I am making this top with a sheer pink knit fabric. The pattern has the regular 2 1/2" facings on it, which I think are going to look terrible as you will see them underneath. I'm going to do a rolled hem for hem and sleeves, but what do I do for the top? Would a binding made from the fabric work?

I think that a self-binding inside the neckline would be very nice.

Ooooh, that is so pretty. Pam has the right solution. Less is more in this situation.

On a television show there was a woman that did facings using skin tone interfacing which she wrapped all the way around from the front edge of the facing. Not only did the color keep it from showing through, it made a nice finish on the edge of the facing.
It was a great idea for exactly your problem.
I think she was on a Susan Khalji show. She was African-American and it worked well for her skin tone. With a sheer fabric she bound all her seams that way too. I've heard of using a color to match your skin for pockets in white pants and this carried that idea one step further.

She had samples in a wide variety of skin tones but where you would find it could be another problem.

Dorothy, I must say you are looking dapper today.

Yes, very handsome! I like the 'stach.

I also feel like I learned something new. Very good solutions for pants and facings.

Not wanting to give you the wrong idea (I'm happily married and all) but I actually preferred yesterdays. Wrong gender for me personally but just so lush and gorgeous. I would have put her up on my wall.

This fellow is as Pam said quite dapper, but a bit broody for me and I'm not a huge fan of facial hair. I do appreciate the thought though.

I am still watching with interest the changing parade of avatars. I wish that past posts kept their original avatars - I'd settle for a gallery of Dorothy avatars - but keeping them in their original place would be almost like watching the growth and development of an artist (in their particular phases). I'm probably overanalysing the significance of the choices though.

Although this is off topic, I find it hard to find an avatar that I like that will work on the site. And I don't know how to make them, so I keep looking occasionally to see if I can find a new one. Oh, and thanks for the help for the top, I'm going to work on it tomorrow. I went fabric shopping again today (couldn't resist, I was in a totally new store that had such nice stuff!) and besides it was the place that sold me my new machine, so I felt obligated (yeah, right) She has such a nice selection of dressier fabrics, beautiful quality, makes the local Fabricland look pretty mediocre. Got the cutest Lorilee fabric for my sister too. All in all, it was a great day and I didn't sew a stitch!

Cut self-fabric on the bias and use for trimming instead of facings. Cutting the fabric on the bias will allow for give around the curves. You might also try dressing it up even further with a decorative beaded lace. I used a beaded and braided lace on my second wedding gown and just turned in the seam allowance on the neckline as I added the trim. It came out beautiful.

Sorry to sound so dumb, but what is an "avatar?" Ya'll went straight over my head with that one!

PS I'm sewing again!!!!!!

It's the little picture that people put next to their name at the top of the post. Dorothy has been changing hers quite often and I at least have found it quite entertaining.

Thanks for clarifying that for me.

Happy sewing and happy Easter to everyone!
