at the zipper because otherwise you will have a "hole" in the back of your skirt. The lining should be about 2 inches shorter than your regular skirt. Then, when you finish, you run a loose chain of thread between the lining and the skirt about 2 inches above the lining' hem (top). This will keep the lining from riding up. Now, that being said, this is perfect with a fitted skirt.

If the skirt is gathered, I would cut the lining with a very compatable fabric to the garment and line each individual piece. Then you treat the whole thing as though it were one fabric.
