I am collecting a few novelty prints to make my kids a quilt - a full-size one. My son loves skeletons, robots, butterflies, and mermaids. My daughter loves skeletons, dinosaurs, and space stuff. I am trying to figure out which ones to put together! So far I have some good skeletons. Non-tacky mermaid fabrics are pretty hard to come by!

So anyway. As I am collecting fabrics I want a quilt top pattern that is strippy and / or fast. The novelty prints require about a 5" by 5" finished size. I am out of ideas! I don't mind computing my own yardage but I need some inspiration.

Any help, tips, or moral support would be appreciated.

Blackie, I am doing a 6 hour quilt. It's a quilt as you go and it's just right to make for kids. I'll send you cover pic of the book, I think I paid 7.00 for the book on how to make it. I'll pm you so I can get your email address.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

If you go to this site, on the left side, click on quilt patterns and then go way down to the bottom and click on Wickedly Easy Quilts it has free instructions for a fast easy quilt.... don't know if it meets your 5 x 5 need or not but its one idea for ya! Sounds like it will be a neat quilt for the kids!

I have been collecting 6 inch squares for an I Spy quilt. I am just going to put a narrow sashing between the squares and then add a border and binding. Keeping it simple:bg:

Blackie, I have been shopping recently for a quilt project and found the same dilemma re: kid-interest themes that aren't over the top. My daughter is looking for fairies, and while we've seen some out there, we haven't seen any that we'd like to see right on top of her bed for many years to come. A woman at a quilt shop offered me this nice idea. She said to use a very pale fabric, something light and washed out for those squares, and to use fabric-permanent ink with a rubber stamp. I googled fairy stamps and immediately found a load of stamps that would do the trick. I think this idea will help me honor her interests without making her a quilt that she'll hate when she's 7 or 8 and all grown up. ;)

Andrea, my cousin found what I think is a really nice fabric with fairies on it for a quilt that she is making. I'll try to find it and post a link.

Andrea, I found the fabric that my cousin bought:
Fairy Garden on Cream (http://www.fabricparadise.com/cgi-bin/fabricshop/gallery.cgi?func=show&file=95&Category=2&Page=2&v=1)

While searching for that, I found this fairy panel that is being sold on ebay. Just had to post the link as I think it is really nice.

Andrea - if you can get your hands on Alexander Henry's pixie fabric (http://www.glassthimble.com/alexanderhenryfabrics.htm) - I'm sorry I don't have a better representation. There are cream, pink, and green backgrounds at least, maybe more. It's a beautiful, whimsical, but not obnoxious fairy print.

I haven't succeeded in finding a mermaid fabric that isn't A. Disney's Ariel, or B. Very brightly / garishly colored with cartoony mermaids.

OTOH, there have been loads of lovely skeleton / skull prints so that's been good.

You can try here: http://www.quiltshops.com/search.htm
Just type in mermaid and many places will come up.

blackie,
I've made several "I spy" quilts for quick kid's/baby gifts by just alternating 5" novelty print squares with 5" squares of a solid or like-solid fabric. Like a checkerboard.

How about printing your own fabric squares using clip art? Or draw some mermaids on fabric (or have your kids draw them) using fabric crayons.

I have been looking for an Australian site I found several years ago for baby and children's quilts to send to you. All were a page long, quick and easy. I downloaded a few and did make one but don't seem to have the address on paper or in my favourites. Maybe a New Zealand er or Australian knows of it. The patterns were black and white. If you find it let me know!! I wish I could find it again.
