As basic as it sounds, I am completely confused by how the heck to backstitch on my sewing machine! I am using a zigzag stitch. I followed the directions in the manual, but it doesn't actually go backwards (is it supposed to??) when I hold down the curvy arrow button indicated. It does make the needle go up and down about 4 or 5 times, but I can't tell if it is actually tying off my thread. Am I hyperventilating (and hand-tying everything) for no reason? How can I tell if my thread is safely secured? Thanks! Katie Burke |

Katie, did you get the issue resolved? I don't have that machine, so I don't know if I would be able to help you. It looks like, from the picture, that it would be the button that looks like a U turn sign. Try stitching a straight stitch, and then use reverse. Or you can start stitching in reverse. Sometimes I think I've pressed the button, but I didn't press hard enough, and I shoot forward instead. Once you know you can stitch in reverse on a straight stitch, try the ziz zag, but try stitching in reverse first, to see if it goes backward. Because it is a zigzag, it may do the side to side stitches before it goes backward. Theresa

Ooh oh oh. I think I know the answer to that one!! Does your machine have more than 1 zigzag stitch. My brother NV4000D has two, one has a dot at the top of the' picture' one has a dash. The dot means that it just ties off the stitch, the dash means it will go in reverse. And sometimes the stitch design doesn't allow for it to go in reverse at all, it just ties off. But I would think a zigzag would go in reverse. Let me know if this works ok? It took me about 3 days to figure that out and I had to finally read the manual to get it.

So THAT is what those dots are for!!! LOL! Thanks for the replies! I was using the "dot" stitch and that would explain what it was doing - no reverse! Thanks again! Katie |

Katie, we all have our 'moments' that's for sure. I'd guess that because the fabric is so thick that maybe the feed dogs can't grab it, but I also think (I recall reading this I believe) that if you have the walking foot on you can't go in reverse. My previous machine was a Pfaff which had the built in differential feed, and on occasion I really really miss having it, but I do love the Brother, though I haven't tried out a 1/4 of the stuff it does.....not enough hours in the day.
