If I make a goered skirt and want it to flare from the bottom 8 inches do I need to make 4 goers or more. this is a skirt for a young teen. It is to go with a blouse that is very dressy and stylish but the sleeves are large and loose like the pretty flowy handekerchief style skirts.
I dont have enough fabric to construct the same type skirt but I hoped the flared skirt bottom would produce a similar ambience. Any comments or advice.

There is a type of gored skirt that flares at the bottom like a tulip. Is that what you are thinking? If it is, you just clip up from the bottom corners of each gore so that you have a triangle leading to the seamline and spread the skirt to change the skirt line.

Thank you Pam. Your correct. I'll let you know how it turns out. I may decide to go with the handerchief type hemline but I havn't started yet. Oh Oh! Easter is tomorrow. I'll do whichever is faster.

You know? I didn't think I had enough fabric to make the skirt with the handkerchief type hemline and I wish I hadn't because when I put the blouse with the skirt it looked the pits. I should have sketched it out or something to see how it would look. The skirt isn't finished but Amanda tried it on with the blouse and she looked sort of miss-matched. The blouse is too taylored in the bodice to go with skirt even though the sleves are loose and floppy. The skirt with the tulip type hem would probably have been better.:re: :re:

I'll again put on my big girl panties and get over it.

Ya know? Every so often I put together something thinking it will be perfect and it falls flat. I know just what you mean, although when it is all finished it sometimes looks a whole lot better.

Grandma, were you looking for a tulip skirt or one that simply flared out? Keeping the grains in mind and where you want the flare to fall you could simply flare out the bottom of each gore, curved or straight. If you were to go this route, I would use some paper to picture it or practice on small pieces of fabric to check the drape. You would also have to consider the curve to the hem. I have done this before, but at present I can't seem to articulate it very well. A slightly flared gored skirt can be quite dressy, depending upon the fabric.

Thanks Pam, I think part of my frustration is that it is not how I visualized it and maybe it will look right when it is finished. I have gotten frustrated with the length of time I have spent on this project, money spent, and the fact that my granddaughter is not absolutely elegant in it, but instead looks like 1960's flower child. Also she insists on wearing the skirt just above her Hmmm Hmmm. She looks a little like a 1960's flower child.

Nancy, You are explaining yourself well and that is what I have seen on several skirts lately and probably should have done with amanda's skirt. If I have enough fabric left from the pants perhaps I will try what you suggest. It isn't the same as the blouse fabric but is a complementary fabric and you have given me hope for success yet.

Thank You both!!!!!

Thank You Marion, I couldn't have finished without everyones help and encouragment. Years ago I would have just stuck it in a drawer and left it till I could call it clutter and throw it out.

:re: They give me a reason to sew and they are so appreciative. I still wish I had done the flared gored skirt but next time. I think the Handkerchief style hem suits Amanda's desire to be a little different but pretty and not too different
Thank you
